Booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, some lost their chance to fly out even after getting visas and flight tickets. Others had to pause midway, attending counselling and awaiting court clearance instead of joining universities.
Many were caught during farewell or celebration parties where they consumed cannabis or other drugs. Some were first-timers, others occasional or regular users.
'I never touched drugs in college. Before flying out for my master's, I went to Goa with friends and tried hash for the first time. I was caught,' said a 23-year-old who had to suspend his plans due to an ongoing police case.
Another 25-year-old, headed to Australia, said, 'At a party, my friends used my phone to pay the peddler. The police tracked the payment to me.'
Drugs disrupted careers
These are not isolated cases. De-addiction experts say hundreds of high-achieving students have had their careers disrupted due to drug-related offences.
Peer pressure, ignorance of legal implications, and troubled childhoods are some common factors.
'Once caught, the biggest dilemma is whether to disclose the case on visa forms, immigration documents, or job applications,' said K Devika Rani, a de-addiction expert who works with the police. She added that many students lose parental support after such incidents, compounding their distress.
Legal clearance can take up to a year, with mandatory training and court procedures. Students often miss at least two academic sessions and are sometimes called as witnesses in court to seek immunity under Section 64A by cooperating in the peddler's trial.

Second J&K arrest through facial recognition tech; terror suspect held at Anantnag checkpoint
Representative image SRINAGAR: J&K police announced Sunday their second arrest through Facial Recognition System (FRS) since the AI-based technology was installed two months ago in some areas, picking up the terror suspect as he passed a checkpoint in Anantnag. The previous such breakthrough came last month. Muneeb Mushtaq Sheikh of Pulwama's Pampore was booked in cases under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Explosive Substances Act. He was spotted at Ganishbal in Anantnag, part of south Kashmir where FRS is being used along with some pockets in central Kashmir. Upon detection, Muneeb was immediately taken into custody and shifted to Pahalgam police station for further verification, the police said in a statement. J&K police underlined the significance of FRS, vowing to continue leveraging modern tools to combat terror and ensure public safety. 'The swift identification and apprehension of the suspect highlights the effectiveness of advanced surveillance technologies, including FRS, in enhancing security and maintaining law and order,' the police said. On June 19, an alleged 'overground worker (OGW)' was held in Anantnag district, the first using FRS. The system flagged the suspect as he passed a checkpoint in the district's Langanbal area. OGWs are those who provide shelter and logistical support to terrorists. J&K authorities have rolled out FRS as part of a wider security overhaul. The system is equipped with real-time alert capabilities for security forces once a suspect appears within the surveillance camera's range.

Tauseef betrayed dreams of his family to rise in crime world
Patna: Tauseef, alias Badshah, the prime suspect in the murder of gangster Chandan Mishra at the city's private hospital, has become the centre of media attention. The case reveals an unexpected trajectory from a privileged education to organised crime. Tauseef, who received his education from a prestigious private school in Patna, comes from a respectable middle-class family. His mother works as a schoolteacher, and his father runs a hardware store near Patna Junction. Despite his parents' aspirations for him to become a successful professional, Tauseef was drawn to the allure of quick wealth and power. Driven by the desire to become a millionaire quickly, Tauseef transitioned from a builder to a contract killer. He also came into contact with a political party, met with a leader, and put up his banners and posters around the city. Tauseef hails from the Gulistan locality of Phulwarisharif. He formed a gang with four friends to step into the world of crime. The gang includes Zaid from Phulwarisharif, and Barka Nishu and Chhotka Nishu from Samanpura. All four were also in contact with various political parties. Nishu was shot at the gate of the hospital in Sept last year. Tauseef visited the hospital for his treatment. Patna SSP, Kartikeya Sharma, said, "Several cases are registered against Tauseef at Phulwarisharif and other police stations, including NDPS (narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances), Arms Act, firing, and attempt to murder. He was also in jail earlier under the Arms Act. But no murder case was registered against him." Several social media accounts have been created under Tauseef's name. However, whether these are his own or made by someone else is under investigation. His bio on social media reads: "If you want to ask, ask about my intentions; as the name is known by entire Patna." While the police were searching for him, he was mocking them on social media. The social media account also follows Salman Khan. However, Patna Police arrested him in Kolkata. On July 29, 2023, Tauseef created a channel on social media. This channel has 739 subscribers and 126 uploaded videos. Through this channel, Tauseef began uploading his reels and started glamorising criminal activities. Most of his videos were shot in expensive cars, luxury hotels, and restaurants, indicating his preference for a luxurious lifestyle. The murder occurred in a gangwar police have already clarified. Police said Tauseef led the five miscreants who entered the hospital and murdered gangster Chandan Mishra. CCTV footage shows that he seemed fearless. Upon reaching the second floor of the hospital, he was at the forefront, with the other miscreants following him. Before entering the ward, Tauseef calmly drew a pistol from his waist. He advanced toward Mishra's room while looking at the camera. After shooting, all his associates ran out, but he exited calmly, as if nothing happened. It was reported that after Mishra's murder, Tauseef made a video and left the room after confirming the death.
