Tanner Houck preparing for the long rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery

Tanner Houck had an 8.04 earned run average in nine starts for the Red Sox this season.

Houck had non-surgical alternatives available, including platelet-rich plasma and stem-cell treatment, to try to fix his arm. But those would have merely been 'delaying the inevitable,' he said, so he opted for the operation.

'This was the decision that I made, just for longevity of the career,' Houck, 29, said Sunday. 'I want to pitch for another 10 years, 10-plus years. Looking at it from a longevity standpoint, this is the road we decided to take.

'It's about trusting the day-to-day work. It's going to be long. It's going to be hard. But I'm ready for it. I've made peace with it myself. I had a lot of long conversations with my wife — early mornings, late nights talking about it.'
Already, he has sought advice from his peers.
'They all said the same thing: You'll come back better from this,' he said. 'I'm ready to get it going.'
Houck this week will go to the Dallas area, where Dr.
Keith Meister
will do the surgery. The rehab will be 12-14 months minimum, making Houck questionable to take the mound in 2026.

That marks the end of a lost year for Houck, who had an 8.04 ERA in nine starts. In mid-May, he landed on the injured list with a right flexor pronator strain in the forearm, which sometimes is a prelude to UCL issues.
Houck sat out awhile, went on a rehab assignment, struggled, started to pitch better, and seemingly was on the brink of a return. But over the All-Star break, two months into his IL stint, he encountered more problems — in his hand and his tricep.
The Sox sent him for another MRI, which showed significantly worse damage in his forearm/elbow — much worse than the inflammation from the previous test.
Red Sox chief baseball officer
Craig Breslow
said it is hard to know whether the beginnings of the injury were what caused Houck problems when he pitched early in the season.
'A little bit surprised [with this outcome], just because it seemed like he was making progress through the rehab process,' Breslow said. 'It felt like we were turning the corner … It felt like we needed to make sure there was nothing we were missing. It turns out there was something pretty significant going on.'
A year removed from being an All-Star, Houck is relegated to observer. He called it 'just a little time away.'
'It's unfortunate. It sucks,' he said. 'It's a fun team to watch, it's a fun team to be around. Just knowing I'm not going to be a part of it for the rest of the year is hard.'

Setback for Sandoval
One instance of a Tommy John rehab not going so smoothly:
Patrick Sandoval
.
Breslow said he does not expect Sandoval, who had surgery last summer, to pitch this season following a recent setback. Sandoval for now isn't throwing at all, though the Sox want him to fully ramp up and face batters before he goes into the offseason.
'Nothing out of the ordinary for a Tommy John rehab process, just a little bit of a delay as we've seen with a number of guys,' Breslow said.
Similarly, manager
Alex Cora
said he is not confident
Liam Hendriks
(right hip injury) will make it back this season.
Justin Slaten
, working his way back from a nerve issue in his neck/right shoulder, was 'upbeat' Sunday after his first bullpen session Saturday, Cora said.
'Hard to put a timetable on it, just given the topsy-turvy nature of the recovery to date,' Breslow said.
Down the depth chart
In talking up the club's rotation depth, Breslow highlighted prospect
David Sandlin
— a righthander recently promoted to Triple A Worcester — as a candidate to pitch out of the major league bullpen down the stretch.
'Sandlin is a guy who comes to mind,' he said. 'It's really power stuff. Maybe with a simplified approach, he could come in and overwhelm hitters with the stuff. Those conversations are ongoing.'
Sandlin's fastball averaged 95.3 miles per hour and maxed out at 98.1 with Worcester on Friday.
Breslow on Bregman
Breslow declined to comment on the state of
Alex Bregman
contract talks (if they exist). 'It's always great when somebody wants to be here,' he said. 'I think probably best to keep those conversations internal outside of being incredibly appreciative and excited about what he's brought here on the field and also off the field, what he's meant to some of the younger guys. When appropriate, we'll approach that' …
Connor Wong
, 0 for 2 with a sacrifice fly Sunday, will catch again Monday, per Cora. That will be his first time starting consecutive games since May 2-3. 'It's been a while, huh?' Wong said. Cora: 'It's important for his confidence and for his at-bats' …
Kristian Campbell
was out of Worcester's lineup after jamming his right thumb Saturday. Breslow said he is day-to-day … The Red Sox are 3-0 in games that start before noon.

Ime Udoka, Fred VanVleet traveled to Turkey to work with Rockets star Alperen Sengun

With Alperen Sengun spending more time than usual in Turkey in the 2025 offseason, the Rockets sent even more big names there to work with him. All-Star center Alperen Sengun spends at least a portion of each NBA offseason in his native Turkey. He typically still works out and does basketball activities in the gym during that time, but it's an opportunity for the 23-year-old to be surrounded by family and friends from his homeland for at least a few weeks. In the 2025 offseason, however, the Rockets star is spending a bit more time at home due to his inclusion on Turkey's FIBA EuroBasket 2025 squad (which opens play later this month). So, rather than waiting for Sengun to eventually return to his NBA home, Houston is sending its leadership to him. As shown in photos posted on the team's official social media accounts, head coach Ime Udoka and starting point guard Fred VanVleet each recently spent time with Sengun in a Turkish gym. It's nothing too out of the ordinary. In past offseasons, it was typically an assistant coach from the Rockets that went to visit Sengun in Turkey. But with expectations higher than ever after the Kevin Durant trade and Sengun's timeline for returning to the United States delayed due to the EuroBasket competition, the Rockets sent even bigger names to Turkey in 2025. The hope is that it allows Sengun, VanVleet, and the rest of their teammates on the 2025-26 Rockets to hit the ground running when training camps open around October 1. In 2024-25, Sengun averaged 19.1 points and a career-high 10.3 rebounds in earning his first career All-Star honors. Houston went 52-30 and finished at No. 2 in the Western Conference standings, and Sengun led the Rockets in rebounding while finishing second in scoring and assists on a per-game basis. Yankees Slugger Has Blunt Message For Team Amid Losing Stretch

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees have struggled for a few weeks now, and it's starting to become concerning for the Bronx Bombers. The Yankees are a shocking 7-9 in the 16 games following the All-Star break, including the crushing three-game sweep they suffered at the hands of the surging Miami Marlins. The Bronx Bombers have beaten themselves a lot as of late. Their defense has been lackadaisical at times, while they seem to run themselves into at least one or two outs per game. Recently, young slugger Ben Rice sent a strong message to the team, fans and media about the Yankees and their sense of urgency going forward. MIAMI, FLORIDA - AUGUST 03: Trent Grisham #12 celebrates with teammate Ben Rice #22 of the New York Yankees after hitting a home run during the first inning against the Miami Marlins at loanDepot park on August 03, 2025 in Miami, Florida. More"I wouldn't say there's concern, but I would say, I think a little sense of urgency would be good for us going forward," Rice said on Sunday, via YES Network. "Just to continue do what we can to win ballgames. And that's gonna be do all the little things. It's gonna be, hopefully, we sync up pitching and hitting. That's it." The Yankees are in third place in the American League East, sitting 4 1/2 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays at this point. They sit in the second wild-card spot, half a game up of the Seattle Mariners for the third spot. But they're only 2 1/2 games ahead of the Texas Rangers, who are hunting for the wild card. If the Yankees can't right the ship in the coming weeks, there's a chance they're on the outside looking in on the postseason. The good news is that Aaron Judge should be back in the lineup in the near future. Judge's dominance can typically overshadow the smaller mistakes, but the Yankees still need to clean it up. Battle for starting job on 49ers OL is over according to position coach

The San Francisco 49ers have been dealing with multiple injury situations through the early stages of training camp, but one was rectified last week offensive lineman Ben Bartch returned to field after a quadriceps injury that he suffered away from the team's facilities landed him on the active/non-football injury list to start camp. Bartch, 27, played collegiately at Saint John's from 2016-19, earning All-MIAC in his last two seasons before the Jacksonville Jaguars took him in the fourth round (No. 116 overall) of the 2020 NFL draft. He was a starting guard in Jacksonville for two seasons before a knee injury, but he was benched not long after his return and was waived and placed on their practice squad in November 2023. The 49ers signed Bartch a few weeks later and have used him as a backup for most of the last two seasons. With Aaron Banks leaving on a four-year, $77 million deal with the Green Bay Packers in free agency, San Francisco gave Bartch a one-year, $1.34 million extension and were expected to give him an opportunity to compete for the starting job in training camp. While Bartch was sidelined for the first few practices, there was some belief that the veteran may win the job, but offensive line coach Chris Foerster gave him a vote of confidence over the weekend. 'It's Bartch's job to lose, really,' Foerster said on Sunday. 'Nick [Zakelj] had a chance when Ben was hurt early, but Ben came back quick enough that if Nick would have really asserted himself, [he could have] taken the role, but he didn't. He was good, but we still feel Ben gives us the best shot.' Zakelj actually played more offensive snaps in 2024 (162) than Bartch has in two years in San Francisco (93), but he didn't take the leap that Foerster and the 49ers were hoping he would. As long as the group remains healthy, San Francisco's line should be Trent Williams, Bartch, Jake Brendel, Dominick Puni and Colton McKivitz from left to right entering Week 1. They've started seasons with worse units. More 49ers: 49ers sign 30-TD WR, release sixth-year WR to open roster spot
