South Korean PM says medical students' decision to return to school a ‘big step forward'

The Star2 days ago
SEOUL: South Korea's Prime Minister Kim Min-seok on July 13 described the decision of the country's medical students to return to school, after more than a year of boycotting classes, as a 'big step forward' and a 'relief'.
Medical students had walked out of school in February 2024 to protest a government plan to increase medical school admissions.
Trainee doctors had argued that this plan would lower the quality of medical education, and said more reform was needed to attract doctors into essential care such as emergency or paediatrics instead.
On July 12, protesting students announced that they would return to campus and called on the authorities to normalise academic schedules.
In a Facebook post, Kim said he will make efforts to find a solution to the issue, after President Lee Jae-myung instructed him and the government to find ways to address it.
'What the people want will matter,' he wrote.
The Korean Medical Association, the main group lobbying for doctors, had earlier urged the government to take steps to restore the academic calendar and improve training conditions.
However, a specific timeline for the return was not provided.
'We will place our trust in the government and Parliament and commit to returning to school to help normalise medical education and the healthcare system,' the association said in a statement, which was jointly issued with Parliament's education committee and lobby groups representing medical students.
It also called on the president and the government to form a task force to address long-term reforms in medical education and training, as well as to ensure the participation of all stakeholders, including students. - The Straits Times/ANN

'I will love Malaysia until my last breath'

Malaysia is the only homeland he has ever known. Dr Mahathir PUTRAJAYA – 'I will love this country until my last breath.' That was the heartfelt declaration by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in response to public questions on why he continues to care deeply about Malaysia. Acknowledging those who have asked why he does not simply retire and leave the future to the younger generation, the 100-year-old statesman said his unwavering concern stems from his deep roots in the country. 'This is my country. I was born here. I grew up here and have gained so much from it,' he said in a Facebook post. He stressed that as a Malay Malaysian who has enjoyed a safe and secure life, it would be wrong for him to feel indifferent about the nation's future. 'This country is great. The climate is pleasant, the land is fertile and it is rich in natural resources. 'To me, it has already given so much, and it can offer even more, if we know how to manage it well,' the post read. Dr Mahathir also noted that Malaysia is the only homeland he has ever known. 'I have nowhere else to go. That's why I love this country. I will love it until my last breath,' he said, adding that many people in the world still have no land or nation to call their own. Widely regarded as the Father of Modernisation, Dr Mahathir celebrated his 100th birthday on July 10. More Like This

PSA gets royal assent, says Johari

SEREMBAN: The Parliamentary Services Act 2025 (PSA) has received royal assent from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, paving the way for Parliament to operate as an independent entity, says Tan Sri Johari Abdul. The Dewan Rakyat Speaker said the date of the Act's enforcement will be announced soon by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. 'I was informed by the Dewan Rakyat secretary that His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim has signed the PSA. This means Parliament will now exist as an independent entity. 'Parliament will convene on July 21, and I will be discussing with the minister to set the official date for the enforcement of this Act,' Johari told reporters after opening a youth parliament workshop here yesterday, Bernama reported. The implementation of the PSA will allow Parliament to function without being bound by instructions from the Executive. The original Parliamentary Services Act was introduced in 1963 but was repealed in 1992. 'This Act is the result of strong collaboration between the Opposition and the government, both of which gave it their full support,' he said. On March 5 this year, the Dewan Rakyat passed the Parliamentary Services Bill 2025, granting Parliament autonomy to determine its own policies and governance for the first time in 33 years. The passing of the Bill marked a major milestone in the institutional reform efforts championed by the government. It aims to restore the country's administration through the enactment of legislation that enables Parliament to function as a truly independent and sovereign institution. The original Parliamentary Services Act was introduced in 1963 but was repealed in 1992.
