The Tories' Reshuffle Won't Fend Off Reform's Challenge

The mercury is rising on community tensions in the UK. This message is no longer the preserve of people who flam up every small crisis into a bigger one; Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner warns 'the social fabric' needs repairing as police in Essex face a wave of residents' protests over the housing of migrants in their midst. A More in Common opinion poll this week reveals that 73% believe that it is 'very' or 'quite likely' that there will soon be race riots.
The sleepy market town of Epping has become the latest tinder box. Outside the unassuming Bell Hotel, recently converted into a hostel for asylum seekers, there have been violent clashes between far-right thugs and Socialist Worker Party troublemakers who have hijacked a local dispute for their own opposing purposes.

'Offensive damage' caused to village football club's pitches

A grassroots village football club has said that it is 'disappointed' after 'offensive damage' was found on its pitches. Warwick Wanderers AFC, which are based Warwick Bridge's Downagate, believe that the 'offensive damage' was caused between Saturday, July 26 and Wednesday, July 30. The club also believe that the damage was caused by an 'electric pedal bike' after they received reports of an individual riding on the club's pitches in recent weeks. The damage comes after the club recently renovated two of its pitches at a 'cost of £12,000'. The club is now in the process of reviewing CCTV footage captured by the Downagate Community Centre and plans to pass relevant information on to Cumbria Police. In a statement, the club called the damage 'completely unacceptable' and 'disgusting'. They said: "We have some really disappointing news to share with regarding offensive damage found on the pitches at Downagate yesterday. "Between Saturday, July 26 and Wednesday, July 30 an unknown person has caused damage to two of our pitches, which were recently renovated at a cost of £12,000 during which an offensive drawing has been gouged into the grass. "This is not only completely unacceptable on a damage point of view but also will impact in the hundreds of young children who will see this, which is disgusting. "It is believed the damage may have been caused by an electric pedal bike as reports have been received of an individual riding on the pitches over the last couple of weeks. "Enquiries are now ongoing with Downagate Community Centre to view the CCTV, which covers the pitches, and any individual seen to cause damage will have their details passed to Police for further action to be taken. "For the benefit of any doubt, the pitches at Downagate are for footballing purposes or for events agreed with Downagate Community Centre, they are not for the use of anything that causes damage." Man appears in court accused of murdering woman, 21, found dead in house

A man has appeared in court accused of murdering a woman who was found dead in a house in West Yorkshire. Courtney Angus, 21, was discovered at an address in Norfolk Street in Batley on Saturday. On Friday, Michael Moore, who uses the name Michael Doherty, made his first appearance before a crown court judge. The 37-year-old, of Norfolk Street in Batley, appeared at Leeds Crown Court via video link from prison, and spoke only to say his name was Michael Doherty rather than Michael Moore – the name used by the police. He was not asked to enter pleas during the hearing, and was remanded in custody until his next appearance for a plea and trial preparation hearing at Leeds Crown Court on September 5. Judge Tom Bayliss KC set a date of January 26 for the trial, which is expected to last five days. Officers were called to reports of an armed robbery at Asda in Dewsbury at 9.20pm on Saturday. They arrested a man, who told officers about a woman who he believed to be dead inside a house on Norfolk Street in Batley. A knife was seized at the scene, police said. Officers attended the address in Batley and found Ms Angus, from Dewsbury. Moore/Doherty is charged with murdering Ms Angus, and with possession of a bladed article, affray and two counts of threatening a person with a bladed article in a public place. Police said these charges relate to incidents in Dewsbury on the same day. After her death was confirmed, Ms Angus's family released a statement which said: 'Our lives have been shattered and turned upside down with the news that no parent wants to hear – that our gorgeous daughter and sister is no longer with us. 'Courtney had a beautiful soul. She was a lover of music, socialising and having fun. Her whole family is heartbroken over the loss of such an amazing woman.'

Harry Redknapp's £5m Sandbanks mansion targeted by hammer-wielding burglars

Burglars armed with hammers have smashed into Harry Redknapp's £5 million mansion in Dorset and stolen jewellery belonging to his wife Sandra The break-in took place last Friday while the couple were away — with the former Spurs and West Ham manager reportedly attending a function and Sandra in London at the time. According to The Sun, masked intruders used a sledgehammer and other tools to force their way through the front door of the luxury gated property. The burglars were caught on CCTV, though it remains unclear how many were involved. Sources said the gang appeared to have specifically targeted the Sandbanks-based home, with speculation they may have used floorplans found online from property listings, as the mansion is currently up for sale. Police have not confirmed the value of the items stolen, but it is understood the burglars made off with jewellery belonging to Mrs Redknapp. The source said: 'It was clearly organised. The raiders must have known the house was empty 'The criminals would only have to keep watch on the property and break in once the coast was clear, knowing the full layout of the house in advance.' A spokesperson for Mr Redknapp told The Sun that Mr Redknapp did not 'want to make a fuss', leaving it as a 'matter for the police.' Dorset Police has confirmed the force is looking for the thieves. The couple have lived in the home since 2021. They are planning on moving to another villa in the Sandbanks beach resort area, which is currently under construction. The Sandbanks is one of the UK's most expensive areas to buy a home, according to Rightmove. Asking prices in the area sit at around three times more expensive than the national average of £378,240. Other residents include interior designer Celia Sawyer and cricketer Sir Geoffrey Boycott. The former was victim to an attempted burglary in May. The Standard reported earlier this week that Redknapp's wife Sandra had been hospitalised. Details of her condition have not been disclosed. The pair have been married for more than 57 years and have shared their love story in their joint 2022 memoir titled 'When Harry Met Sandra: Our Story'.
