Johnny Lever SLAMS Modern Comedians For Vulgarity: ‘No Aukaat To Stand Before Us'

Johnny Lever criticizes today's comedians and actors for relying on vulgar jokes and Hollywood-style humour. He says real talent lies in clean comedy. Veteran comedian Johnny Lever, a name synonymous with clean, family-friendly humour for over four decades, has expressed his concern over the increasing reliance on vulgarity and double entendre in both films and stand-up comedy today. In a candid interview with actress Kunickaa Sadanand on her YouTube channel, Lever shared his disappointment with the shifting sensibilities in Indian comedy, blaming the growing influence of Hollywood and the erosion of cultural nuance. 'People are freely abusing today because of Hollywood films," Lever observed. 'In the West, it's common to use foul language and make crass jokes, and now our actors and comedians are copying that. They've developed a habit. They only watch English films now." Kunickaa echoed his sentiment, noting, 'A lot of them don't even know Hindi properly anymore." Lever, who has acted in over 300 films across a career that spans generations, believes that this unfiltered comedic style has become the norm rather than the exception. 'They pick up exact things from Hollywood, thinking, 'Chal jayega, kya farq padta hai.' That's how double meaning jokes have become so common." Turning his critique toward the current stand-up comedy scene, Lever didn't mince words. 'Most of today's stand-up content is full of double meanings. But when we were trained in the craft, we were taught never to take that route. If we start speaking double meaning, these new guys won't even be able to stand before us. But we never chose that path." In a pointed remark that seemed both a challenge and a call for introspection, Lever added, 'If they are really talented, I challenge them—say something clean and still make people laugh. That is the real test. I'm not saying they're bad, people are enjoying their content. But I have a family audience. I have to be answerable to that." He also took pride in the fact that his daughter, Jamie Lever, who has carved her own space in the comedy world, upholds the same values. 'She does solo shows too and doesn't rely on vulgarity," he said with evident pride. Ironically, Lever's latest screen appearance was in the fifth installment of the Housefull franchise, a film that drew criticism for its heavy use of innuendos and over-the-top crass humour—an unfortunate alignment with the very trend he critiques. Hari Hara Veera Mallu box office collection day 1 early report: Pawan Kalyan's action drama crosses Rs 18 cr mark; could become actor's biggest opener

Hari Hara Veera Mallu box office collection day 1 early report: Pawan Kalyan's action-adventure drama Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1 – Sword vs Spirit, starring Pawan Kalyan in the lead role, finally hit theatres on July 24. Directed by Krish Jagarlamudi and AM Jyothi Krishna, the film has received a mixed response from critics. However, it opened to strong audience turnout on its first day. According to early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk, the movie has already grossed Rs 18.68 crore at the box office. Based on early trends, Hari Hara Veera Mallu might even cross the Rs 20 crore mark. The film recorded an overall Telugu occupancy of 54.71% at the box office, with morning shows at 63.52% and afternoon shows at 45.89%. The highest theatre occupancy was reported in the Vijayawada region. Hari Hara Veera Mallu was also released in other languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. The Hindi version saw a 13.65% occupancy, followed by 11.24% in Malayalam, 10.59% in Kannada, and 9.54% in Tamil. Hari Hara Veera Mallu is expected to become Pawan Kalyan's biggest opener so far. The actor's 2022 film Bheemla Nayak earned Rs 56.5 crore at the worldwide box office. The movie is facing stiff competition from Bollywood releases such as Ahaan Panday's Saiyaara, and Hollywood films like David Corenswet starrer Superman and Marvel's The Fantastic 4: First Steps. ALSO READ | Pawan Kalyan says he hasn't abandoned Hari Hara Veera Mallu: 'Refrained from promoting films not out of arrogance, but…' An excerpt from SCREEN's review of Hari Hara Veera Mallu read, 'This is a film in which every element, from start to finish, is soaked in artifice and is completely devoid of the agency or emotional intelligence that one might even find in a regular school play. If the completely lacklustre visual effects are one issue, the narrative that piles on one exaggerated moment after another in the name of intensity makes the whopping 163-minute runtime feel almost punishing. The problem lies not just in the film's gaze, but more so in the uninspired visual realisation of the story. Despite the services of seasoned cinematographers Gnana Shekar VS (Krish Jagarlamudi's long-time collaborator) and Manoj Paramahamsa, the visual palette only makes a fleeting impression while the production design mostly resembles a theme-park version of history.' Hari Hara Veera Mallu also features Bobby Deol, Nidhhi Agerwal, Nargis Fakhri, Nora Fatehi and Sathyaraj in pivotal roles. The period drama will be released in two parts, and the second part will be called Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 2 – Battlefield.
