Arsenal signed midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for £51 million. Zubimendi will wear the number 36 shirt.
Arsenal announced on Sunday that they have signed midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, having reportedly activated his £51 million ($70 million) release clause.
Euro 2024 winner Zubimendi, who had been previously targeted by Liverpool and linked with Real Madrid, described the move as a 'huge moment" in his career.
Martin said: 'This is a huge moment in my career. It's the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are.
'I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me. They have shown their potential recently and the best is yet to come."
Sporting Director, Andrea Berta, added: 'We are so happy to bring Martin to Arsenal and have a lot of pride in finalising this transfer. Martin was a key target for us and we all know that he is a perfect fit for our squad with the high quality he has.
'We welcome Martin and his family to the club. We look forward to him settling in with his teammates and are very excited to see him playing in an Arsenal shirt."
Mikel Arteta added: 'Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team. He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us.
'The standard he has consistently performed at over the last few seasons for both club and country is exactly why we are so excited to have him with us. We all welcome Martin and his family to the club."
Who Is Martin Zubimendi?
Martin Zubimendi, aged 26, joins from Real Sociedad, where he made 236 appearances across all competitions at the first-team level after graduating from the club's academy. In April 2021, he played a pivotal role in helping Sociedad win the delayed 2019/20 Copa del Rey against intercity rivals Athletic Club, alongside current Gunner Mikel Merino.
Martin was a key player in the 2022/23 season, contributing significantly as Real Sociedad achieved their highest league finish in recent history, ending the season in fourth place and qualifying for the Champions League for only the third time, and the first in 10 years.
As a Spanish international, Martin started all five games in the 2020 Olympic Games, where Spain claimed silver in Tokyo. He has since made 19 senior appearances for La Roja, winning the 2023 UEFA Nations League and helping his country defeat England 2-1 to win Euro 2024, coming on as a half-time substitute.
Martin will wear the number 36 shirt and will join his new teammates at the Sobha Realty Training Centre when the team reports for pre-season.

Soccer-Putellas finds flow state as Spain thump Belgium 6-2

By Philip O'Connor HT Image THUN, Switzerland, July 7 (Reuters) - Spain striker Alexia Putellas scored two cracking goals as her side defeated Belgium 6-2 on Monday to all but guarantee themselves a spot in the knockout stage at the Women's Euros, with the 31-year-old saying she found a flow state in the game that made it come easy to her. Finding herself in the zone on a wet, blustery evening, Putellas picked up her second straight player of the game award and contributed hugely to Spain overcoming a sloppy start to put the Belgians to the sword. "I think there are plenty of moments in a game, the team had an excellent performance, and even if we almost always have things we can improve, I believe that team is fine. We feel comfortable, if there's something that doesn't work we can change and adapt," she told reporters. Putellas opened the scoring with a typical Spanish goal midway through the first half, punctuating an intricate passing move with a powerful strike, and she netted Spain's sixth goal late on to cap a fine individual display. Asked whether her flow state came from her own performance or from that of the team, Putellas said it was a little bit of both. "They go hand in hand; as an individual you think about the group and when you feel we are all together, you flow, it makes me feel good of course," she explained. "I have this role of creating options, sometimes I finish them, sometimes others do, (but) I'm feeling great." Belgium proved a tough nut to crack but Putellas and her team trusted themselves to score, no matter who ended up getting the goals. "When we have them in the low block, we have more options, we are closer to the box. It's not that it's better for me or affects my performance, my objective is to choose the best action in every situation," Putellas said. (Reporting by Philip O'Connor; editing by Clare Fallon)

Ivan Rakitic, former Barcelona, Croatia midfielder announces retirement at 37

Ivan Rakitic, one of the most celebrated midfielders, announced his retirement from professional football on Monday (July 7) at the age of 37. The Croatian star, known for his illustrious career at FC Barcelona and Sevilla, shared an emotional message via social media, reflecting on a career that spanned nearly two decades. Born in Switzerland to Croatian parents, Ivan Rakitic began his professional career at FC Basel, where he showcased his talent. His move to Schalke 04 in 2007 marked his ascent in European football, but it was in Spain where he truly came into the limelight. After joining Sevilla in 2011 for €2.5 million, Rakitic became a star, captaining the team and leading them to the 2014 Europa League title. His performances earned him a €18 million transfer to FC Barcelona in 2014, where he would achieve the pinnacle of his career. Rakitic's six seasons at Barcelona (2014–2020) were remarkable. Under coach Luis Enrique, he played a significant role in the club's historic 2015 treble, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League. His opening goal in the Champions League final against Juventus in Berlin remains a defining moment for Barca fans. 'Then came Barca. You made me live a dream I wouldn't even have dared to imagine,' Rakitic wrote in his heartfelt retirement message, reflecting on playing alongside legends like Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Andrés Iniesta. Over his time at Barcelona, Rakitic made 310 appearances, scored 36 goals, and won 13 trophies, including four La Liga titles and four Copa del Reys. After leaving Barcelona in 2020, Rakitic returned to Sevilla, where he added another Europa League title in 2023. His final seasons saw him play for Al Shabab in the Saudi Pro League and Hajduk Split in his native Croatia, fulfilling a personal dream. 'Football, you gave me more than I could ever imagine,' he wrote, expressing gratitude for a career that included 17 trophies across his clubs. Rakitic's contributions extended to the international stage, where he earned 106 caps for Croatia and played a key role in their 2018 World Cup final run. Though he retired from international football in 2019, his legacy with the national team remains strong. Following his announcement, FC Barcelona posted, 'Football will miss you, Ivan. We wish you all the best in this new chapter of your life.' Sevilla also honored their former captain, highlighting his 323 appearances and 53 goals for the club.

Barca's Szczesny renews leaving Ter Stegen future in doubt

Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has renewed his contract until 2027, the La Liga champions said on Monday. 'The Polish goalkeeper staying is recognition and a prize for his great season between the sticks for Barca, after an unexpected arrival in a strange context,' wrote the Catalan club in a statement. Szczesny had retired from football when Barcelona signed him in October to replace injured stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who was ruled out for most of the season with a ruptured patella tendon. The 35-year-old impressed as Barcelona won La Liga and the Copa del Rey, with Ter Stegen only returning to the squad in the final weeks of the season. The German international, 33, commands a high salary at Barcelona and Spanish media report the financially-struggling club would like to make savings in that regard. Barca signed Garcia from Espanyol for 26.34 million euros ($31 million) on a six-year deal in June, and also still have another goalkeeper in Inaki Pena on the books.
