Will the Broad Street Bullies be back? Flyers go big at the NHL draft

By the time the Philadelphia Flyers are legitimate contenders again a few years down the road, they could have a lineup that makes the 1970s Broad Street Bullies proud.
Five of their eight selections in the NHL draft stand 6-foot-3 or taller, including first-rounders Porter Martone and Jack Nesbitt. They overlooked smaller talent to get a hulking winger in Martone at No. 6 and traded up for Nesbitt, a 6-5 center, with the 12th pick.
'It's a nice bonus that they're both tall and will bring us size, as well,' general manager Daniel Briere said. 'It just kind of worked out that way. It wasn't a plan that we had in mind going into the draft that we wanted to get bigger. It just happened that way.'
Philadelphia's second-rounders were 6-6, 232-pound defenseman Carter Amico and a trio of nice-sized forwards: Jack Murtagh, Shane Vansaghi and Matthew Gard. Murtagh described himself as 'a high-end workhorse.'
Their second fifth-round pick, Luke Vlooswyk, called himself 'a big defensive, defenseman.' He said Gard, a teammate with the Western Hockey League's Red Deer Rebels, is 'a big kid like me.'
Bulking up the prospect pool makes sense for the Flyers, who have a lot of smaller talent in the system, from budding star Matvei Michkov already on the roster to 2024 first-rounder Jett Luchanko, who played four games for them last season. After William Horcoff, whose dad Shawn spent 15 seasons in the NHL, went 24th to Pittsburgh in the first round, Day 2 of the draft was full of the sons and nephews of retired players hearing their names called.
It started with Seattle trading up to get Blake Fiddler, son of Vernon, early in the second round. Eric Nilson, son of Marcus, went a handful of picks later to Anaheim.
There were more familiar names picked in the third round: Artyom Gonchar, nephew of 2009 Stanley Cup champion Sergei Gonchar, to the New York Rangers, and Blake Vanek, son of Thomas, to Ottawa. Italian history

Taken by Buffalo 103rd, Kucharcik is a Czech national but became the fourth player born in Italy to be selected.

Candace Parker did it her way and the Sparks retire the 2-time MVP's jersey
Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — If Candace Parker could put music to her jersey retirement ceremony, it would be 'I Did It My Way,' the Jay-Z remix of Frank Sinatra's hit. Parker's No. 3 Los Angeles Sparks jersey was raised to the rafters of Arena before Sunday's game against the Chicago Sky. After being the No. 1 pick in the 2006 WNBA draft out of Tennessee, Parker had a standout 16-year career, winning championships with three teams — the Sparks, her hometown Sky and Las Vegas. She was MVP of the WNBA Finals for LA in 2016. The 39-year-old Parker is the third Sparks player to have her jersey retired, joining Hall of Famer Lisa Leslie (No. 9) and Penny Toler (No. 11). The five-time All-Star has always had big dreams. 'I mean, what's possible,' Parker said. 'I represent coming from a family that told me I could do and be anything. I'm really proud of that kid. I think I'd do things exactly the same way because it's why I'm sitting here. I made mistakes and took two steps forward and one back, but I was always moving forward.' Parker, who wore an orange outfit as an ode to her college days, walked onto the court during the first timeout and got a standing ovation. Fans were given yellow jerseys that read 'That's our Ace' with the number 3 incorporated into the design. This was the first of two jersey retirement ceremonies for Parker. Chicago will retire her jersey later this summer. 'When I got drafted out here, it's become home,' Parker said. 'I've lived here longer than anywhere else. It's super important to see this jersey in the rafters before any others because my 13 years here were super special. It was ups, downs, wins, losses, heartaches and rewards but it's super special to share that with my teammates and coaches with an organization that bet on me with the first pick in the 2008 WNBA draft. That was a long time ago.' Parker was a two-time WNBA MVP with the Sparks, in 2008 and 2013. She's the franchise's career assists leader with 1,331 and is second in rebounds and points. She averaged 16.9 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists along with 1.6 blocks and 1.3 steals. During her second season, Parker gave birth to a daughter. She returned to practice weeks later, and Lailaa Williams, now 16, was a welcome addition at practices and games throughout Parker's years in LA. 'Candace Parker's impact on the WNBA is immeasurable. From the moment she stepped onto the court as a rookie, winning both MVP and Rookie of the Year in the same season, she has continually redefined greatness,' WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelberg said. Claude Giroux Takes Pay Cut To Sign Extension With His Hometown Ottawa Senators
The Ottawa Senators have completed the finishing touches to signing Claude Giroux to a one-year contract extension. Giroux will earn $2 million in base salary, along with the opportunity to earn a maximum of $4.75 million in additional bonuses. This contract also includes a full no-move clause. Ottawa GM Steve Staios shared what he values most in his latest signing.
