Russell Martin reveals Rangers transfer needs for Celtic challenge as surplus stars told they can leave

Martin wants more new faces but insists he doesn't have to get players out the door before more can arrive at Ibrox
Russell Martin admits he needs more new players to have a squad strong enough to compete with Celtic for the title and in Europe.

Right now, the Rangers boss believes he has a strong first 11 available to him but feels they're still light in certain areas.

He's already signed seven players this summer but revealed there WILL be more.

Martin has also told players who are surplus to requirements to find other clubs, including Turkish defender Ridvan Yilmaz who is on his way out and has been linked with a return to Besiktas.
Martin said: 'We still need more players. We need to strengthen a couple of really key areas.
'Mikey helps us a lot because he gives us something we don't have.
'But I still think there will be players leaving and players joining.
'We have to be willing and open for that change. This club has needed it and we must now be patient during it to make sure we get the right ones in.

'With Ridvan, we've had an honest conversation and he's sizing up his options, there are a couple of clubs interested in him so we'll wait and see what happens.
'I don't think we need players to go out (before getting players in).
'There's a bit of interest in a fair few of them who know that for their careers they probably need to move on to play football.

' But we've still done deals for Mikey and Djeidi Gassama for instance.
'By the end of the window, we definitely can't have them all in here.
'But I don't think it's a case of having to wait or saying we need them to go first.

Ahead of the trip to Motherwell on Saturday, Martin revealed that injured duo Thelo Aasgaard and Hamza Igamane still aren't fit enough to feature.
'Aasgaard and Igamane aren't going to make it.
They aren't serious injuries, just frustrating ones where you have to be patient and make sure we don't re-injure them.'

Martin will face his ex-Norwich team-mate Jens Berthel Askou in the dug-out at Fir Park tonight - and he's determined to get off to a winning start in the league.
He said: 'I know how hard working Jens is and I'm sure he's carried that into his coaching and management.
'He's done a good job in his early career so far.
'I'm looking forward to seeing him but I want to win and it's better to catch up after you've had a win.'

Celtic and Rangers Champions League playoff draw: TV channel, live stream and start time

Scotland's big two have high hopes of reaching the £40million promised land The wait is almost over as Celtic and Rangers gear up to discover their Champions League playoff fate. ‌ Scotland's big two are dreaming of joining the big boys in the £40million playground of Europe's top competition. ‌ As title winners, Celts are seeded via the Champions Path and just two games away from a return to the promised land. ‌ Brendan Rodgers ' side could still face some tricky ties, including clashes against Swiss giants Basel or Austria's top dogs Sturm Graz. Gers, meanwhile, face a more complicated route. The Light Blues must fire overcome Czech cracks Viktoria Plzen in the third qualifying round to keep their qualification hopes alive. But Russell Martin will still be glued to the screen for Monday's all-important draw as his side target a place amongst Europe's elite. When is the Champions League play-off draw? The draw takes place on Monday, August 4 at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland. It gets underway 11am UK time. How can I watch it? TNT Sports 2 will broadcast the draw live from 11am. Fans can also stream it via the Discovery+ website or app for £30.99 per month. There is no pay-per-view option. ‌ Who could Celtic face? As Celtic are seeded, they'll avoid the likes of Bodo/Glimt, Copenhagen, Ferencvaros and Red Star Belgrade. Confirmed potential opponents include: FC Basel (Switzerland) Sturm Graz (Austria) Winners of Kairat (Kazakhstan) or Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia) Winners of Dynamo Kyiv (Ukraine) or Pafos (Cyprus) Winners of Shkendija (North Macedonia) or Qarabag (Azerbaijan) ‌ Who could Rangers face? Rangers must see off Plzen before reaching the playoff draw, where they'd face one of the following League Path winners: Winners of Nice (France) vs Benfica (Portugal) Winners of RB Salzburg (Austria) vs Club Brugge (Belgium) If Gers fall short, they have the safety net of the Europa League group stages. When will the fixtures take place? The first leg will take place on August 19/20, while the return matches a week later on August 26/27.

Russell Martin will be Celtic nemesis or his own worst enemy but either way he runs towards danger

Hugh Keevins likes the new Ibrox boss' style and warns he can pile the pressure on the Hoops before the pair even meet Russell Martin will either turn out to be Celtic 's nemesis or his own worst enemy because of his managerial philosophy. ‌ But before the verdict is delivered, I have to say I like his style. ‌ Don't run away from potential danger. Run towards it and shape your own destiny. Foolhardy or foolproof? Time will tell. ‌ It helps in Europe, of course, when you meet a Greek team who couldn't have kicked doors at Halloween whenever they got a sight of goal. But that's not Russell's problem. And I suspect his team will make light work, home and away, of Viktoria Plzen as well when they face the Czechs in the next Champions League qualifying round. The last Czech to cause Rangers serious discomfort was Lubo Moravcik in a Celtic jersey – and he was a one-off. I said here before Gers met Panathinaikos that I could never recall an Ibrox manager being handed a match of such magnitude before he had even dealt with a domestic game in his new role, as Martin had, to survive. Now, having lived with that burden, Russell has the chance to put an inordinate level of pressure on Celtic, inadvertently and intentionally, before the month is out. If one half of Glasgow makes the Champions League group stage and the other one doesn't, it is the cue for regret and recriminations. ‌ If the one who goes through in Europe then beats the one who dropped down to a lesser competition in the first Old Firm derby of the season then all leave is cancelled in a city as claustrophobic as Glasgow. That's Martin's target to hit or his trauma to deal with if Celtic beat whoever comes out of the hat for them on Monday in the Champions League draw and they are the side to win at Ibrox on August 31. ‌ It was never like this in Southampton, that's for sure. 'We are raring to go': Rothwell excited for Rangers' Premiership opener

Joe Rothwell insists Rangers are 'raring to go' ahead of their Premiership opener against Motherwell at Fir Park on Saturday. The Light Blues progressed to the Champions League third qualifying round against Viktoria Plzen after a 3-1 aggregate win over Panathinaikos in Athens on Wednesday night. Midfielder Rothwell, who joined the club in the summer from Bournemouth, having spent last season on loan at Leeds, is confident Russell Martin's squad have recovered for the start of their league campaign. The 30-year-old said: 'Getting the result we wanted obviously helps and we have had a couple of days to recover now, and we are raring to go. 'It is a bit strange playing European games before the league season has even started, but it has been good. 'It gives us a chance to go out there and put the things we have been working on into practice. 'It becomes real because obviously those are games you need to win and thankfully we managed to do that over the two legs, but now our focus is fully on tomorrow. 'We know as players it is going to be massive and obviously getting off to a winning start is what we want to do. 'It is going to be a fast and erratic start to the games, and it is down to us to take control and build some momentum as quickly as we can. 'Everyone is going to want to beat us, so we want to go out there and put on a real show, but ultimately it is a result-based business, and we are going there to win the game.'
