Science minister says no AI law for now, but ethics code in place as scammers exploit tech for fraud
He said the ministry had held consultations with industry players regarding the implementation of AIGE, and all parties involved have agreed to adhere to the guidelines.
'There is no clear time frame yet (for an AI law), but that is our eventual goal... so that this guideline (AIGE) can be enforced as law.
'In the meantime, existing laws such as the Communications and Multimedia Act and the Penal Code remain applicable,' he told reporters after officiating the Perak Ignite Entrepreneur Summit 2025 at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Yuk Choy here today.
Previously, the media reported that National Anti-Financial Crime Centre (NFCC) deputy director-general Ahmad Sazilee Abdul Khairi said that scammers are exploiting the rapid advancement of AI technology to make significant profits.
He emphasised the importance of the public staying informed and being vigilant against fraud syndicates using AI-generated content to deceive people.
Launched in September last year, AIGE serves as a foundation should the government decide to introduce legislation on AI-related matters. — Bernama

Respect process of law in probe of Zara Qairina's death, says Home Minister
KAJANG: The public has been urged to respect the process of the law in the investigation of Sabah schoolgirl Zara Qairina Mahathir's death. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the investigation paper (IP) has been completed and referred to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC). They added that Noraidah did not mention the bruises earlier as she was grieving for her child. The lawyers said Noraidah believes that the bruises were caused by blows from a blunt object.

Former store worker charged with RM1.16mil computer chip theft
BALIK PULAU: A former factory store worker was charged at the magistrate's court here today with the theft of computer chips worth RM1.157 million about four months ago. Ruhaizzat Rusol, 33, claimed trial to the charge, which was read to him before magistrate Chia Huey Ting. He is alleged to have stolen five boxes of Xilinx Virtex UltraScale chips containing 180 units valued at RM1.157 million from a locked and fenced storage area at the Jabil Plant 2 building in Bayan Lepas, around 3.30pm on April 26. The charge was framed under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine upon conviction. For a second or subsequent offence, the accused may also face whipping in addition to imprisonment and a fine. Deputy public prosecutor R. Lushani asked the court to set bail at RM10,000 with one surety. "We also request that the accused to surrender his passport to the court, given the high value of the stolen items," she said. National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Edmund Anthony Hermon, who represented Ruhaizzat, told the court that his client was now working as an e-hailing driver. "My client's income is irregular and he is responsible for caring for his mother. "As such, we request the court to grant minimal bail," he said, adding that Ruhaizzat was unmarried. Chia then set bail at RM7,000 with one surety and fixed Sept 25 for document submission and appointment of counsel.
