Carlsbad Caverns officials uncover historic cave trash

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – Carlsbad Caverns say they keep finding trash from decades ago, when they first opened to the public in 1923. Cavern officials say even though they find more and more modern-day trash, sometimes they stumble across historic trash like a Coca-Cola bottle that made it to the top of a rock far off the main corridor trail. What is guano and why was it a hot commodity in Carlsbad? Officials say the shape of this type of bottle is called a 'hobble-skirt,' which Coca-Cola started using in the year 1915. The bottle has the word 'Carlsbad' embossed at the bottom of the bottle, meaning this bottle was fabricated near the cave. This is not the first run-in with trash cavern staff have come across. In September 2024, an empty bag of Cheetos caused an uproar. Cavern officials say this small piece of trash has a big impact on the cavern; it can become a host for algae and mold. Faith, love and support / Tewehtáhkwen, kanoronhkwáhtshera' tánon' kaia'takehnháhtshera'

I recently experienced another loss in my family, Linda Simon. This loss brought back memories of when my brother, Linda's husband, passed away back in March 2014 on a Saturday. I was at Maria's Gas Bar with a friend when I received a call. They told me that my dad was helping my brother pass but was in distress and that my brother needed someone to talk to our dad in our language, to provide support during this difficult time. When I arrived, I immediately began speaking to him in our language, gently rubbing his head and holding his hands. As we talked, my brother's condition began to worsen, and we could see him slipping away. Finally, at 2:30, my brother passed away. With all my heart, I was there to help him on his journey, making sure he didn't face it alone. It's moments like these that remind me of the importance of faith and gratitude towards our Creator. We are never truly alone and we must never forget the presence of our Creator in our lives. This is the way I choose to operate, with faith, love and support for those in need. * Ken' nahè:'a ó:ia' tseià:ta tsontia'tóntion akhwá:tsire', Linda Simon.
