Bangladesh hopes for trade agreement with US

Fashion United08-07-2025
Dhaka, July 8, 2025 – Bangladesh, the world's second-largest textile manufacturer, still hopes to reach an agreement with the US to avoid the sharp rise in customs duties threatened by Donald Trump. A senior official told AFP on Tuesday.
The textile industry contributes 80 percent of the South Asian country's total exports. One-fifth of its production is destined for the US market, sold under brands like Timberland, Vans and The North Face.
"We are hopeful of securing a reduction because the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has sent us another draft agreement," Mahbubur Rahman, secretary of the Bangladeshi Ministry of Commerce, told AFP.
According to Rahman, the two officials responsible for national security and trade matters within the interim government are currently in the US to "work on the issue". Tariff threats and trade deficit
In April, Trump threatened to increase tariffs on Bangladeshi products entering the US from 16 to 37, then 35 percent. The US president had announced a general increase in customs duties, especially for countries with which the US has a large trade deficit.
Bangladesh exported 8.36 billion dollars worth of goods to the US in 2024. The US only sold 2.21 billion dollars worth of goods back to Bangladesh, according to official statistics.
To reduce this difference, Bangladesh has offered to import more wheat, cotton, oil or gas, and Boeing aircraft from the US. Concerns for employment and the future of the sector
Mahmud Hasan Khan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), described the issue of US tariffs as "a huge challenge for the entire sector".
"We are worried about job losses in Bangladesh and the future of our main export market, the US," Mohiuddin Rubel, the previous head of the BGMEA, told AFP. This article was translated to English using an AI tool.

Bangladesh Air Force jet crashes into a Dhaka school and kills 19

According to the military and a fire official, the Chinese-made F-7 BGI aircraft crashed into the campus of Milestone School and College, in the Uttara neighbourhood, in the afternoon as students were attending classes. The military said the jet took off at 1.06pm local time and crashed soon after, catching fire immediately. The cause was not immediately clear. It is the deadliest plane crash in the Bangladeshi capital in recent memory. Local media indicated most of the injured were students. Relatives arrived at the scene as rescuers, using tricycle rickshaws or whatever was available, transported the injured to local hospitals. Rafiqa Taha, a student who was not present at the time of the crash, told The Associated Press by phone that the school, with some 2,000 students, offers classes from elementary to twelfth grade. 'I was terrified watching videos on TV,' the 16-year-old said. 'My God. It's my school.' Bangladesh's interim leader Muhammad Yunus pledged an investigation into the crash, expressing his deep sorrow over the 'heartbreaking accident' at Milestone School and College. In a statement, he lamented the 'irreparable' loss suffered by 'Air Force personnel, students, parents, teachers, staff, and others', calling it 'a moment of deep national grief'.

Police Scotland asks for Northern Irish officers to help with Trump visit

Police Scotland has asked for Northern Irish officers to assist with President Donald Trump's visit this month. Trump will be at both of his golf courses in Scotland: Turnberry in Ayrshire and Menie in Aberdeenshire, between July 25 and 29. The President will meet with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer while in Aberdeen, while plans are being put in place for the President to meet First Minister John Swinney, according to the Scottish Government. Ahead of the major visit, Police Scotland has submitted a mutual aid request to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) for additional officers. Police forces usually make requests ahead of major operations or when their resources are stretched. The PSNI has confirmed the request is being considered, however, a spokesperson said the force will have to ensure its 'own operational competence'. A PSNI spokesperson said: 'There are well established processes for any UK based Police Services to request support from other services at times of peak demand. 'These requests are managed via the National Police Co-ordination Centre (NPoCC) and we can confirm that PSNI have received a request to provide mutual aid to Police Scotland which we are currently assessing. 'The decision to provide officers under the mutual aid process will be considered against our own demands, ensuring that we retain the capacity to respond effectively to local issues and maintain our own operational competence.' This comes as the Scottish Police Federation confirmed it was considering taking legal action over the plans surrounding US President's visit. The organisation believes the operation breaches legally binding workplace arrangements and the Presidential visit will have a significant impact on officers. Police Scotland has been contacted for comment. Get all the latest news from around the country Follow STV News Scan the QR code on your mobile device for all the latest news from around the country

BREAKING NEWS Kristi Noem gives harrowing update on 'scum of the earth' illegal migrant who shot border agent in the face

The illegal immigrant who shot an off-duty border agent in the face over the weekend was detained Monday morning. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem gave the update during a press conference where she said she visited with the agent who was shot and his family. The agent who was shot was able to use his sidearm to strike one of his two attackers – both of whom have a criminal record and are in the U.S. illegally. 'There's absolutely zero reason that someone who is scum of the earth like this should be running loose on the streets of New York City,' Noem said. President Donald Trump 's immigration team vowed to flood sanctuary cities with agents to arrest and deport criminal migrants in the wake of a shooting of a Customs and Enforcement officer. 'What we'll do in a city like this is we'll double down,' Noem said in her briefing alongside border czar Tom Homan and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Rodney Scott. 'We'll put more agents here, we'll put more personnel here, we'll give them more equipment, more training for situations where they might have to go into a dangerous neighborhood where local law enforcement won't be there to have their backs.' This story is breaking and will be updated.
