Company director nabbed for allegedly laundering RM75mil

A source from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission said the suspect, in his 50s, was arrested yesterday evening.
PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has nabbed a company director with the title 'Datuk Wira' for allegedly laundering approximately RM75 million.
A source from the MACC said that the male suspect, in his 50s, was arrested around 4pm yesterday while giving a statement at the anti-graft agency's headquarters in Putrajaya.
'Preliminary investigations suggest that RM75 million was channelled into a company owned by the suspect,' the source said.
The source also said the offence is believed to have occurred in 2012 and is linked to a RM400 million loan for a fibre network development project.
The MACC had launched a special operation codenamed Op Fibre on June 30.
As part of the operation, the anti-graft agency raided four separate locations, including the suspect's residence and office in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
The MACC also froze 12 bank accounts, including personal and corporate accounts, with a combined value of approximately RM400,000.
The MACC's special operations division senior director, Zamri Zainul Abidin, confirmed the arrest and said that the case is being investigated under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin has granted a four-day remand order against the suspect, effective until July 6.

Body with gunshot wounds left at hospital amid robbery probe

CCTV footage showed two persons arriving in a dark-coloured car and leaving the body at Sultanah Aminah Hospital. PETALING JAYA : Police are investigating the discovery of a man's body left at Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru, believed to be linked to an attempted robbery at a petrol station in Gelang Patah. Johor police chief M Kumar said the body, found with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, was dropped off at the hospital early yesterday morning without any identity documents. CCTV footage showed two persons arriving in a dark-coloured car and leaving the body at the hospital. Police are working to identify them. Fingerprint checks identified the victim as a 42-year-old man from Sungai Petani, Kedah, with four prior criminal offences. A post-mortem confirmed he died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen. Preliminary investigations revealed that around 12.10am, a group armed with parangs attacked another group, one of whom had a pistol, at a petrol station in Gelang Patah. The altercation led to shots being fired. Police later arrested two local men and a foreign national, aged between 30 and 40, in Dang Wangi, Kuala Lumpur, at about 7pm yesterday. A Glock 19 pistol, a firearm licence book, bullets, a magazine with six 9mm rounds, a car and spent bullet casings were seized. One suspect is a personal bodyguard, though police are verifying the legality of the firearm involved. All three suspects have been remanded until July 10. Kumar said police are working to determine their connection to the dead man.

Ringgit ends marginally higher on hopes of US tariff compromise

KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit ended marginally higher against the US dollar today, buoyed by growing expectations of a possible compromise on upcoming US tariff measures. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid said the modest rebound was partly driven by optimism that Washington may settle on a softer set of tariffs as it nears the finalisation of tariffs for selected countries. 'There is speculation that the finalised tariffs could be less severe than the initial proposals announced in early April, which has helped ease some market concerns. 'The ringgit was weaker earlier in the session, slipping to RM4.2383, but later recovered to as high as RM4.2175 during today's session,' he told Bernama. Nonetheless, Afzanizam noted that overall sentiment remained cautious, with investors staying on the sidelines as they await greater clarity on trade policy directions and their broader implications. At 6pm, the local currency appreciated to 4.2180/4.2260 against the greenback from yesterday's close of 4.2195/4.2255. At the close, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the euro to 4.9675/4.9770 from 4.9756/4.9827, appreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9225/2.9282 from 2.9333/2.9376, and advanced versus the British pound to 5.7601/5.7710 from 5.7621/5.7703 yesterday. The local currency traded mixed against its Asean counterparts. It improved vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3114/3.3182 from 3.3146/3.3196, and rose against the Philippine peso to 7.47/7.49 from 7.50/7.51. However, it slipped against the Thai baht to 13.0302/13.0609 from 13.0211/13.0457, and slipped against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.6/261.2 from 260.5/261.0 previously.
