Manchester United warned to refuse transfer that would be 'a step too far'
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has urged the club not to sell Kobbie Mainoo, warning them that it would be 'a step too far'. Mainoo, 20, broke into United's first-team under former boss Erik ten Hag and enjoyed a meteoric rise during the 2023-24 season.
The midfielder scored as Ten Hag's side beat Manchester City to win the FA Cup and he became a starter for England later that summer, helping the Three Lions reach the final of Euro 2024. But his progress has stalled this term.
Fitness problems and a change of formation under new manager Ruben Amorim have limited Mainoo's opportunities. The United academy graduate was benched for the Europa League final and Amorim only gave him a brief cameo in stoppage time.
His lack of minutes plus the Red Devils' decision to put every player up for sale this summer has left Mainoo's future shrouded in uncertainty. Neville, like many supporters, would be gutted to see the Stockport-born starlet leave.
"Mainoo, no. That's a step too far," Neville declared on the It's Called Soccer podcast. "If we can't give Kobbie Mainoo a job in that two in midfield… I look at Mainoo and the way he plays football and I think a top club would want him.
"Why can't we make him a top player? If he's one of ours and he's shown talent. I don't know what's gone on there in the last few months. He's obviously had some injuries which has caused him a problem so he needs to stay fit, but I'd like to think he could be one of that two in midfield that Ruben Amorim plays.
"It's probably not Casemiro as his partner and it's probably not [Manuel] Ugarte as his partner, it's probably someone else in there who is better than those two, if I'm being honest. But we should be building around Kobbie Mainoo in central midfield and not because he's come through the ranks.
Would you sell Kobbie Mainoo if you were Manchester United? Have your say in the comments section.
"I'm alright for getting rid of players coming through the ranks, but not getting rid of players who come through the ranks and have shown what they can do. Marcus Rashford has been at the club a long time, [Alejandro] Garnacho has had two or three years and there's a bit of a situation going on as well. But Mainoo is a no for me. He doesn't leave."
Amorim has already assured Neville that he doesn't want to lose Mainoo, who was tipped to join Premier League rivals Chelsea in January. It came amid reports that the 20-year-old's representatives were demanding wages in the region of £150,000 per week.
"I really love my players," Amorim said. "I want to keep them, especially the talented ones. It is a hard moment and I am really happy with Kobbie. He is improving."

Viktoria Plzen lowdown ahead of Rangers Champions League showdown as insider lifts lid on 'stubborn old fox'
Former Hearts assistant Frankir McAvoy dug out his notebook from last August to go through Plzen's dangermen. The wily old fox of Plzen has already fought off one young cub on Scottish soil. Viktoria boss Miroslav Koubek and his side were too cunning for Hearts and Steven Naismith over two Europa League qualifying legs last season. Now the 73-year-old is preparing for another battle with a manager almost half his age in this week's Champions League qualifying clash against Rangers. And former Jambos assistant Frankie McAvoy is confident this time Russell Martin and Rangers can leave the veteran Czech and his players feeding off Euro scraps. McAvoy knows Hearts missed an opportunity 12 months ago when they lost 1-0 to a 96th minute Daniel Oyegoke own goal in Pilsen before failing to perform as they went down 1-0 in the second leg at Tynecastle. The main players from that Viktoria side again came to the fore as they fought back from two goals behind to dump Servette on Wednesday night and set up the two-leg showdown with Rangers. Ahead of Tuesday's clash at Ibrox, McAvoy dug out his notebook from last August to give MailSport an insight into the men who made the Czechs tick including midfielder Pavel Sulc who could yet seal a €10m move to Lyon before facing Gers. But according to the former Preston North End boss, the man in the dug out was as important as any of his stars on the park. Koubek was a powerful force and tried to get in the Jambos' heads after accusing them of time wasting tactics in the first leg, something Naismith vehemently denied. He appeared ready to go to war with his own association on Thursday before his side's league fixture with Mlada Boleslav - scheduled for Saturday - was postponed to allow them to prepare for Ibrox. McAvoy told Record Sport: 'Their manager is a wily, old, experienced guy. He's been there a few years now. 'He was a nice enough guy but I'll tell you… he was desperate for them to do well, put it that way. 'A stubborn old fox is how I would describe him. 'The little interactions we had with him you could tell his players and staff knew exactly what he was expecting of them. And to be fair he's done really well. 'Plzen are a dangerous side. They always create chances. They were extremely organised against us. 'Great record at home. It's only 12,000 capacity but a great wee arena. Their fans get right behind their team as well. 'To be fair, we nearly got a draw over there. We played a 3-5-2 that became a back five when needed and at times a 5-4-1. 'We made it tough for them and had a few snips ourselves. 'They scored in the 96th minute. The ball got crossed from the right wing to the back post area and big Daniel couldn't get his feet sorted and toe poked it beyond Craig Gordon. 'It was a killer for us. We thought we did well over the piece. 'But we probably didn't do enough in the return leg at Tynecastle. We didn't perform as well as we'd hoped. 'That's where they really impressed me. They were good away from home, really well organised, and it looks like they have done the same against Servette the other night. 'They did well in the Europa League last year. They got to the last 16 and beat Real Sociedad, Anderlecht and Dynamo Kiev on the way. 'Their number 31, Sulc, He's a good player. Skilful, direct, found good areas. He was probably their most dangerous player ( 'They played a 3-4-3 or a 3-4-1-2. They've got a kid at the back, Sampson Dweh, number 40, he could play either centre or right side, powerful, strong. 'And the boy in the centre of the park, number six, Lukas Cerv, another good player, Czech international. 'They had a massive striker, Daniel Vasulin, Number 51, who was a real handful 'Then there's Matej Vydra who I noticed scored against Servette. He had a good time in English football. 'He didn't start against us. But he's technically very good. Runs in behind, gets opportunities and chances, and he's got a goal in him. 'I thought they were a decent outfit. 'But nothing for Rangers to fear. Rangers have got a good opportunity to get through. 'The first leg being at Ibrox might help. You saw how they dealt with Panathinaikos after getting a positive result in Glasgow. 'Ibrox, with 50,000 fans in there, they need to make it as raucous as they can. Plzen did well to perform at an electric Tynecastle but Ibrox full is a different kettle of fish.' McAvoy - now number two to Mark Hughes at Carlisle United - has taken a keen interest in Martin's start to life at Ibrox. He was Alex Neil's assistant at Norwich when Martin was club captain at Carrow Road. And he could tell then that the former Scotland defender had the leadership qualities to be a success in the dug out. McAvoy said: 'I watched the game the other night against Panathinaikos. They played well. I thought they kept the ball well, they looked comfortable. 'I was impressed. I've said before that I'm confident Russell will do a good job for Rangers. 'He has a good squad and it's building all the time. 'Joe Rothwell is an excellent signing. He keeps the ball well and has good leadership qualities. 'I know young Max Aarons as well. A great boy. He's started at left back but moved to the right by the end of the game the other night. 'He had a tough two games against their wide player, Pellistri. But he's a very good player Max and I'm sure Rangers will see that over the course of the season. 'Russ will be looking at areas they can improve on. But they have got to take great confidence into the Plzen tie because Panathinaikos is as tough as they could have got at that stage. 'I was really impressed with them the other night. When you go away from home you've got to dig in and see out tough periods of the game. Sometimes you need a little luck. 'They scored at a magnificent time and after that I thought they were comfortable. 'Don't forget, Panathinaikos are a top team and there's not many people gave Rangers a chance because they're a new team with a new manager. 'Credit to Russ and his team. I really hope they can do the same against Plzen and I fancy them to get a good result.'

Arsenal transfer news: Mikel Arteta may see five stars sold amid Eberechi Eze chase
Arsenal's busy summer transfer window could continue with a deal for Eberechi Eze but focus is now turning to sales with five players potentially heading for the Emirates exit Arsenal are back in London following their pre-season tour of Asia, with Mikel Arteta's much-changed squad now fine tuning ahead of a friendly against Villarreal at the Emirates on Wednesday evening. And with a fortnight to go before their Premier League campaign begins with a trip to Manchester United, the Gunners continue to be linked with a deal for Crystal Palace and England star Eberechi Eze. That, however, may require a number of players to exit the club and reports suggest five different members of the first-team squad could potentially move on. Here are the transfer tales from in and around the Emirates to keep an eye on. Five sales Mikel Arteta could bid farewell to five of his squad before the close of the transfer window, according to the Daily Mail. Reiss Nelson is the most likely to head off amid admiring glances from Fulham and his departure would see the Gunners' wage bill trimmed by £100,000 per week. Oleksandr Zinchenko, who earns £150,000, is also for sale, while Fabio Vieira is far down the pecking order but has garnered some interest from West Ham and Albert Sambi Lokonga is another allowed to leave. Then there is Leandro Trossard, whom Arsenal want to sign a new contract but is on a shortlist of targets at Borussia Dortmund. Eze latest Eberechi Eze remains a potential addition before the transfer window closes but there remains a significant hurdle - the asking price. BBC Sport now report that Arsenal have "shown no inclination of triggering the forward's release fee", with the Gunners looking to sell before they make any more new signings. The report adds that Arsenal value Eze at less than £68m and "want to negotiate a deal beneath the agreement." Palace have so far been unwilling to negotiate a lower fee, but it is claimed that may change later in the window. Gyokeres' respect Viktor Gyokeres has refused to follow his agent in criticising former club Sporting CP for how they dealt with his summer move. The 27-year-old's Premier League switch was dragged out until last week, with clashes over a gentleman's agreement and a hefty fine issued. Gyokeres, having established himself as one of Europe's finest goalscorers with 97 goals in 104 appearances for Sporting, always looked destined to make a big switch this window. He joined the Gunners last weekend for a fee rising to £63.7million, having also been courted by Manchester United, who he chose to snub. "I don't need to throw mud at anyone," began the Swede, who made his first appearance for the Gunners against bitter rivals Tottenham on Thursday in Hong Kong. "I don't need to say what others have done or decided. "I don't do that, even though there are people who seem to need to tell others how to behave. I'm not like that. As a footballer, you always strive to reach the top. I felt ready to take the next step, and I believe many people at the club expected that before the season ended. Man Utd set low asking price to sell Rasmus Hojlund after Benjamin Sesko bid
Manchester United are willing to sell Rasmus Hojlund for £30 million this summer, according to reports. United are in talks with RB Leipzig to sign Benjamin Sesko but are facing strong competition from Newcastle for the 22-year-old. Newcastle's offer worth €80 million (£69.8m), including €75m (£65.5m) up front, has been rejected by RB Leipzig, while United are yet to make a bid. Hojlund, meanwhile, struggled to make an impact for United last season, scoring just four goals in 32 Premier League appearances, while the 22-year-old also faced criticism over his link-up play in attack. United signed Hojlund for an initial £64 million fee from Atalanta two years ago and according to BBC Sport, the club would allow the Denmark international to leave Old Trafford this summer if their £30m asking price is met. AC Milan are among the clubs who are considering a move for Hojlund, who is currently with Ruben Amorim's squad as they prepare for the final game of their pre-season tour of the United States against Everton on Sunday. Speaking this week, Hojlund made it clear that he wants to fight for his place at United. 'The most important [thing] for me is to keep working hard and stay focused and then we'll see what happens,' Hojlund said. 'My plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot. 'Competition is fine with me, it sharpens me. I'm more than ready.' More Trending Meanwhile, Amorim has refused to rule out the prospect of United selling Hojlund before the end of the summer window. 'I'm really happy with Rasmus but I don't know what is going to happen until the end of the market,' Amorim said. 'The important thing is that Rasmus is scoring goals. He's connecting really well with the team. He's improving. 'I don't know what is going to happen until the market is closed. We suffered a lot because of the lack of goals last season.'
