Al-Sultan Abdullah calls for stronger role for Pahang Royal Council

The Sun16-06-2025
KUANTAN: Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today attended the 119th Pahang Royal Council Meeting here.
Also present were His Royal Highness's children, Tengku Arif Bendahara Tengku Muhammad Iskandar Ri'ayatuddin Shah, Tengku Panglima Raja Brigadier-General Tengku Amir Nasser Ibrahim Shah, and Tengku Panglima Perang Tengku Ahmad Ismail Mu'adzam Shah.
During the meeting, His Royal Highness emphasised several important matters that required attention, among them strengthening the Royal Council so that it was not merely symbolic or ceremonial.
Al-Sultan Abdullah said that he was currently reviewing the establishment of a Royal Council Working Committee as a platform to enhance the council's functions and contributions to the people and the state.
'Among the possible roles and responsibilities are serving as an independent advisory body that conveys the people's views to the state administration, supporting environmental conservation efforts—especially on critical issues—and strengthening social networks through welfare initiatives and support for the underprivileged.
'I don't want to see Council members merely filling seats in official halls and chambers, but rather becoming key proponents and bulwarks of Pahang, offering wise counsel, leading by example, and serving with sincerity and integrity,' His Royal Highness decreed in a statement uploaded on the Pahang Sultanate's Facebook page.
His Royal Highness also emphasised that such a role would not only strengthen the royal institution but also assure the people that they had a pillar of support and a voice that is heard in the state administration.

Explain why US tariff talks failed, MP urges government

Published on: Tuesday, July 08, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan said the 25% tariff meant that the funds used to send Malaysian delegations for talks with the US had gone to waste. PETALING JAYA: An opposition MP has urged the government to explain why tariff negotiations with the US failed, following the imposition of a 25% rate on Malaysian goods effective Aug 1. In a Facebook post, Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan said the investment, trade and industry ministry's (Miti) goal of talks with Washington would naturally have been to lower the tariff rate. However, the 25% rate announced by US president Donald Trump today was higher than the 24% originally imposed. 'This clearly shows that the government has failed to fulfil the hopes of the rakyat in the matter of US tariffs. And it clearly shows the relevant minister's failure to defend the nation's interests,' he said in a jab at Miti minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz. The Bersatu Supreme Council member also said the development meant that the funds used to send Malaysian delegations for trade talks with the US had gone to waste. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Trump said the 25% tariff on Malaysian goods was 'far less' than what was needed to eliminate the country's trade deficit with Malaysia. The US president added that any attempt to reroute goods through other countries to avoid higher tariffs would be penalised by the application of higher rates. Miti has said it will continue discussions with its US counterparts, and that it remains committed to engaging the US on a 'balanced' and 'mutually beneficial' trade agreement. Miti deputy secretary-general (trade) Mastura Ahmad Mustafa led the tariff negotiations with Washington from May 28 to May 30. Tengku Zafrul then led a delegation last month and said discussions with the US trade representative and secretary of commerce on tariff-related negotiations had made good progress. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PD Bersatu division call for leadership power transition

PORT DICKSON: The Port Dickson Bersatu division has unanimously passed a motion calling for a leadership power transition to allow the party to be more proactive in fighting for issues affecting the people. The motion, filed by the Kg Bagan Pinang branch during the division's annual general meeting on Sunday (July 6), proposed that a power transition plan be put in place to allow deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin be given the powers of the president to enable him to carry out his duties as Opposition leader more effectively. In a Facebook post, Port Dickson Bersatu deputy chief Akkil Aizat Othman said the division felt the time was apt to have a succession plan. "At the same time, we are not suggesting to sideline the president (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin). "Muhyiddin can be made adviser where he will be able to lead us to Putrajaya (to win the next general elections)," he said in a Facebook post. Akkil Aizat expressed hope that the motion could be debated or discussed by the party leadership. "The younger members feel that Perikatan Nasional and Bersatu need to put in more effort to deal with people-related issues. "The current government has been grappling with such issues but unfortunately, we, the Opposition, have not been able to take advantage of this or to deal with these efficiently," he said. Drawing an analogy from a badminton match, Akkil Aizat said the Opposition must smash the shuttlecock if its opponent lifts it high and earn the point rather than give it away. He said Muhyiddin has served exceptionally as president and this was evident when he was premier during the Covid-19 pandemic. "He had administered the government well till we were able to come out of the pandemic. "But in recent times, we have noticed a glaring weakness on the part of the leadership to deal with issues affecting the rakyat," he said, adding that the party needed to convince voters that it was the right choice to lead. This, Badrul Hisham said, was important as the party had not been aggressive in championing the people's issues despite the so-called failures of the government. He said the power transition plan has to be put in place now, where the deputy president is given an important role in the day-to-day running of operations and to represent it in talks with other leaders. In another post, division chief Badrul Hisham Shaharin said the division had unanimously approved the motion for a power transition plan and additional powers for the main leadership so that Bersatu could be more aggressive and pro-active in fighting for the people's issues.
