Draw 'disappointing' but still a point

BBC News15-04-2025
Coventry City midfielder Matt Grimes says Monday night's 1-1 draw with Hull City was "disappointing" but keeps them on track to reach the Championship play-offs.The 29-year-old put the Sky Blues ahead just after half-time with a deflected effort for his first goal for the club since joining from Swansea City in January. But Abu Kamara squeezed in a late equaliser for the Tigers to deny Coventry from moving five points clear of seventh-placed West Bromwich Albion."Obviously it's a tough place to come with them fighting for what they're fighting for at this stage of the season," Grimes told BBC CWR."But [I'm] disappointed in the end to draw the game. I thought we had enough chances at 1-0 to get the second and then disappointed to concede a soft goal like that."But it's a point in the right direction, so we move on."Grimes says he is "hopeful" Coventry can finish in a top-six spot but is wary that "everyone at this stage of the season is playing for something"."I think we play two teams fighting for the top six and two trying to avoid relegation, so every game is so tough," he said.Frank Lampard's side welcome the Baggies on Good Friday for a vital game in the play-off race with Albion three points behind before travelling to Plymouth and Luton."Every game is a big game," Grimes added. "I don't think it's going to hinge on one game. We just need to keep being consistent and keep doing what we're doing."

Man City re-sign goalkeeper Trafford from Burnley on five-year deal

July 29 (Reuters) - Goalkeeper James Trafford has returned to Manchester City on a five-year contract after helping Burnley earn a promotion back to the Premier League with the fewest goals conceded in the Championship last season, City said on Tuesday. Englishman Trafford, who won the golden glove with 29 clean sheets in the Championship last season, has re-joined the club where he spent eight years as a youth player for 27 million pounds ($36 million), English media reports said. 'Rejoining City is such special and proud moment both for me and my family. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to come back to Manchester City," Trafford said in a statement shared by City. 'This is the place I call home – it's a truly special football club with fantastic people who make it such a unique place to work and play." Trafford played on loan at third-tier sides Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers before making a permanent move to Burnley in 2023, where he played his first full season in the Premier League, making 28 appearances as the club was relegated. But the six-foot-six keeper returned to form in the Championship last season, with Burnley conceding only 16 goals in the campaign, 14 fewer than champions Leeds United. "I am still very young and hungry to keep learning and improving – and I know there is no better environment than Manchester City to help make me become the best goalkeeper I can be," Trafford added. City, who begin their quest for a seventh Premier League title in nine seasons when they visit Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 16, said Trafford would wear the number one jersey. Man City complete signing of James Trafford in British record deal as Pep Guardiola's career spending passes €2bn - the most for a manager in history

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper James Trafford in a British record deal from Burnley. The 22-year-old had been courted by Newcastle United for well over a year but has opted for a return to the Etihad Stadium, where he came through the club's academy. City sold Trafford to Burnley for an initial £14m two years ago and inserted matching rights into the deal. Once Newcastle bid for the England Under-21 international last week, City had to quickly decide whether to make their move – despite neither Ederson nor Stefan Ortega leaving so far this summer. They have done just that, adding the youngster, who is currently part of the England first team set up, to their ranks again. The deal is worth £31millon, but could rise again if add-ons are met. A sell-on clause is also included. Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, has now seen his career spending as a manager pass €2billion - the first boss to do so in the history of the game. Trafford conceded only 16 goals as Burnley secured promotion back to the Premier League last term, keeping an astonishing 30 Championship clean sheets. That equalled a 71-year EFL record, set by Port Vale, and Thomas Tuchel subsequently called him up to England's senior squad.
