Rory McIlroy's odds drift as clear favourite emerges for US Open
The Northern Irishman has struggled for form since winning the Masters back in April and finished way off the pace at last month's PGA Championship.
That event was won by Scottie Scheffler who is the clear favourite with Betfair to win his first US Open title and his third major in total at Oakmont this week. Scheffler is in the form of his life and followed up his PGA win with a fantastic victory at the Memorial Championship.
Just behind Scheffler in the bookmakers' pecking order is defending champion Bryson DeChambeau. The American has twice won the US Open in his career, memorably pipping McIlroy in an epic encounter last year.
Betfair spokesman Sam Rosbottom said: 'The third Major of the year is already upon us, with the world's best arriving at Oakmont Country Club hoping to beat Scottie Scheffler. The American won the USPGA Championship last month and is 11/4 favourite to back up that triumph.
'Having appeared to be suffering somewhat of a dip with his performance following his Masters win in April, Rory McIlroy was way back in the field at Quail Hollow and has been given a 12/1 chance of bouncing back here.
'The last time the US Open was held at Oakmont Country Club in 2016, Dustin Johnson won the tournament and he is 125/1 to repeat the feat this weekend. Shane Lowry was a runner-up on that occasion and is 40/1 to win this weekend.'
Betfair - US Open odds
Scottie Scheffler - 11/4
Bryson DeChambeau - 7/1
Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy - 12/1
Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Aberg - 22/1
Collin Morikawa - 25/1
Joaquin Niemann - 30/1
Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry - 40/1
Sepp Straka, Patrick Cantlay - 45/1
Brooks Koepka, Viktor Hovland, Corey Conners, Tyrell Hatton - 55/1
BAR - 60/1

Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler land HUGE cash windfall without swinging a club ahead of PGA Tour FedEx Cup Playoffs
Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler raked in $28m without swinging a club at the Wyndham Championship COM-CASH Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler land HUGE cash windfall without swinging a club ahead of PGA Tour FedEx Cup Playoffs FIVE-TIME major winner Rory McIlroy didn't swing a club at the Wyndham Championship. But the Holywood hotshot still walked away with a cool $10 million. 2 Scottie Scheffler landed top prize in the Top 10 Comcast and revamped FedEx Cup regular season payouts 2 Rory McIlroy landed in second place on the ladder - and pocket a cool ten million bucks While all eyes were on the final putts dropping at Sedgefield Country Club as players at the Wyndham Championship on Sunday night - it was Scottie Scheffler - and McIlroy - laughing all the way to the bank thanks to the restructured FedExCup bonus payouts. Cam Young claimed his first tour win in the last qualifying event on Sunday evening before this week's playoffs begin at the St Jude Classic. Scheffler, who skipped the event entirely, clinched the regular season No.1 spot, banking $18 million without striking a shot. The world number one banked $8 million from topping the Comcast Business Tour Top 10 and another $10 million from the revamped FedExCup bonus pool. McIlroy, meanwhile, held firm in second place on the points list and was the only other player to earn an eight-figure payday on Sunday after also opting to sit out the Wyndham Championship. The Northern Irishman bagged a tidy $10 million for finishing runner-up in the regular season standings. Previously, all $100 million in FedExCup bonuses were handed out based on final finishes at the Tour Championship. But with the PGA Tour scrapping 'Starting Strokes' in favour of a traditional 72-hole stroke-play event at East Lake this year, the cash is now being dished out across three key checkpoints. McIlroy is also well on course for another lucrative bump. That's if he holds on to second place on the points ladder after the BMW Championship in two weeks. Shocking moment drunk passenger, 29, steals airport golf cart and goes on bizarre rampaging joyride through terminal Down ace McIlroy would pocket a further $3 million before heading to the Tour Championship, where a clean win could be worth another $10 million on top. The PGA Tour's Playoffs get underway this week with the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. But McIlroy bizarrely is not playing in the event due to unknown reason. A $20 million prize purse is on the line as the top 70 players from the season-long FedEx Cup standings. World No.1 Scottie Scheffler leads the betting as the red-hot favourite, while Japan's Hideki Matsuyama returns as defending champion. A cool $3.6 million is up for grabs for whoever comes out on top on Sunday. All the action is live on Sky Sports Golf from Thursday. FULL COMCAST AND REGULAR SEASON PAYOUTS

Shane Lowry returns for FedEx Cup Playoff opener as Rory McIlroy bizarrely skips $20m St Jude Classic
The action gets underway on Thursday with the field set after last night's final chance for players to break into the top 70 on the ladder OFFALY ace Shane Lowry will tee off this week in the first leg of the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs at the $20 million St. Jude Championship. But pal Rory McIlroy sensationally wasn't on the entrant list for the Memphis event last Friday. Advertisement 2 Shane Lowry will return for the first time since The Open at the FedEx Cup Playoffs 2 But Rory McIlroy will NOT take part in the opening FedEx Cup Playoff event this week The five-time major winner faced some online fan backlash after news of his decision. The FedEx Playoff opener in Memphis is supposed to feature the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings. Cam Young claimed his first tour win in the last qualifying event on Sunday evening before this week's playoffs. But the field for next week's FedEx St Jude Championship has been trimmed to 69 after Rory McIlroy dropped a bombshell by pulling out. Advertisement No reason was given for the Hollywood hotshot's omission from the prestigious event but it may be down to the new format. In previous seasons, the entire $100 million FedExCup bonus pool was distributed based solely on players' final positions at the Tour Championship. But that changed this year after the format at East Lake was reverted to a traditional 72-hole stroke-play event with no starting strokes. Scheffler is already guaranteed to hold the No. 1 spot after the BMW Championship in two weeks, earning him an additional $5 million bonus before even setting foot at the Tour Championship. Advertisement Now, the outright winner will pocket $10 million, regardless of FedExCup ranking. Down ace McIlroy is comfortably through to the last playoff event due to his second place standing on the ladder, while Lowry is 17th. Shocking moment drunk passenger, 29, steals airport golf cart and goes on bizarre rampaging joyride through terminal But it has clearly created more talking points after he also skipped three of the PGA Tour's eight Signature Events, including The Sentry, RBC Heritage, and the Memorial Tournament. That last one even raised eyebrows from Jack Nicklaus, who called McIlroy's no-show at his own event 'a surprise'. Advertisement As for Lowry, who is ranked in the top 20 on the FedEx standings, he will take his place at TPC Southwind knowing a strong week could catapult him up the leaderboard ahead of the BMW Championship and Tour Championship later this month. Only the top 50 qualify for the BMW - with another 20 cut from the Tour Championship finale. Earlier this year, the tour's brass ripped up the FedEx Cup format in major shake-up for 2025. PGA Tour Chiefs scrapped the much-maligned 'Starting Strokes' format in a huge shake-up to the FedEx Cup finale. Advertisement Announced earlier this year, the changes are aimed at making the season-ending showdown simpler for fans and tougher for the world's top golfers. The TOUR Championship will now be a straight 72-hole shootout — with all 30 players starting level on par at East Lake Golf Club.

Young captures long-awaited first PGA Tour win at Wyndham Championship
AMERICAN CAMERON YOUNG seized his first US PGA Tour title on Sunday, firing a two-under par 68 in the final round of the Wyndham Championship for a six-stroke victory over Mac Meissner. It was an emotional win for Young, whose seven career runner-up finishes included the 2022 British Open at St. Andrews. He started the day with a five-stroke lead and after an opening bogey reeled off five straight birdies – a run that included a 26-foot bomb at the third hole. A pair of bogeys at 16 and 17 were immaterial and Young tapped in for a par at the 18th to cap a two-under par 68 that gave him a 22-under total of 258. Advertisement 'I've been waiting for it for awhile,' Young said. 'I never thought I'd really be that emotional about it, but it's the end of my fourth season and I've had my chances. Never quite like this — and I wasn't going to let it get away from me today.' Ireland's Seamus Power finished well down the leaderboard, tied 44th on an overall score of four under par. The win at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, had a little extra resonance for Young, who played college golf at North Carolina's Wake Forest University. He was also hoping the win might catch the eye of US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley with the biennial match play showdown with Europe coming up in September. 'Obviously that team is a goal of many of us,' the world number 44 said. Fellow American Meissner had five birdies in his four-under 66 to take second on 16-under 264. Sweden's Alex Noren and American Mark Hubbard shared third on 265 while US amateur Jackson Koivun shared fifth place with American Chris Kirk and England's Aaron Rai. Sunday's round marked the end of the PGA regular-season with the top 70 on the points list advancing to the playoffs which start next week at the St. Jude Championship. Of the players hoping to play their way in this week, Kirk's finish was enough to move him up from 73rd in the standings to 61st. © AFP
