In a major shake-up of India's ride-hailing industry, homegrown startup Rapido is outpacing global giants like Uber and Ola in user growth, while also achieving profitability — a rare feat in the sector.Founded in 2015 and headquartered in Bengaluru, Rapido has revolutionised urban mobility in India with its low-cost motorcycle taxis and innovative pricing structure. In 2023, the company clocked more app downloads than Uber (21 million) and Ola (19 million), with 33 million installs, according to data analytics firm Appfigures. The startup's distinctive revenue model charges riders as little as ₹20 per trip while allowing drivers to access its platform via a nominal daily subscription — as low as ₹9 — instead of taking a commission per ride. This diverges sharply from the traditional models used by Uber and Ola, who have since introduced similar pricing options for some drivers.'Our business model is built for India — where two-wheelers are the most accessible and widely owned vehicles,' said co-founder Pavan Guntupalli. 'Even in small villages, you'll find a farmer's son with a bike.'Rapido now averages 4.3 million rides per day across motorbikes, autos, and cars — about triple Ola's volume and 40 per cent higher than Uber's, the company claims. This growth has allowed Rapido to reach profitability and fuel its ambition to expand beyond the 250 cities it currently serves, with a potential public listing on the horizon.Backed by $200 million in funding from WestBridge Capital, Nexus Venture Partners, and Prosus, Rapido was last valued at $1.1 billion. Yet, regulatory roadblocks remain. Its bike taxi operations in Karnataka were halted after a court ruling deemed use of personal bikes for commercial services illegal — a ruling now under judicial review. Maharashtra has also imposed bans on non-electric bike taxis.Additionally, the GST implications of zero-commission models are yet to be fully clarified.Despite these hurdles, Rapido is doubling down on customer-centric features, including female-only ride options and safety enhancements like seatbelts in auto rickshaws. 'We're building for Indians, by Indians,' said co-founder Aravind Sanka, underscoring the company's hyper-local approach. With Uber declaring India one of its most strategic markets and launching new features to woo price-conscious consumers, the ride-hailing battle is far from over. But for now, Rapido appears to have taken the lead — and on two wheels.

At 6.7%, Kerala had highest retail inflation rate in June
Representative image NEW DELHI: Kerala recorded the highest retail inflation rate among states and Union territories in June, while Telangana had the lowest rate, the latest inflation data showed. Kerala's inflation rate was 6.7 per cent during June and it has been recording high inflation rates for some time. Punjab was second on the list of high inflation rates at 4.7 per cent, followed by Jammu & Kashmir at 4.4 per cent. Telangana recorded an inflation rate of -0.9 per cent, followed by Andhra Pradesh with no change and Odisha at 0.5 per cent. Of the 22 states and Union territories for which the data was published, 12 states recorded inflation rates below the overall headline inflation rate of 2.1 per cent. "State-wise inflation data now reveal a statistically significant trend of convergence. Specifically, states with higher rates of inflation are now converging faster towards the national average. Apart from many other reasons, we believe one of the big long-term structural benefits of GST implementation has been a gradual reduction in the cascading impact of prices across states. This could be one of the reasons for the gradual convergence in state-wise inflation prints over time," said Soumya Kanti Ghosh, group chief economic adviser at SBI. MNRE invests ₹200 crore in NCPRE at IIT Bombay, pushes for scalable solar innovation
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has provided over ₹200 crore in funding to the National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education (NCPRE) at IIT Bombay over the past 15 years, as part of its efforts to support India's solar R&D ecosystem and the broader 100 GW solar mission, said Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi on Tuesday (July 15, 2025). Interacting with journalists after his visit to the centre, he said that the technological progress achieved at the institute—particularly in Silicon-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cell development—positions India for leadership in next-generation photovoltaics. During his visit, the Minister toured key facilities including the Perovskite Tandem Solar Cell lab, the Silicon Fab, and the Medium Voltage Laboratory. He interacted with researchers and acknowledged the work of IIT-Bombay-incubated startup— Advanced Renewable Tandem-Photovoltaics India (ART-PV India) that has developed a 2-Terminal Monolithic Silicon/CdTe-Perovskite tandem solar cell with a conversion efficiency of 29.8%. 'This is a national milestone and one of the highest performance levels ever achieved in India,' he said. 'NCPRE was launched at IIT Bombay in 2010 with funding from the MNRE to provide R&D and education support for India's ambitious 100 GW solar mission. Till date, MNRE has provided over ₹ 200 crore funding to NCPRE, IIT Bombay, over the last 15 years. MNRE is also supporting ART-PV India with $10 million (₹ 83 crore) for establishing a state-of-the-art pilot manufacturing facility in IIT-B campus, in line with the commitment to nurturing domestic Intellectual Property, and ensuring Indian innovation reaches global markets. MNRE will continue to provide policy and financial support to ensure India's RE sector thrives on innovation and self-reliance,' Mr. Joshi said. 'Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is proud to support NCPRE's pioneering work in high-efficiency, low-cost Silicon-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells, a game-changer for India's solar energy future,' he said. He noted that this technology has the potential to achieve more than 30% efficiency, far surpassing conventional solar panels, making India a global leader in next-gen photovoltaics. 'By investing in such innovations, we are driving down the cost of solar energy, making it more accessible for all Indians. India is not just adopting renewable energy but defining its future—through research in perovskite solar cells, Inverter technology, PV-reliability, green hydrogen, and energy storage,' the Minister said. Through initiatives like the Renewable Energy Research & Technology development (RE-RTD) and R&D funding schemes, MNRE is enabling institutions like NCPRE to accelerate lab-to-market transitions, Mr. Joshi said. 'NCPRE's work exemplifies how public-funded research, when coupled with policy support, can position India as a global clean energy hub,' he added. Mr. Joshi urged the IIT Bombay-ART PV team to commercially demonstrate that Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells are not only scalable but also profitable. 'By making advanced technologies accessible to industry, we will not just be driving efficiency but also building a stronger innovation ecosystem. The Union Cabinet approved the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Scheme just two weeks back, and the budget for Gross Expenditure on Research and Development (GERD), stands at ₹ 1.27 lakh crore,' he said.
