Centene posts surprise loss as medical costs surge, shares slump

Reuters6 days ago
July 25 (Reuters) - Centene (CNC.N), opens new tab on Friday posted a surprise quarterly loss, in yet another disappointment for investors in the sector that has suffered a series of setbacks due to rising costs in government-backed insurance plans.
Shares of the company tumbled 14.5% in premarket trading, dragging down peers Elevance (ELV.N), opens new tab and Molina Healthcare (MOH.N), opens new tab, which have also warned of elevated costs in government-backed insurance plans.
The insurance sector has been under strain for the past two years due to rising medical costs.
On one hand, insurers are grappling with increased utilization of behavioral health services, home care, and high-cost drugs, while on the other, the expiration of pandemic-era subsidies and Medicaid protections has shifted enrollment toward sicker members, squeezing their margins.
Centene, which largely focuses on government-sponsored plans, posted a medical cost ratio (MCR) of 93% for the quarter, well above Wall Street's expectation of 89.3% and a clear sign of pressure across all business lines.
"The medical cost ratio for the quarter was surprisingly high and appeared related to all major lines of business, although its individual exchange business was likely the biggest culprit," said Morningstar analyst Julie Utterback.
The quarterly loss was largely attributed to a downward revision in expected 2025 risk adjustment revenue, part of the Affordable Care Act's mechanism to balance costs across insurers.
The adjustment, combined with rising Medicaid expenditure drove Centene to a second-quarter adjusted loss of $0.16 per share, versus an expected profit of $0.86, according to data compiled by LSEG.
"We are disappointed by our second-quarter results, but we have a clear understanding of trends that have impacted performance, and are working with urgency and focus to restore our earnings trajectory," CEO Sarah London said.
Centene said it would provide 2025 earnings expectations on the conference call.
The company is in the process of requesting premium increases for Obamacare plans for 2026 to reflect a higher proportion of sicker patients who need more medical care, than it previously expected.
Centene expects to be able to take corrective pricing actions for 2026 in states that represent a substantial majority of its membership in those plans.

Safe-haven gold gains on tariff uncertainty ahead of August 1 deadline

July 31 (Reuters) - Gold prices rose 1% on Thursday as traders turned to the safe haven asset amid ongoing tariff uncertainty, as U.S. President Donald Trump's August 1 deadline to end negotiations approaches. Spot gold was up 1% at $3,308.07 per ounce, as of 0855 a.m. ET (12:55 GMT). U.S. gold futures gained 0.3% to $3,306.10. "We've seen an uptick in trade uncertainty as we approach this August 1st deadline for tariffs... just a little bit of a revival of the safe haven bid," said Peter Grant, vice president and senior metals strategist at Zaner Metals. "The midpoint of the broader range is sort of around $3,312/oz and we tested that level today. I'd probably be a little bit more optimistic if we're able to set new highs for the week." Trump on Wednesday issued a blitz of tariff announcements on imports of copper and goods from Brazil and South Korea, ahead of an August 1 deadline for higher U.S. tariff rates. U.S. inflation increased in June as tariffs on imports started raising the cost of some goods. The PCE index rose 0.3% last month after an upwardly revised 0.2% gain in May. Meanwhile, the U.S. central bank held interest rates steady on Wednesday, and Fed Chair Jerome Powell's comments after the decision undercut confidence that borrowing costs would begin to fall in September. Gold thrives in a low-interest rate environment as it is a non-yielding asset. Investors now await the U.S. non-farm payrolls data on Friday for more clues on the Fed's rate path. Spot silver fell 1.3% at $36.66 per ounce, its lowest since July 7, platinum slipped 0.5% to $1,306.98, while palladium gained about 0.9% to $1,215.79. "It would not be surprising if strong selling pressure in silver futures is partly due to sympathy selling amid the big copper market meltdown seen the past two days," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Metals said. Trump surprised the market on Wednesday by saying the U.S. would impose a 50% tariff on copper pipes and wiring, dragging down U.S. copper prices more than 20% on the COMEX exchange .

US appeals court overturns first NFT insider trading conviction

NEW YORK, July 31 (Reuters) - A federal appeals court on Thursday overturned the fraud conviction of a former product manager at OpenSea, the world's largest marketplace for non-fungible tokens, in what prosecutors called the first insider trading case involving digital assets. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan agreed with Nathaniel Chastain that erroneous jury instructions could have led to his being convicted merely for acting unethically, and without undermining a property interest belonging to OpenSea. A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, are unique digital assets, reflecting ownership of files such as artwork, other images, videos and text, and recorded on a blockchain. Chastain had been appealing his May 2023 wire fraud and money laundering conviction and three-month prison sentence. Prosecutors said he stole OpenSea's confidential information about which NFTs would be featured on its home page, secretly bought those NFTs, and sold them for a profit after they were featured and the price went up. Chastain made about $57,000 from buying and selling 15 NFTs, court papers show. Charges were unveiled in June 2022, after the NFT market had grown to about $40 billion annually. Circuit Judge Steven Menashi said the trial judge erred by instructing jurors that a conviction did not require proof Chastain stole information that had commercial value to OpenSea, and a fraud scheme may involve conduct that was merely dishonest. "If the wire fraud statute criminalized conduct that merely departed from traditional notions of fundamental honesty and fair play, almost any deceptive act could be criminal," Menashi added. Alexandra Shapiro and David Miller, two of Chastain's lawyers, in separate statements said they were pleased. "This case was a miscarriage of justice," they said.
