Purton backs up record-breaking night with brilliant Sha Tin four-timer

Fresh from his record-breaking achievement on Wednesday night, Zac Purton continued his stunning momentum with a Class Two double and a superb debut winner highlighting the champion jockey's four-timer at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Four days after surging past Douglas Whyte's all-time record for Hong Kong wins by a jockey, it was business as usual for Purton as he rocketed to 78 wins this season after booting home Sunlight Power, Magnifique, Yuen Long Elite and Gorgeous Win.
The Australian star bagged the two strongest races on the card, guiding Sunlight Power to victory in the Class Two Paris 2024 Paralympic Games Hong Kong, China Team Celebration Cup (1,600m) before capping his four-timer on Gorgeous Win in the Class Two Para Equestrian Handicap (1,200m).
Luckless in recent runs, Ricky Yiu Poon-fai's Sunlight Power atoned with a strong one-and-a-half-length triumph to justify his red-hot $1.45 quote.
'He had the right weight in this race, he drew the right barrier [one], he got a charmed run the whole way and because he had the fence he was quite comfortable to ride,' Purton said after Sunlight Power settled midfield on the fence before coming off the inside early in the straight to launch his winning run.
'He can normally hang in and do a few things wrong, but he gave me a great ride and he did everything right and did a good job.'
Once Purton gained clear running, Sunlight Power charged past The Golden Scenery to hit the front at the 250m en route to a comfortable success.
Yellowfin made good ground from last down the outside to grab second, narrowly ahead of Karma. Voyage Samurai, who was rated Sunlight Power's biggest threat at $4.1, led and faded to run a disappointing seventh.
Sunlight Power was Purton and Yiu's first win together in 364 days. While Purton notched the first of his record-breaking Hong Kong wins on Yiu's Elfhelm in 2007, the jockey and trainer have been an infrequent combination, teaming up just six times this term.
Purton's victory on Gorgeous Win was far less comfortable, with Danny Shum Chap-shing's consistent galloper closing a big margin to record a last-gasp success as the $1.5 favourite.
Trailing a hot speed in second last position, Gorgeous Win was about eight lengths off the leader Baby Crystal at the 400m and still had considerable ground to make up at the 200m.

'I drew awkward [barrier seven] and a few horses were sort of out of position early, so I just had to let him find his rhythm and come into it when he was ready,' Purton said after notching his fifth win from seven rides on Gorgeous Win.
Magnifique backed up his unbeaten record from three trials with a stylish win on debut, claiming the Class Four Para Athletics Handicap (1,000m) by a length from Enjoy Golf.
'Before the race, everyone said it's an ordinary race and there's nothing to beat and then you go off the $2 favourite,' Magnifique's trainer David Hall said.
'But in reality, to go down the straight on your first start as a three-year-old against some of those older, more seasoned horses isn't easy.
'Zac said he travelled stronger than he would have liked and it's pretty hard to find after travelling that strongly, so he did a good job to keep going and get it done.
'He's not just an out-and-out 1,000m speed horse and I think he'll be able to go around the bend over 1,200m and hopefully he'll keep on improving.
'[Owner] Kirk [Wong King-wai] picked him out at the Ready to Run Sale and he didn't have a trainer. I've had a long history with the family and I had Absolute Champion for his father many moons ago.'
Manfred Man Ka-leung's Yuen Long Elite was Purton's biggest winner of the day, saluting by three lengths in the Class Four Para Badminton Handicap (1,400m).

Photos: Kenneth Chan Fresh off wrapping up his eighth jockeys' premiership, Zac Purton has the chance to put an exclamation mark on his season with another stacked book of rides including the rampant Patch Of Stars in the Class Three Chairmen's Day Handicap (1,400m) at Sha Tin on Saturday. The Manfred Man Ka-leung-trained three-year-old has gone from strength to strength in his past three runs, beginning his sequence with Purton on for the first time at Sha Tin back in April. He doubled up in Class Four company with a devastating performance two weeks later, bursting clear at the 300m pole before easing down soon after for a comfortable success. Up to Class Three company in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarships Handicap (1,400m) on his most recent start, he once again won with any amount in hand, cruising to the front after a midfield trip to win on the bridle. 'He's lightly raced and has really come to hand in the last few months. I think he's been in a couple of races where the tempo has really suited him – his achillies heel is the fact he wants to get on with it,' said Purton. 'He's been in two races where the tempo has been good and he's relaxed really well, so he's managed to show his best. He's still learning his trade and hopefully he's learned to relax and chill a bit better than what he was doing earlier in his career. 'If he can get into a nice rhythm and help himself, he's going the right way and it will be nice to see what he can do next season as well.' Purton also rides another bang-in-form horse in the shape of Masterofmyuniverse, who goes for a hat-trick in the Class Two Philip Chen Trophy (1,200m). The Havana Gold galloper has been a rapid riser for John Size, making his debut off a measly rating of 52 at Happy Valley last November. He has won four times at Sha Tin from nine career starts, most recently in a pair of Class Three races over the 1,200m distance. His last success in the Class Three Tai Wai Handicap (1,200m) was a gutsy effort, coming from a long way back and weaving between horses to nab Infinite Resolve in the final stride under an ice-cold Purton The four-year-old is up in grade from a tricky draw, but Purton remains hopeful of a big run with more progress a possibility. Masterofmyuniverse (inside) lashes home to win again at Sha Tin. 'He's just kept improving, as a lot of John Size's horses tend to do,' said Purton. 'He's up in grade now and is drawn a bit awkward, so it's going to be a bit more of a task for him. 'That said, he's going well and should acquit himself well. I'm not really sure how much is left in terms of improvement.' Meanwhile, Vincent Ho Chak-yiu has been passed fit to ride work and he returned to the saddle at Sha Tin on Friday morning. The 35-year-old has been absent from race riding since suffering a brain contusion and a brain bleed in a horror fall at Sha Tin in February. He is now focusing on training as he looks to return to the saddle competitively next season.

Hat-trick hero Light Years Charm set for Group assignments after clinical Sha Tin win
David Eustace's rising star could head to the Celebration Cup to kick off next season Light Years Charm has Group racing in his future after scything his way through the field to win the Class Two Hong Kong Reunification Cup (1,400m) at Sha Tin on Tuesday. The David Eustace-trained improver always travelled best one from the rear under Zac Purton and despite turning widest of all into the straight, the top jockey was full of both rein and confidence. When unleashed, the Rubick galloper surged into the lead at the 100m pole before holding off a challenge from the equally fast-finishing Mickley to win by a head. On a day when making ground was tricky, the effort can be upgraded and Eustace already has Group racing in his thoughts, though a step up in trip might be on the back burner. 'To come from close to last – the second horse has obviously run very well with no weight – and do it carrying a bit more weight today against what I thought was a very strong field was a really good effort. 'We'll put him away now. It really does look like 1,400m is his trip. I know he gets back and runs on but he doesn't actually really look like he wants a mile. There's really no need to change it now. 'There is [the Group Three Celebration Cup (1,400m)] at the end of September, which looks like the logical kick-off point. We'll hope that he pulls up well, give him a break and plan for next season.' For jockey Purton, it was a straightforward assignment on a horse that is quickly building into a potential star. 'It was pretty straightforward. He got out of the gates OK for him and he was in a lovely rhythm the whole race, handled the ground really well and he was just able to come into it with a nice-timed run,' Purton said. 'He had to stave off the challenger the last 100m. He did a really good job to keep sticking his head out. 'David has done an exceptionally good job with him to bring him this far in his first season and they did a good job to find him – he came out of Lismore. It was well spotted by the agents.' Unsurprisingly, it completed another double for champion jockey Purton, who kicked off the card with victory on Gold Tack in the Class Five Racing Goes On Handicap (1,800m). Off the turn, Purton asked the $6.8 shot to extend and his partner duly obliged, quickly spurting into the lead and holding off the fast-charging Mr Aladdin by half a length. 'He's had a couple of good runs recently and has been very consistent, so it was just a matter of time before he was going to get the win – at his 30th attempt it seems like waiting forever,' said Hall. 'He's a pretty limited little horse but he's had six seconds so it's nice to see him get the win. He had colic surgery at the end of last season and he pulled through that really well, so it's great for the owners – who had the patience to wait – to get a deserved win.'
