Pentagon pushes Japan and Australia for clarity on Taiwan defense roles amid China tensions
Elbridge Colby, the US under-secretary of defence for policy, has been pushing the matter during recent talks with defence officials of both countries, the report said, citing people familiar with the discussions.
According to the newspaper, the reported request caught both Tokyo and Canberra off guard, as the US itself does not offer a blank cheque guarantee to defend Taiwan.
Reuters could not verify the report. The US department of defence did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The US is Taiwan's most important arms supplier, despite a lack of formal diplomatic ties. Taiwan has faced increased military pressure from China, including several rounds of war games, as Beijing seeks to assert its sovereignty claims over the island. Taiwan rejects China's assertion of sovereignty.
Colby was deputy assistant secretary of defence for strategy and force development during President Donald Trump's first term. Colby is known for arguing that the US military should prioritise competition with China and shift its focus from the Middle East and Europe. — Reuters

PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said the report from the 19 party divisions in Johor will be studied to determine if the nine MPs had violated party rules. PETALING JAYA : PKR is looking into calls to take disciplinary action against nine of its MPs over their press conference to demand the establishment of a royal commission of inquiry into judicial appointments and alleged interference in the judiciary. Its secretary-general, Fuziah Salleh, said calls for the nine to be temporarily suspended for their actions would also be looked into, Bernama reported. She said the feedback from various party divisions would be tabled at the central leadership council meeting scheduled to be held in two weeks. 'I am aware of the report by the divisions. So for now, the secretary-general's office will look into it and decide on any further action to be taken,' she was quoted as saying. According to Fuziah, the report would be studied as per the party's code of ethics to determine whether the nine MPs had violated party rules. 'I am just carrying out my duty. The central leadership council will discuss the matter and make a decision. We have a code of ethics, so it needs to be studied whether their actions violated it or not,' she said. On Friday, 19 PKR divisions in Johor called for Rafizi Ramli and eight other PKR MPs to be suspended after the group called for the establishment of an RCI, and a hearing by the parliamentary select committee following delays in the appointment of top judicial positions, which they said amounted to a constitutional crisis. The division chiefs said the MPs' actions not only breached party discipline and ethics, but also cast a negative light on the prime minister's leadership and opened the door to political manipulation by rivals.

Violent clashes erupt between far-right groups and migrants in Spanish town
MADRID: Violent clashes erupted between far-right groups, local residents and North African migrants in a town in southeastern Spain late on Saturday following an attack on an elderly man by unknown assailants earlier in the week. Five people were hurt and one was arrested during the unrest in Torre-Pacheco, local officials told Reuters, in one of the worst such episodes in the country in recent decades. The town was quieter on Sunday, but government sources said more arrests were expected. Videos posted on social media showed men dressed in clothes bearing far-right symbols and migrants carrying Moroccan flags hurling objects at each other in Saturday night's violence, which followed several days of lower intensity unrest. Tensions flared up between local residents and migrants after the elderly man was attacked in the street on Wednesday, causing injuries from which he is recovering at home. The reasons behind the assault are unclear and no one has been arrested. The central government's representative in the area, Mariola Guevara, told Spanish public TV the attack was being investigated. She also denounced "hate speech" and "incitement to violence," as far-right groups moved into the town, and said additional Guardia Civil officers would be deployed to deal with the violence. Nearly a third of Torre-Pacheco's population is of foreign origin, according to local government data. The area surrounding the town, which is located in the Murcia region, also hosts large numbers of migrants who work as day labourers in agriculture, one of the pillars of the regional economy.
