Nearly 37% of Indians expect decline in quality of life: survey
The survey highlights the persistent issue of food inflation, which has strained household budgets and reduced spending power. As a result, India's economy, now the fifth-largest in the world, is expected to experience its slowest growth in four years. Nearly two-thirds of respondents indicated that inflation has remained unchecked since Modi took office in 2014, with over half of participants saying that inflation has negatively affected their quality of life.
In response, Modi is expected to introduce measures in this week's national budget to address sluggish economic growth, increase disposable incomes, and ease the financial strain on the middle class. Nearly half of survey respondents reported that their personal income has remained unchanged over the past year while their expenses have risen. Moreover, two-thirds of respondents said rising expenses have become increasingly difficult to manage.
Despite India's strong economic growth, the country's job market has not kept pace with its large, youthful population, leaving many struggling to find steady employment. Last year, the government allocated nearly $24 billion to job creation schemes over five years, but these programs have yet to be implemented as discussions on their details continue to delay progress.

Armed men kidnap, kill nine Pakistani bus passengers
QUETTA: Rescue personnel transfer the body of a bus passenger into an ambulance, a day after he was killed in a militant attack allegedly by the separatist group Balochistan Liberation Front (BLA), at the Zhob district in Balochistan province on July 11, 2025. -- AFP QUETTA, Pakistan: Pakistan's authorities retrieved the bullet-ridden bodies of nine bus passengers kidnapped by insurgents in a spate of attacks on buses in the mountainous southwestern province of Balochistan, officials said on Friday. The separatist Baloch Liberation Front (BLF) claimed the killings of the nine laborers, saying that they were involved in spying for Pakistani intelligence agencies. Baloch separatists, who have been demanding a greater share of resources, have played a role in similar past killings of those identified as hailing from the eastern province of Punjab. Government official Naveed Alam said the bodies with bullet wounds were found in the mountains overnight, while a provincial government spokesman, Shahid Rind, said the passengers were seized from two buses on Thursday evening. 'We are identifying the bodies and reaching out to their families,' he said, adding that the victims, working as laborers in the restive region, were returning home to Punjab. They include two brothers who were going to attend the funeral of their father, Alam said. Ethnic insurgents accuse Pakistan's government of stealing regional resources to fund expenditure elsewhere, mainly in the sprawling province of Punjab. Security forces foiled three insurgent attacks on Thursday before the kidnappings, Rind said, accusing India of backing the militants. The Indian foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. New Delhi denies accusations by Islamabad that it is funding, training and backing the militants in a bid to stoke instability in the region, where Pakistan relies on China among international investors to develop mines and mineral processing. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) is the strongest among the insurgent groups long operating in the area bordering Afghanistan and Iran, a mineral-rich region. In recent months, separatists have stepped up their attacks, mostly targeting Pakistan's military, which has launched an intelligence-based offensive against them. Their other main targets have been Chinese nationals and interests, in particular the strategic port of Gwadar on the Arabian Sea, with the separatists accusing Beijing of helping Islamabad to exploit resources. The BLA blew up a railway track and took over 400 train passengers hostage in an attack in March that killed 31. – Reuters

After uproar, Prada plans ‘Made In India' footwear collection
MUMBAI, July 12: Prada announced on Friday that it is seeking a partnership with makers of traditional Indian "artisanal footwear," following backlash over its recent launch of sandals resembling 12th-century Indian designs. The Italian luxury brand sparked controversy two weeks ago after unveiling open-toe ethnic sandals during a Milan fashion show, which bore a strong resemblance to Kolhapuri chappals — traditional footwear named after the historic city of Kolhapur in Maharashtra state. After photos from the show went viral, Indian artisans criticized the brand for not acknowledging the origins of the design. Facing growing pressure, Prada admitted late last month that the sandals were inspired by ancient Indian styles. The uproar fueled a surge in demand for authentic Indian sandals, with artisans and sellers viewing the controversy as an opportunity to showcase the traditional craft and tap into a wave of national pride. Prada said it held a virtual meeting on Friday with the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, which represents around 3,000 Kolhapuri sandal artisans, to explore potential collaboration opportunities. 'The next step will be for Prada's supply chain team to meet with a range of artisanal footwear manufacturers,' the company stated. The Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce confirmed that Lorenzo Bertelli—head of corporate social responsibility at Prada and son of the company's owners—participated in the meeting. During the discussions, Prada reportedly expressed interest in launching a limited-edition, "Made in India" collection of Kolhapuri-inspired sandals in collaboration with Indian artisans. While India's luxury market remains relatively small, it is expanding, with wealthy consumers increasingly spending on high-end fashion, luxury cars, and expensive watches. Prada currently does not operate any retail stores in India, and its products are generally accessible only to affluent Indian shoppers purchasing goods abroad. The sandal controversy generated days of debate on social media, with critics, artisans, and Indian politicians calling on Prada to give proper credit to India's rich heritage.
