Jharkhand CM, Governor pay tributes to tribal warriors of Santhal rebellion on 'Hul Diwas'

The Hindu30-06-2025
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar on Monday (June 30, 2025) saluted the sacrifices made by tribal warriors of the Santhal rebellion on 'Hul Diwas' and extended greetings to the people.
Hul Diwas is observed to commemorate the anniversary of Santhal rebellion against British rule in 1855-56. Two brothers -- Sido and Kanhu Murmu -- led the uprising, also known as the Santhal Hul, which took place in present-day Jharkhand.
"Salute to the struggle and martyrdom of the great heroes of the Hul rebellion, immortal martyrs Sido-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, Phoolo-Jhano and other brave martyrs. Before the freedom struggle, our heroes of the Hul rebellion had lit the torch of tribal identity against the exploitation and atrocities of the British rule and moneylenders and for the protection of water, forest and land," Mr. Soren said in a post on social media.
The teachings of brave forefathers will always inspire people for justice and self-respect, he added.
"Long live the immortal brave martyrs Sido and Kanhu! May the brave martyrs of Jharkhand remain immortal! Hail Jharkhand!" Mr. Soren added.
Mr. Gangwar also extended greetings to tribals and saluted the fighters of the Santhal rebellion.
"Their struggle against the British rule will always inspire future generations to fight against injustice and serve the motherland," Mr. Gangwar said in a post on X.
The rebellion, which began in Bhognadih village, aimed to address the exploitation of the Santhal people by the British and local landlords.

HK Arrests 18-Year-Old for Writing ‘Seditious Words' in Bathroom

(Bloomberg) -- Hong Kong police arrested an 18-year-old on suspicion he left what they called 'seditious' messages in a bathroom, adding to a recent series of national security actions that signal authorities' continued efforts to curb dissent. The man is accused of being 'involved in writing seditious words in a commercial building toilet on three separate occasions,' the government said Wednesday. The content allegedly provoked hatred and disaffection against the government and incited others to defy the law. The move is the latest in a flurry of enforcement actions against perceived threats to the Chinese state in the former British colony. Hong Kong is seeking to burnish its status as a finance hub after its image took a hit from strict pandemic controls and clampdown on political freedoms. Earlier this month police arrested four men for allegedly advocating independence for the semi-autonomous Chinese territory. In June, local authorities took their first known joint operation with Beijing's security officers to investigate a case of alleged foreign collusion. Police also banned a Taiwanese video game that month for allegedly calling for armed revolution. In its Wednesday statement, the National Security Department of the police charged the man for carrying out 'with a seditious intention an act or acts that had a seditious intention,' a crime that's punishable by up to seven years of imprisonment on first conviction. The offense is defined in the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, commonly known as Article 23, which was fast-tracked into domestic law last year. It's been invoked in addition to the Beijing-imposed National Security Law of 2020, which authorities used to detain and imprison dozens of leading democracy activists. The Hong Kong government didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. More stories like this are available on

A strong advocate of civil rights, he used journalism as a tool of resistance, founding the weeklies Kesari in Marathi and Mahratta in English. A scholar and philosopher, Tilak played a foundational role in shaping India's early independence movement. He led the Indian Home Rule League after its formation in 1914 and co-signed the 1916 Lucknow Pact with Mohammed Ali Jinnah, which promoted Hindu-Muslim unity in the national movement. A scholar, lawyer, and journalist, Tilak played a pivotal role in awakening nationalist sentiments through his writings and public addresses. His iconic assertion—"Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it"—became a rallying cry that inspired countless Indians to join the freedom struggle. His deep connect with the people earned him the title 'Lokmanya," signifying the public's recognition of his leadership and vision. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 10:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
