SINGAPORE - In her 21-year sporting career, Nurulasyiqah Mohd Taha has competed in two Paralympic Games and won medals at the Asian Para Games and Asia and South Pacific Boccia Championships, but individual honours at the World Cup proved elusive.
That finally changed on June 12, when the 39-year-old, who has spinal muscular atrophy, clinched the bronze medal in the BC3 Individual event at the Beijing 2025 World Boccia Cup.
Nurulasyiqah, who beat four higher-ranked opponents enroute to her medal, said in a statement: 'I'm incredibly grateful to my ramp operator and athlete competition partner, Nur Azizah, who has been training with me patiently since 2017. This bronze medal is as much hers as it is mine.
'I haven't had much time to fully process the win, as we had to gear up for our first BC3 Pairs match just a few hours after the individual bronze medal match. Once we return from this tournament, our focus will be on sustaining the skills and momentum we've built.'
Ranked 24th in the world, Nurulasyiqah kicked off her campaign in China with a narrow 4-4 tie break loss to world No. 4 Sonia Heckel, before bouncing back with a 6-1 win over Evani Calado (No. 5) of Brazil to secure a knockout berth.
In the quarter-finals, she beat Australia's world No. 6 and Paris Paralympics silver medallist Jamieson Leeson 5-3 to advance to the top four.
Despite losing 5-1 to South Korea's Paralympics bronze medalist Kang Sun-hee (No. 3) in the semi-finals , she fought back to earn a spot on the podium. Up against Paralympics gold medalist Ho Yuen Kei of Hong Kong in the third-place play-off, the Singaporean upset her top-ranked rival 5-2 to claim a hard-earned bronze .
Kang eventually took home the gold, while Japan's Ayane Ichinoe claimed the silver.
The bronze medal in Beijing marks Nurulasyiqah's comeback to international competitions after a three-year absence due to Covid-19 restrictions. In 2024, she won gold at the Pajulahti World Boccia Challenger in Finland, before clinching the World Cup Pairs bronze at the New Taipei City World Boccia Cup with Aloysius Gan – a first for Singapore at the event.

Gan, 18, missed out on a podium finish in the BC3 male individual event after losing 5-2 to Frenchman Jules Menard in the third-place play-off.
The duo will next feature in the BC3 pairs semi-finals against Brazil on June 14.

Mixed Martial Arts-Topuria knocks out Oliveira to win UFC lightweight title
LAS VEGAS - Spain's Ilia Topuria scored a stunning first-round knockout victory over Charles Oliveira to claim the UFC lightweight title at UFC 317 on Saturday, with Alexandre Pantoja securing a third-round submission win over Kai Kara-France to retain the flyweight title in the co-main event. Former featherweight champ Topuria announced in February that he was going to step up to the 155-pound division to fight for the belt vacated by former champ Islam Makhachev's move up to the welterweight division. Standing between him and the title was 35-year-old Brazilian former lightweight champ Oliveira, who briefly brought his vast experience to bear before being defeated. After a dominant run at featherweight that saw him move to 16-0 as a professional, Topuria, who was born in Germany to Georgian parents, looked small in the cage compared to Oliveira, but he defended well against the Brazilian's grappling before showcasing his striking power. Oliveira, who was stripped of the lightweight belt in May 2022 when he missed weight for a defence against Justin Gaethje, looked good during a brief exchange on the mat, but Topuria disengaged to bring the fight back to the feet, and shortly afterwards Oliveira's evening ended. The 28-year-old stunned Oliveira with a right hook and followed it up with a crunchin left that sent Oliveira crashing to the mat, his eyes glazed as his back hit the canvas as Topuria fulfilled his pre-fight prediction of a first-round knockout win. "I already said it - I represent the new generation of the mix of martial arts, this is the next level of the game. This is the next thing, and this is what I represent," Topuria said in a post-fight interview. "I did exactly what we had planned, lot of jabs, right hand, left hook, and boom - his lights were out." In the co-main event, Brazil's Pantoja dominated New Zealander Kara-France before taking his back and locking in a rear naked choke 1:55 into the third round, REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Brooks Koepka doesn't return after smashing tee marker at LIV Golf event
Brooks Koepka was six-over-par after eight holes at LIV Golf Dallas on June 27 when he vented his frustration. PHOTO: AFP CARROLTON, Texas - After a meltdown and withdrawal in the first round, Brooks Koepka did not return to LIV Golf Dallas in Carrolton, Texas, on June 28. The five-time major winner posted a birdie on his opening hole on June 27, before things went swiftly downhill with a triple-bogey on both the par-4 4th and the par-5 7th. After eight holes, he was already six-over-par. After hitting a tee shot on the par-4 9th, Koepka hammered the tee marker towards the crowd in a show of apparent frustration. He posted a bogey on the 9th then withdrew, citing illness. There were no reports of injuries in the crowd. Koepka could have returned to play this weekend, though per LIV rules, his scores would have counted only towards the team standings. Koepka was replaced by reserve player Luis Carrera for the remainder of the first round. FIELD LEVEL MEDIA Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Fritz beats Brooksby to defend Eastbourne title
Tennis - Eastbourne Open - Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club, Eastbourne, Britain - June 28, 2025 Taylor Fritz of the U.S. celebrates winning the men's singles final against Jenson Brooksby of the U.S. Action Images via Reuters/Paul Childs REUTERS Tennis - Eastbourne Open - Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club, Eastbourne, Britain - June 28, 2025 Taylor Fritz of the U.S. in action during the men's singles final against Jenson Brooksby of the U.S. Action Images via Reuters/Paul Childs REUTERS EASTBOURNE, England - Three-times champion Taylor Fritz came out on top in an all-American decider, beating lucky loser Jenson Brooksby 7-5 6-1 in the Eastbourne Open final on Saturday to retain his title. Fritz has never lost a final at Eastbourne, also beating fellow Americans when winning in 2019 and 2022 and, having been taken to three sets in his three previous matches at this year's edition, the final was a more straightforward affair. "There's something about Eastbourne," said Fritz. "I just love it here. Every year I come here and it's such a good week. This year it's been different and I've had to fight through my matches. I feel like I've really upped my level." The top seed was made to battle in the opening set, with Brooksby breaking first, but Fritz responded immediately and broke a second time to clinch the set. Fritz had little trouble wrapping up the straight-sets win, even with Brooksby forcing two break points with the second set poised at 1-1, but the champion held firm and broke Brooksby's next two service games to win his fourth title. The 27-year-old Fritz will now go to Wimbledon full of optimism, having also won the Stuttgart Open earlier in June, and his tournament begins against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard on Monday. "I'm going to be ready to go. I'd much rather go into the tournament with confidence and a title," Fritz said. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
