UCSD, astronauts test new cancer-fighting drug in space
Scientists from UCSD's Sanford Stem Cell Institute are working in collaboration with Axiom Space and the JM Foundation on the research project called Cancer in LEO-3, which aims to test how cancer cells behave in response to radiation and microgravity in low Earth orbit (LEO).
Catriona Jamieson, M.D., Ph.D. at the Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center at UCSD Medical Center in La Jolla, is the primary investigator on the project, in partnership with researcher Jessica Pham.

The study focuses on the anti-cancer drug 'rebecsinib' which was developed by Dr. Jamieson and her lab. Researchers say rebecsinib has the potential to fight 23 different types of cancer.
The drug launched into space for further testing aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft and SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on Axiom Space's Ax-4 mission on Wednesday, June 11.
On Axiom Space's previous mission, Ax-3, the new drug acted as a 'kill switch' by stopping the growth of 'ADAR1-expressing breast cancer organoids,' according to researchers.
During the current mission, Ax-4, astronauts on the International Space Station will test how rebecsinib affects tumor organoids derived from cancer stem cells related to leukemia, ovarian cancer, metastatic breast cancer and glioblastoma multiforme.
The Ax-4 crew includes astronauts from India, Poland and Hungary. According to Axiom Space, the mission marks each nation's first trip to space in over 40 years.
Peggy Whitson from the U.S. serves as commander on the Ax-4 mission. She is accompanied by Shubhanshu Shukla, an Indian Air Force pilot, and mission specialists Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland, and Tibor Kapu from Hungary.

Three NASA astronauts living aboard the International Space Station (ISS) marked Independence Day with a few heartfelt words for their compatriots here on Earth. It was written by the American members of the station's current Expedition 73 mission, Nichole Ayers, Jonny Kim and Anne McClain. All three are members of the U.S military — Ayers is a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force, McClain is an Army colonel and Kim is a lieutenant commander in the Navy, as well as a former SEAL — so Independence Day has a special meaning for them. "This is a special holiday for me. It just reminds us of the freedom that we get to enjoy and that we have enjoyed for so many years," Ayers said in a 160-second video, which was recorded on June 16 but posted by NASA on Thursday (July 3). "Protecting that freedom is important to all of us here as military officers, but also NASA astronauts," she added. "And we are proud to serve our country, both on Earth and in space." "For me, the Fourth of July represents the responsibilities that we each have — to whom much is given, much is expected," McClain said. "Our forefathers gave us the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and every generation must protect that for future generations." Kim said the Fourth of July is a "deep day of reflection" for him, an occasion to remember American ideals and honor the sacrifices of those who have helped uphold them. "And to those following our mission, the spirit of exploration, just like the spirit of freedom and democracy, is what has made our country so great," he added. The trio spoke in front of a large American flag, which they had affixed to an ISS module wall. They also provided more patriotic flair toward the end of the video: All three did a celebratory backflip, revealing socks with a stars-and-stripes theme. It also houses record-setting former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, who's now the director of human spaceflight for the Houston-based company Axiom Space. Whitson is commanding Axiom's four-person Ax-4 mission, which arrived at the ISS on June 26 for a roughly two-week stay. Her three crewmates are pilot Shubhanshu Shukla of India; mission specialist Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, a European Space Agency astronaut from Poland; and mission specialist Tibor Kapu, who hails from Hungary. There are four other people on station at the moment as well, all of them members of Expedition 73: cosmonauts Kirill Peskov, Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky, as well as Takuya Onishi of JAXA (the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency).

New FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Promo Spot Shows Off Bearded Thing and a Bit of Tension — GeekTyrant
Marvel Studios just dropped a quick new promo for The Fantastic Four: First Steps on their official TikTok, and while it clocks in at a brisk 15 seconds, there's a decent amount of new footage. Right off the bat, Johnny Storm throws down a line, 'Time to save the planet.' But what's more interesting is what comes after. Reed Richards is shown telling the team to trust him, while the editing cuts to both Johnny and Ben Grimm reacting with serious hesitation. The promo also offers another brief look at The Thing… with a beard. It's so funny seeing Ben Grimm's The Thing rocking the rock facial fuzz. It's a look pulled from more recent comic runs, but seeing it in live-action is catching a lot of people off guard. As for the rating, no shocker here: the film has officially been rated PG-13 for 'action/violence and some language.' Standard fare for a Marvel outing. Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel's First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing—as they face their most daunting challenge yet. Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). 'The Great Dying' mass extinction was a warning from the trees, study says
It happened before, and could happen again…. That's the message in a new study about the catastrophic collapse of Earth's tropical forests due to natural volcanic causes 252 million years ago. The collapse of tropical forests was the primary cause of the prolonged global warming that followed, according to a new study published July 2 in the British journal Nature Communications. This coincided with a mass extinction, likely the worst in Earth's history. 'There is a warning here about the importance of Earth's present-day tropical forests," study co-author and University of Leeds professor Benjamin Mills said, in a statement: "If rapid warming causes them to collapse in a similar manner, then we should not expect our climate to cool to preindustrial levels, even if we stop emitting CO2. 'Indeed, warming could continue to accelerate in this case even if we reach zero human emissions. We will have fundamentally changed the carbon cycle in a way that can take geological timescales to recover, which has happened in Earth's past.' The huge climate changes back then occurred during the Permian–Triassic Mass Extinction – sometimes referred to as the "Great Dying," which happened around 252 million years ago, leading to the massive loss of marine species and significant declines in terrestrial plants and animals. The event has been attributed to intense global warming triggered by a period of volcanic activity in Siberia, known as the Siberian Traps, the study says. This rapid increase in carbon dioxide in Earth's atmosphere and the resulting temperature increase is thought to be the primary kill mechanism for much of life at the time, according to the Conversation. However, scientists had been unable to pinpoint why super-greenhouse conditions persisted for around five million years afterwards. Now, in the new study, researchers have gathered data that supports the theory that the demise of tropical forests, and their slow recovery, limited carbon sequestration – a process where carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere and held in plants, soils or minerals. Our current understanding is that it was high temperatures which resulted from huge volcanic carbon dioxide emissions over thousands of years, Mills said in an e-mail to USA TODAY. "This volcanic event is called the Siberian Traps and may be the biggest to ever have occurred." "Yes," Mills said, adding that the climate had already warmed, which initially caused the tropical forests to die back, but the removal of forests took away one of the planet's most important carbon removal processes – photosynthesis. The lack of this "carbon sink" caused CO2 levels to build up even further, which drove excess warming. "While the climate is currently warming (and is doing so faster than during the event 252 million years ago), we are not yet at the temperature where tropical forests are expected to reach a tipping point and transition into a carbon source rather than sink," Mills told USA TODAY. "So it is not happening now, but we may not be that far away." We have warmed the planet by about 1 degree C since the Industrial Revolution, and estimates for Amazon rainforest tipping points range from 2 to 6 degrees C. It is hard to estimate this accurately. The Triassic super-greenhouse took thousands of years to establish, but because we are emitting carbon dioxide much more quickly than in the deep past, we might expect effects to begin to occur "over hundreds of years," Mills said. "To see 'super greenhouse' conditions we would need to remove almost all of the tropical forested area. It is debatable whether this could occur in the present day where the plants are different, and the shape of the continents is different than in the past. But personally I do not want us to run this experiment!" Speaking about the new study, co-author Jianxin Yu of the China University of Geosciences added: 'Let's make sure our work transcends academia: it is a responsibility to all life on Earth, today and beyond."
