12-Year-Old Asks Father To Pay 1 Crore For Custody, Top Court Warns Mother
Hearing a child custody case, Chief Justice of India BR Gavai warned a 12-year-old girl's mother against "spoiling her mind" after the child demanded Rs 1 crore from her father if he wanted her to stay with him. The child, the court noted, also attacked her father with a stick and warned her mother that this would "come back" to her someday.
Senior Advocate PR Patwalia, appearing for the father, told the court that the couple had a matrimonial dispute, after which the district court granted the child's custody to the father. The mother's challenge to the order in the high court is pending, but she has not handed over the child's custody, the lawyer said. The high court rejected the father's contempt case, and he approached the top court.
Mr Patwalia told the bench, also comprising Justice K Vinod Chandran, that in September last year, the Supreme Court asked the district legal services authority to appoint a paralegal volunteer to ensure that the father's visitation rights are implemented. At this point, Chief Justice Gavai recounted that the child had also attacked her father with a stick in the past.
"Now, kindly see what happened yesterday. Only yesterday, again the girl has declined to come with me. And she says that 'you are harassing my mother, you have filed a contempt (case), you please give Rs 1 crore, otherwise I will not go. On top of that, in the school records, the mother has deleted the name of the father," Mr Patwali said. He added that "punishing the mother is not going to achieve anything" and sought mediation in the matter.
When the mother's counsel, Anubha Agrawal, said she was open to mediation, Chief Justice Gavai told the mother, "You are unnecessarily dragging your child, you are spoiling the career of your child, you are spoiling her mind. This will come back someday."
The court eventually referred the matter to a mediator after both sides agreed. "Taking into consideration that the dispute is a matrimonial dispute, we consider it appropriate to refer the parties to mediation. With the consent of parties, we appoint Hon'ble Ms. Justice Ritu Bahri, Former Chief Justice of High Court of Uttarakhand as Mediator. The Mediator shall consider all the issues between the parties," it said.

Jammu ‘shoot-out': J&K Police take suspended policemen to crime site, seize service rifle, victim's bike
Facing an uproar over the killing of a 21-year-old civilian, the J&K Police on Sunday (July 27, 2025) seized the service rifle of one of the two suspended policemen. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) also visited the crime scene to look for clues. Officials said the SIT, headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police-rank officer, visited the site in Satwari where the incident took place on July 24. Several locals who live near the shoot-out site were also questioned and their statements were recorded. The area was also searched for clues like bullet shells etc. Head constable Baljinder Singh and Constable Pawan Singh, who were placed under-suspension pending the inquiry, were also taken to the incident site. Officials said one service rifle was also seized as part of the investigation. The two-wheeler, carrying the victim and his relative on July 24, was also taken into custody. The police also tried to piece together the sequence of events to establish the circumstances under which the youth got killed, officials said. The victim, Mohammad Parvez (21) a resident of Javed Nagar, Nikki Tawi, suffered bullet injuries and died at Surey Chak area in Jammu's Satwari amid conflicting reports. The J&K Police said the policemen were chasing drug peddlers in the area and the victim died in a shoot-out. The family accused the police of 'a fake encounter'. In the face of public protests, the J&K government also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. The Magistrate was directed to 'ensure a fair and impartial examination of the facts and circumstances leading to the incident.' Meanwhile, J&K Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Sunday visited the residence of the victim. He also termed the incident as 'daylight murder by men in civvies'. 'What is this special branch of the police that moves around in civvies and fires at a youth? Is it a special branch or goonda gang? The Senior Superintendent of Police, Jammu, who is in-charge of the special branch, need to answer,' Mr. Choudhary said. He said the J&K Police comes under Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and not the Omar Abdullah government. 'The J&K Police was known for wiping out terrorism and not acting against civilians. The Omar Abdullah government will not accept this,' the Deputy Chief Minister said. Mr. Choudhary also asked the police to fulfil the promises made to the family. 'The police officials describing the youth as a martyr is not sufficient for the family. The promises of Rs. 35 lakhs as compensation and a job to the family member need to be fulfilled soon. We also need to know how and why was the youth killed? It's not an ordinary incident,' he added. The victim belongs to the Gujjar community and the death shook the community who lives in parts of the Jammu region. 'The youth were running an 'akhada' [wrestling ground] to keep local youth away from drugs. The same youth are being accused of drug peddling,' the Deputy Chief Minister said.

PUNE: Former Maharashtra minister Eknath Khadse's son-in-law Pranjal Khewalkar and six others were arrested early Sunday after a police team raided a studio apartment at Kharadi suburb in eastern Pune and allegedly seized cocaine, marijuana, hookah pots, and liquor during an alleged house party. He was taken to Sassoon general hospital for a medical exam along with the others before police searched his Hadapsar bungalow, also in Pune. Officers seized a laptop, three pen drives, and a hard disk from the premises. "Our crime branch team reached the flat following a tip-off and detained seven people, including Khewalkar," police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said. "They were found partying. Cocaine (2.5g), marijuana (70g), hookah flavours, and multiple liquor bottles were seized." Khewalkar had booked three suites in the studio apartment for three days, police said. "He paid for the rooms. Three other women were supposed to join but left when the raid began," said DCP (crime) Manoj Pingale. "The group knows each other from a party circle." Lawyer Sachin Zalte, appearing for Yadav, said police failed to specify the amount of cocaine seized from each accused. "Possession below two grams is a bailable offence under law." The court said these allegations could be taken up in future hearings.

Techie loses Rs 1 crore in online trading fraud
Pune: A 35-year-old software engineer from Wakad lost Rs 1 crore to cybercrooks in share trading fraud between April and June this year. The victim lodged a complaint on Saturday with the Pimpri Chinchwad cyber police. Senior inspector Ravikirnan Nale of the Pimpri Chinchwad cyber police, who is investigating the case, told TOI that cybercrooks added the techie to a group of investors in April this year. "They provided him with details about the stock market and offered good profits on his investments in stocks through them. The crooks also sent the victim a link to download their firm's app to make investments and monitor the profit," Nale said. "The techie could see a profit of Rs 4 crore on his investments in the app. However, when he tried to withdraw his money, the crooks took additional money from him by citing various reasons," the officer said. "When he started pursuing the suspects for his money, they deleted the app. After realising that he was duped, the techie lodged a complaint," he said. Nale said the techie not only exhausted his entire savings but also obtained a personal loan from the bank and transferred it to the crooks to earn more profit. "We have sought the details of these bank accounts," Nale said.
