Satheesan ridicules LDF campaign for third term in power

The Hindu06-05-2025
Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan has ridiculed the Left Democratic Front (LDF)'s reported campaign targeting another term for Pinarayi Vijayan as Chief Minister.
He was addressing a protest march on Tuesday (May 6) organised by the Kozhikode District Congress Committee (DCC) to the District Collectorate demanding the resignation of the LDF government, alleging that it is 'neck deep in corruption,'.
Mr. Satheesan said that the LDF's current campaign reminded him of another propaganda by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] in the 1977 Assembly polls. 'There were loud slogans saying E.M.S. Namboodiripad won in 1957 and 1967, and he would again win in 1977. However, when the results came out, the then United Front led by the Congress got 111 out of the 140 seats, which was a record of sorts. So, we don't need to get carried away by this new slogan saying the Pinarayi Vijayan government had won in 2016 and 2021 and it would return to power in 2026 as well,' he said.
The Leader of Opposition also alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mr. Vijayan were 'sailing in the same boat'. 'If you criticise Mr. Modi, you will be labelled an anti-national. Here, if we criticise Mr. Vijayan, we will be called anti-development. But, soon we may be called anti-national because one is copying the textbook of the other,' Mr. Satheesan said. A Minister in the State Cabinet had no qualms in claiming that Gautam Adani was the government's partner in the Vizhinjam project, he added.
Shafi Parambil, MP, who also spoke, said that when the results of the 2026 Assembly elections would be out, Congress would surely have MLAs from the district. K. Praveenkumar, DCC president, among others, was present.

'Goodbye Comrade VS': Kerala Fills The Streets As Achuthanandan Begins His Final Journey

Last Updated: Thousands in Kerala mourned former Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other leaders paid tribute. Kerala declared three days of mourning. The roads of Kerala turned red on Tuesday as thousands lined the national highway, pouring in to bid farewell to former Kerala chief minister and veteran Indian communist leader VS Achuthanandan. Thousands took to the streets to mourn the man who fought his way from the fields and factory floors to the frontlines of India's communist movement. The turnout was staggering. In CPI(M) leader Thomas Isaac's words, 'It has taken eight hours for the cortege to cover just 30 kilometers" indicating that it was not crowd control but the masses refusing to let go. He also posted an image of the sea of people lining the highway, referring to the photo he shared on X showing crowds stretching for miles to pay tribute to Achuthanandan. Beaten and left for dead by colonial police in a pre-Independence workers' protest, he got back up and never stopped fighting. When he finally became Kerala's Chief Minister, the office didn't tame him. He took on land mafias, corruption and even factionalism in his own party. He called things as they were and for that, generations called him simply 'VS". On Tuesday, Kerala gave him a honourable send off. In the morning, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan visited the residence of the late leader to pay his respects. State ministers, including V Sivankutty, and senior CPI(M) leaders also paid tribute. The Kerala government has declared a three-day mourning period starting July 22 as a mark of respect. During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings across the state. All state government offices, educational institutions, public sector units, statutory bodies, and establishments covered under the Negotiable Instruments Act remained closed on Tuesday. In a message shared on social media, Chief Minister Vijayan said Achuthanandan played a key role in Kerala's political history and contributed to movements like the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising. The final rites will be held after the public homage. view comments First Published: July 22, 2025, 23:32 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Congress began collecting signatures to remove Justice Varma last week to deny government ‘sole credit'

The Opposition's decision to move a motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma in the Rajya Sabha was set rolling on July 15 at the Congress Parliamentary Strategy meeting, where the lead Opposition party took a call that the government should not be allowed exclusive ownership of the motion, aimed at uncovering the alleged corruption in the judiciary. Wads of half-burnt currency notes were found at the official residence of Justice Varma in Delhi when a fire broke out there on March 14. At the meeting, according to those aware of the discussion, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader and Rajya Sabha member P. Chidambaram and the party's chief whip in the Rajya Sabha Jairam Ramesh among others felt that Rajya Sabha should not stand as a mute spectator to the process. The government had reached out to all sides for a bipartisan motion to be moved in the Lok Sabha. The Congress then started the process of collecting signatures from the other Opposition parties. 'This process had been going on since Thursday (July 17, 2025) last week,' a senior Congress leader said. Barring the Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party MPs, who were not available for various reasons, other Opposition leaders signed the motion. A total of 63 signatures were collected. The motion was submitted around 2 p.m. to Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar's office, who, around 4 p.m., informed the house about it. He went on to describe the procedure, asking the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha, P.C. Mody, to enquire with the Lok Sabha about the submission of a similar motion and proceed accordingly. In cases where the motion is submitted on the same day in the two Houses, a joint statutory committee is constituted to investigate the matter. A notice for the removal of a judge has to be signed by no fewer than 100 members in the Lok Sabha and 50 in the Rajya Sabha. The three-page motion had signatures from members of the Opposition. It sought Justice Verma's removal on three grounds – 'financial misconduct and lack of transparency', 'unnatural conduct and concealment' and 'breach of public trust and probity', quoting from the Supreme Court's internal committee's report that investigated the incident. It said that the Supreme Court report proved misbehaviour on the part of Justice Varma as defined by Article 124 (4) of the Constitution and thus recommended his removal and further investigations by a statutory committee. At 4.30 p.m., the Business Advisory Committee, which convened minutes after the Chairman's announcement on the floor of the House, Leader of the House J.P. Nadda and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju were missing. When Chairman Mr. Dhankhar enquired about their absence, Union Minister L. Murugan reportedly informed that they had been called away for an urgent meeting. Mr. Dhankhar had articulated both in public and private that the cash recovery at Justice Varma's residence required a thorough probe into where and how the money came from. He was also, till his last day in office, on Monday (July 21, 2025), authenticating the signatures on a motion moved by the Opposition in December last year against the Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Shekhar Yadav for allegedly making a hate speech. On Sunday (July 20, 2025), according to sources, he met Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha and, on Monday (July 20, 2025), Congress MP G.C. Chandrashekhar to get them to authenticate their signatures. He had informed the house on Monday (July 20, 2025) that the process of verification of the signatures is going on. Later, around 5 p.m., he told an Opposition MP that 51 out of the 55 signatures had been authenticated. The motion thus met the minimum required number of members to be accepted.

Congress Denied Tax Exemption Of Rs 199.15 Crore, Tribunal Cites Lapses, Donor Rule Violations

Last Updated: The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal rejected the argument that late returns should be treated like charitable trusts, stressing political parties must strictly file within deadline In a significant legal setback for the Congress, its tax exemption claim for Rs 199.15 crore was denied due to procedural lapses and violation of donation rules. The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) on Tuesday dismissed the appeal made by the Congress and upheld an income‑tax demand of Rs 199.15 crore. It also rejected the party's argument that late returns should be treated like charitable trusts under Section 12A, stressing that political parties must strictly file within the statutory deadline. The ITAT found that the Congress violated two critical conditions under Section 13A, which governs tax exemptions for political parties. It noted that the Congress filed its income tax return on February 2, 2019, missing the mandatory extended deadline of December 31, 2018, as specified under Section 139(4B). The Congress received cash contributions of a total of Rs 14.49 lakh from various donors, with individual donations exceeding the permissible limit of Rs 2,000 under Section 13A provisions. While the party provided donor names and PAN details – mostly from its own elected MLAs and MPs – the tribunal ruled that the cash payment method itself violated the law. The bench, comprising judicial member Satbeer Singh Godara and accountant member M Balaganesh, stated that Section 13A represents a special exemption that must be applied with strict adherence to all conditions, with any breach rendering the entire exemption invalid. The tribunal dismissed an attempt by the Congress to distinguish between 'voluntary contributions" and 'donations," noting that the party itself made no such differentiation in its records or Election Commission filings. Additionally, the ITAT rejected the party's plea that only surplus funds after expenses should be taxed, instead ruling that once Section 13A exemption is denied, all voluntary contributions become taxable income. Beyond the primary tax demand, the tribunal also upheld additional financial penalties including interest charges under sections 234A, 234B, and 234C totaling over R 35 crore, plus a Rs 10,000 fee under Section 234F for delayed filing. This brings the total financial liability to approximately Rs 234 crore, representing a substantial burden for the opposition party. The Congress had previously appealed to the CIT (appeals) but was unsuccessful, with that appeal being dismissed in March 2023.
