Ellen DeGeneres moved to UK because of Trump, plans to remarry there
The comedian and former talk show host — among several celebrity donors who supported Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign — confirmed that she and her wife Portia de Rossi left their home country for the U.K. during the 2024 presidential election and decided to stay when the MAGA leader won re-election for a second term.
'Yes. We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, 'He got in.' And we're like, 'We're staying here,'' she told British broadcaster Richard Bacon during a conversation on Sunday.
Earlier this month, DeGeneres took to Instagram to support Rosie O'Donnell after Trump threatened to revoke her citizenship. O'Donnell, who has a near-20-year-feud with the ex 'Apprentice' star, revealed in March that she had packed up and headed to Ireland just days before the Republican president began his second term on Jan. 20.
DeGeneres has been keeping a relatively low profile after ending her talk show in 2022 amid allegations of a toxic workplace environment. She later headlined a final comedy tour across the U.S.
Last year, the couple purchased a 'part-time house' in the Cotswolds area of south central England where they planned to spend four months out of the year. But after Trump became president again, the couple made the permanent decision.
Calling her house 'absolutely beautiful,' DeGeneres, who came out as gay in 1997, said it was the first time the pair saw snow there this past winter.
'We love it here,' she added. 'Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks.'
The 'Ellen' star continued: 'We're just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture, everything you see is charming and it's just a simpler way of life. It's clean. Everything here is just better, the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.'
There may be more wedding plans underway, too, for the couple who first wed in 2008.
'The Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage,' DeGeneres said in reference to a June call by southern Baptist delegates for a gay marriage ban. 'They're trying to literally stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it. Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we're going to get married here.'

Gastonia resident and RNC Chair Michael Whatley expected to launch bid for Tillis' seat
Michael Whatley, a Gastonia resident and the chair of the Republican National Party, is expected to seek the seat held by U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, who announced he would not seek re-election voting against advancing President Donald Trump's " big, beautiful bill," Republicans' massive domestic policy legislation. Whatley, one of the driving forces in the GOP today, would likely face former Gov. Roy Cooper in the race. The Democrat, whose final term as governor was bookended by the COVID-19 pandemic and Tropical Storm Helene, is expected to soon launch a campaign, according to reporting from Axios. Whatley began his climb in the GOP more than 2 decades ago. He served as chair of the Gaston County Republican Party from 1999-2001. In 2019 he was to picked to lead the North Carolina Republican Party, and in 2024 he became chair of the Republican National Committee. He has served as a senior official in the George W. Bush administration, and as chief of staff for former Sen. Elizabeth Dole. Politico reported this week that Whatley has the backing of Trump, whose daughter-in-law Lara Trump had also been rumored to be considering a bid. In a July 24 social media post, Lara Trump confirmed she would not be seeking the Senate seat. 'I am deeply grateful for the encouragement and support I have received from the people of my home state whom I love so much,' she wrote. Whatley did not respond to a July 24 request for comment from the Asheville Citizen Times. A White House spokesperson also did not respond to a request for comment on the president's reported endorsement. On the Democratic side, Axios first reported Cooper's intentions July 23. When reached by the Citizen Times, Morgan Jackson, a longtime political adviser to Cooper, declined to confirm Axios' reporting, but said the former governor 'would be making his intentions known in the coming days.' Cooper, who served two terms as North Carolina's governor, is a likely frontrunner to win his party's primary. Former Congressman Wiley Nickel is also vying for the seat, currently held by Tillis, who annnounced in June that he would not seek a third term in office. A matchup between Cooper and Whatley will likely be a high-stakes, expensive election that could determine whether Republicans can maintain control of the Senate. The race could prove to be 'as close to a toss-up as exists in American politics,' Chris Cooper, a professor of political science and public affairs at Western Carolina University, told the Citizen Times on July 24. Cooper, who is not related to the former governor, said both are 'heavyweight candidates with access to deep pockets and networks.' But neither Roy Cooper, nor Whatley, have outsized personalities that have often dominated politics in recent years. 'I think people who are expecting a barn-burner campaign driven by candidate narratives may be surprised,' Cooper said. Sarah Honosky contributed reporting. 🎥 Spend a day with Arsenal starlet Myles Lewis-Skelly in Singapore
Among the biggest talking points in the Arsenal fandom world during the 2024/25 campaign was the rapid rise of club starlet Myles Lewis-Skelly. The 18-year-old London native not only successfully cracked the barrier to the senior team under Mikel Arteta but has quickly developed into one of the best shut-down full-backs in the English top flight, and is now in the running to be England's leading man in that position ahead of the 2026 World Cup. But past his budding level of fame and gravitas, fans will often jump at the chance for deeper insight on players they hold great admiration for. As the club are in the midst of their pre-season preparations and on tour in Singapore, Lewis-Skelly and the club have lifted the veil surrounding the youngster, offering the chance to spend a day with the lad from Denmark Hill. Seen greeting his friend and club star Bukayo Saka at the team breakfast, being put through his paces in training, and enjoying a night out at one of the city's iconic landmarks, it's the perfect palate teaser ahead of another season of anticipation and expectation in North London. 📸 Yong Teck Lim - 2025 Getty Images
