Rednote joins wave of Chinese firms releasing open-source AI models

Rednote
, one of the country's most popular social media platforms, has released an open-source
large language model
, joining a wave of Chinese tech firms making their artificial intelligence models freely available.
The approach contrasts with many U.S. tech giants like
OpenAI
and Google, which have kept their most advanced models proprietary, though some American firms including Meta have also released open-source models.
Open sourcing allows Chinese companies to demonstrate their technological capabilities, build developer communities and spread influence globally at a time when the US has sought to stymie China's tech progress with export restrictions on advanced semiconductors.
Rednote's model, called dots.llm1, is available for download on developer platform Hugging Face. A company technical paper describing it was uploaded on Friday.
In coding tasks, the model performs comparably to
Alibaba
's Qwen 2.5 series, though it trails more advanced models such as DeepSeek-V3, the technical paper said.
RedNote, also known by its Chinese name Xiaohongshu, is an Instagram-like platform where users share photos, videos, text posts and live streams. The platform gained international attention earlier this year when some U.S. users flocked to the app amid concerns over a potential
TikTok
ban.
The company has invested in large language model development since 2023, not long after OpenAI's release of ChatGPT in late 2022.
It has accelerated its AI efforts in recent months, launching Diandian, an AI-powered search application that helps users find content on Xiaohongshu's main platform.
Other companies that are pursuing an open-source approach include Alibaba which launched
Qwen 3
, an upgraded version of its model in April.
Earlier this year, startup
DeepSeek
released its low-cost R1 model as open-source software, shaking up the global AI industry due to its competitive performance despite being developed at a fraction of the cost of Western rivals.

‘India reserves right to suspend…': Govt retaliates to Trump's auto tariffs, proposes counter duties at WTO
The Indian government has proposed to levy retaliatory duties against the United States under World Trade Organisation (WTO) norms as safeguard measures against American tariffs on the automobile sector. "The proposed suspension of concessions or other obligations would take the form of an increase in tariffs on selected products originating in the United States," PTI quoted a notification of the WTO that has been circulated at the request of India. "India reserves the right to suspend concessions or other obligations", the WTO notification added. The government has informed the WTO's Council for Trade in Goods about its plan to suspend concessions and other obligations under specific provisions of the global trade body.

Donald Trump may impose unilateral tariff rates starting Friday
US President Donald Trump said that his administration may begin sending out letters to trading partners as soon as Friday setting unilateral tariff rates ahead of a July 9 deadline for negotiations. The president on Tuesday said he was not considering delaying next week's deadline.(AFP) 'We're probably going to be sending some letters out, starting probably tomorrow, maybe 10 a day to various countries saying what they're going to pay to do business with the US,' Trump told reporters on Thursday as he left Washington for an event in Iowa. Trump has long threatened that if countries fail to reach deals with the US before next week's deadline, he would simply impose rates on them, raising the stakes for trading partners who have rushed to secure agreements with his administration. The US president initially announced his higher so-called 'reciprocal' tariffs on April 2, but paused those for 90 days to allow countries time to negotiate, putting in place a 10% rate during that interval. So far, the Trump administration has announced deals with the UK and Vietnam and agreed to a truce with China that saw the world's two largest economies ease tit-for-tat tariffs. Asked Thursday if more deals were on the way, Trump responded that 'we have a couple of other deals, but you know, my inclination is to send a letter out and say what tariffs they are going to be paying.' 'It's much easier,' he said. Trump announced the Vietnam deal on Wednesday, saying that the US would place a 20% tariff on Vietnamese exports to the US and a 40% rate on goods deemed transshipped through the nation — a reference to the practice whereby components from China and possibly other nations are routed through third countries on their way to the US. While the rates are lower than the 46% duty Trump imposed on Vietnam initially, they are higher than the universal 10% level.
