US FDA approves use of Sanofi's meningococcal vaccine in infants
The vaccine, branded as MenQuadfi, is already approved for individuals aged two years and older to protect against the four most common strains of meningococcal bacteria - A, C, W and Y, the company said on 23 May 2025.
Meningococcal infections, caused by the Neisseria meningitidis bacteria, can cause serious, sometimes deadly, bloodstream infections, as well as severe swelling in the brain and spinal cord. British drugmaker GSK's shot Menveo is approved in children as young as two months and adults up to 55 years of age.
"I think for convenience factor and accessibility... it is nice to have options," said Patty Sabey, a paediatrician with Stanford Medicine Children's Health, ahead of the decision.
The approval was based on data from three late-stage studies involving more than 6,000 participants aged six weeks to 19 months, which showed that MenQuadfi was as effective as Menveo when co-administered with other routine paediatric vaccines.
Sabey said meningococcal vaccine is not a routine vaccine for infants in the U.S. even though young infants, especially under one year, are at higher risk of infection.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently recommends all adolescents aged 11 to 12 years should receive a meningococcal vaccine, followed by a booster dose at age 16 years. The agency also recommends that individuals aged two months and older who are at increased risk of the disease should receive the vaccine.
According to preliminary data from the CDC, 503 confirmed and probable cases of meningococcal disease were reported last year, the highest since 2013.

MCAS is a condition in which toxins or pathogens cause the immune cells to over-produce chemicals to combat the invader, leading to symptoms such as itching, flushing, hives, abdominal pain, diarrhea, low blood pressure, dizziness and brain fog. Bee's MCAS were triggered from food-based mycotoxins, which she confirmed with a battery of medical tests. In a recent video, she tried eating breaded shrimp at a Thai restaurant. The video received nearly 2.1 million views on TikTok, including that of TikTok's famous allergist, Dr. Rubin. In a post with Bee, he warned people against trying new food without medical supervision. 'You should not be going to another country to try foods if you were prescribed epinephrine because food allergies can be potentially life-threatening.'

Gauze left in abdomen after C-section, hospital faces probe
Ghaziabad: A Nehru Nagar resident has accused a private hospital of negligence after doctors allegedly left a towel-sized gauze in his wife's abdomen during a caesarean section. While a police case is awaited pending an inquiry by a CMO-led panel, complainant Chirag Kataria said the patient experienced severe pain and fever for a month following the June 6 delivery. After she fainted on July 10, subsequent medical tests at a Ghaziabad centre revealed a foreign object in her abdomen. "Diviya underwent a C-section at Om Medical Centre in Ashok Nagar. But ever since she was discharged, my wife had bouts of fever and occasional sharp pain in her chest. On July 10, she fainted at home following a severe stomachache. Kataria submitted a written complaint to the chief medical officer, and a three-member team was set up to investigate the complaint. "We tried to lodge a complaint with the police, but they denied it, saying a CMO report or order is awaited," he added. CMO Ghaziabad Dr Akhilesh Mohan said the committee will probe if there was negligence on the part of the doctor or hospital, and submit a report to higher officials in Meerut. The hospital management and the doctor who performed the C-section did not respond to TOI's repeated calls.

The butter recall for 64,800 lbs (or 1,800 cases) was issued by Bunge North America Inc, which is based out of Chesterfield, Missouri. The product that has been recalled is its European Style Butter Blend 1 lb. The voluntary recall came on July 14, and has now been escalated by the government entity. The company said it was recalling the product because milk was undeclared and not listed on the product label. The lot code number for the butter is 5064036503. Milk is one of the nine food allergens as per the FDA site. Food-related allergies can vary in symptoms ranging from face and lip swelling to vomiting. However, there is also the risk of severe reactions like anaphylaxis, where the immune system could release a 'flood of chemicals' which could make a person go into shock and end up being fatal for them, Mayo Clinic said. As per the FDA, they enforce regulations to avoid such situations and they said there are 'more specific labeling requirements' for foods that can cause allergies and other hypersensitive reactions. What does FDA's Cass II warning mean? As per the FDA site, a Class II recall indicates 'a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote'. They advised people, that if anyone has consumed the product and starts to feel something is not right, they should 'stop eating the food immediately, evaluate the need to use emergency medication (such as epinephrine) and seek medical attention.'
