A-ha frontman Morten Harket diagnosed with Parkinson's disease
The news was announced on Wednesday on the Norwegian band's official website, written by their biographer Jan Omdahl.
In the statement, it was revealed Harket, 65, had already undergone several rounds of brain surgery and had "no problem accepting the diagnosis".
"With time, I've taken to heart my 94-year-old father's attitude to the way the organism gradually surrenders," he said.
"I use whatever works."
His diagnosis had until now, remained strictly private, but for a few people in his immediate circle.
When asked why he held off making an announcement, Harket replied it was so he could focus on the "delicate balancing act" of managing his symptoms with medication and advanced neurological treatment.
While Harket has been able to manage the condition for now, it has been affecting his voice, raising uncertainty for his creative future.
When biographer Omdahl asked if Harket thinks if he could sing right now, his response was: "I don't really know.
"I don't feel like singing, and for me that's a sign.
"I don't expect to be able to achieve full technical control.
"The question is whether I can express myself with my voice. As things stand now, that's out of the question."
While Parkinson's can be treated with surgery and medication, there is no current cure.
In June 2024, the singer successfully underwent a neurological procedure called deep brain stimulation (DBS) in which electrodes were implanted in the left side of his brain, connected to a pace-maker like device.
Six months later, he had the same procedure on the right side.
"I'm trying the best I can to prevent my entire system from going into decline," Harket said.
When asked what he'd say to A-ha fans now, he replied: "Don't worry about me.
"Spend your energy and effort addressing real problems, and know that I am being taken care of."
Formed in 1982 by Harket and his friends Paul Waaktaar-Savoy and Magne Furuholmen, the band are best known for their hits Take On Me and The Sun Always Shines on TV, which featured in their debut album Hunting High and Low.
In a post on Instagram, Furuholmen said his thoughts were with his band mate and his family at a "difficult time".
"The news brings sadness, but it is worth to remember through the hurt there is also a lot of gratitude," he wrote.
"For all the amazing memories...for how lucky we are that people continue to find meaning, hope and joy in our shared musical legacy."
Other stars including Michael J. Fox, Ozzy Osbourne, Alan Alda and Billy Connolly have all spoken about their experience with the progressive disease.
According to Health Direct, Parkinson's disease occurs when the "nerve cells in the brain don't make enough of a body chemical called dopamine, which affects movement and mood".
Dopamine plays a vital role in regulating the smooth control of muscles and movement, and so typical symptoms can include tremors, stiff and inflexible muscles and slow movement.

Hervey Bay dementia choir helping elderly manage their condition and socialise with others
Inside an unassuming church hall in Hervey Bay, a group of amateur singers is belting out classics from the likes of John Denver and Gerry and the Pacemakers. Some voices are in tune. Some are breaking with laughter. Others are singing the wrong song. But being pitch perfect isn't the goal. For the Forget Me Not singing group, music is their medicine — the choir is made up of people diagnosed with dementia and their carers. "I like the songs they sing, they've got music out of my vintage," says Dick Legge, who was diagnosed three years ago. The group meets twice a week between Hervey Bay and the nearby heritage city of Maryborough for what founder Julie de Waard describes as a "dementia-friendly" two hours of singing and shaking maracas and tambourines. "Singing allows you to release endorphins and make you feel good," says Ms de Waard, who is the seniors liaison officer with Fraser Coast Regional Council. "At the same time, they're opening up their lungs … we're doing things like looking for the page numbers and looking for the songs in the book." Every breath between lyric or shake of an instrument is an exercise in combating the debilitating condition. "It's targeting hand-eye coordination and all of those physical attributes as well as memory," Ms de Waard says. For John Dineen, who has been managing his frontotemporal dementia diagnosis for 40 years, the singing group is helping his mind and soul. "I come here because I lost my wife, I'm on my own," he says. "I don't sing very well because my breathing is no good, but it doesn't matter. I enjoy it … and the singing helps me socialise." Hervey Bay, a fast-growing city three hours north of Brisbane, is a popular destination among retirees. Almost a third of residents on the Fraser Coast are aged over 65, and the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre projects that figure will reach 35 per cent by 2041. Yet, locals lament a lack of face-to-face dementia support services. "It's very limited … so specific dementia services, we have maybe three or four at tops," Ms de Waard says. There are more than 85,000 Queenslanders living with dementia, according to Dementia Australia, but people in regional areas face additional barriers to accessing support. "There are a range of modifiable risk factors … like excess alcohol consumption, high blood pressure and depression … that might come into play more consistently for people living in regional and remote areas who perhaps have less access to services and supports," executive director Kaele Stokes says. Dr Stokes says there is a demand for more social group services like dementia-friendly choirs across the country. "Certainly face-to-face services and supports can make a real difference, particularly to people who do feel socially isolated in communities that are geographically dispersed," she says. "It often creates a level of cognitive stimulation that can be a really valuable part." Gil and Jeni Jagels' lives were forever altered when Gil was diagnosed with dementia a year ago. "He'd been in and out of hospital a couple of times with heart issues," Ms Jagels recalls. "[Doctors] had to really look at what happened and change medications before he could come home … and he came home a different person. "[The nurse] just said, 'He has dementia', and I just fell apart." What followed was a flurry of information that overwhelmed the pair until Ms Jagels stumbled across the Forget Me Nots. "The singing group is the only real support we have," she says. "I've been finding out more information [about support services] through the singing people, they've been a godsend." Mr Jagels has become a man of few words, but when his words fail, the music speaks. "Well, it's something I did as a young … ," he trails off. "You've always loved singing, haven't you?" Ms Jagels prompts her husband. "Yes," he replies. "He might be singing a different song, but what the hell — he's using his voice and he's belting it out," Ms Jagels says. As the group breaks for morning tea mid-rehearsal, Ms Jagels reflects on how her husband has improved since joining the choir. "I don't think he even would have asked for his cup of tea or coffee before, but now he asks for mine too and lets them know what biscuit he wants," she says. "I think it shows he feels comfortable there, thank God … I just wish there was more [support groups] to get us out of the house to see people." This story is part of a series exploring how regional Queenslanders are aging well outside the capital city.

Surprises and upsets as Triple J reveals Hottest 100 of Aussie songs
Australian music broadcaster Triple J yesterday revealed the results of their huge listener poll to name the 100 best Australian songs of all time – and there were a few upsets. Rock legends INXS took out the top spot with their classic ballad Never Tear Us Apart, but there were some more divisive choices elsewhere in the top 10. Coming in at second place was the Hilltop Hoods' 2003 single Nosebleed Section, a track that's now 10 x platinum here in Australia despite never actually charting in the ARIA top 50. Some in the comments section as the results were revealed on Triple J's Instagram expressed their surprise that the Aussie hip-hop act had pulled off such a high placing. Another surprise, given Triple J's indie leanings: The Veronicas' 2007 pop-dance hit Untouched has now been deemed the third-best Australian song of all time. Among those celebrating it as 'the national anthem' were those who were less enthusiastic about its placing: 'I don't get it! It's not a bad song, but seriously…. the 3rd best Australian song of all time??' asked one commenter. 'God this song sounds like a Raspberry Cruiser,' wrote another (which could be a diss or a compliment, frankly). The placing made The Veronicas the highest-charted females in a male-heavy top 100 – but they were joined in the top five by Missy Higgins, who scored a number four placing for her 2004 number one hit Scar. Rounding out the top five was another controversial entry: The classic Crowded House ballad Don't Dream It's Over. A brilliant song, sure, but as many asked in the comment section: Can we really claim it as our own when half the band (among them the man who actually wrote the song, Neil Finn) are from New Zealand? Powderfinger, Paul Kelly, Gotye and back-to-back entries from Cold Chisel rounded out the top 10. Some other surprises and notable entries, further down the list: • A couple of massive Aussie anthems made the list: John Farnham's You're The Voice at #15 and Daryl Braithwaite's The Horses at #30. • She might be our biggest pop export, but Kylie Minogue had to settle for a top 30 placing for her sole entry – Can't Get You Out Of My Head made it to number 27. • It pretty much hasn't left the charts since it was released over a decade ago, but Vance Joy's 16 x platinum monster Riptide only just snuck into the top 50 at #48. • Those who missed out: Not a single entry in the top 100 for beloved Aussie acts like Sia, Something For Kate, Troye Sivan, Madison Avenue, Tina Arena, Pete Murray, The Vines or The Easybeats.
