TDAP approves Pakistan's strategic export initiatives, restructuring plans

Business Recorder19 hours ago
ISLAMABAD: The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) Board approved Strategic Export Initiatives and Restructuring Plans aimed at enhancing export competitiveness and improving trade facilitation.
The 12th board meeting of the TDAP was held under the chairmanship of the Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan.
The meeting was attended by senior government officials and members of the TDAP Board.
During the session, the board reviewed and approved several strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing Pakistan's export competitiveness and improving trade facilitation.
Key approvals included the Annual Business Plan for the financial year 2025-26; Participation in over a hundred and twenty international exhibitions; Made in Pakistan Exhibitions in Ethiopia and Bangladesh; National Exhibitions; Seminars on export promotion, and National Export Training programmes across Pakistan.
As part of its efforts to strengthen regional trade infrastructure, the board approved the establishment of display centres, conference rooms, and IT accelerators at TDAP's regional offices in Quetta and Sialkot, with dedicated facilities for sports goods and surgical instruments in Sialkot.
The board also endorsed measures to promote greater participation of women entrepreneurs in international trade exhibitions.
The Minister for Commerce stressed the importance of shifting Pakistan's export focus toward emerging international markets instead of relying solely on traditional destinations.
This approach would help diversify export avenues and reduce dependency on limited regions.
The minister also proposed the induction of dedicated researchers within TDAP to conduct sector-specific studies and provide data-driven insights. This, he said, would strengthen the authority's planning and policy support capabilities. While acknowledging the need for improvements, the minister appreciated the ongoing efforts to restructure TDAP and transform it into a more export-oriented institution, aligned with the dynamic needs of global trade.

Pindi City and Cantt Circles: IESCO installs over 884,000 AMI meters

ISLAMABAD: Syed Mohsin Raza Gilani, project director of IESCO's Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), has announced the successful installation of over 884,000 AMI meters in Rawalpindi City and Cantt Circles. This milestone marks a significant step in IESCO's ongoing efforts to modernise its power distribution system. Talking to Business Recorder, Gilani emphasised IESCO's commitment to adopting innovative, customer-centric technologies in the power sector, aimed at providing timely and high-quality services to its consumers. The newly-installed AMI meters —designed to ensure 100 percent accurate and timely readings—represent a transformative shift towards greater operational transparency and improved customer service. The installation drive is progressing rapidly, with 97 per cent of connections with a load of 41 kW or more across the IESCO region now equipped with AMI meters. These smart meters offer several key benefits, including: (i) automated complaint registration;(ii) real-time monitoring of electricity consumption; (iii) reduction in line losses; (iv) detection and prevention of electricity theft; and (iv) improved bill recovery rates Additionally, the system is expected to help reduce transformer overloading and enhance the overall stability of the distribution network. 'This project is a game-changer for the power sector,' Gilani stated. 'It is designed to boost system efficiency and foster a stronger, more transparent relationship between IESCO and its consumers.' While the current focus is on Rawalpindi City and Cantt Circles, the AMI rollout is set to expand across the entire IESCO region, setting a new benchmark for service excellence in Pakistan's power sector. Riyadh displeased with ‘issues' encountered by Al-Jomaih in KE

ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia has reportedly conveyed its serious annoyance to the government over the issues being faced by M/s Al-Jomaih in K-Electric, sources told Business Recorder. Sharing the details, Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) has informed the concerned authorities that the ongoing delays have deeply disappointed Saudi officials. Prime Minister Sharif had assured resolution within a month during a meeting in October 2024—an assurance still unfulfilled. In light of these concerns, Pakistan's Ambassador in Riyadh met with Saudi Assistant Minister of Investment Ibrahim Al-Mubarak on June 24, 2025. The meeting followed a virtual dialogue held on June 16, 2025, aimed at addressing Al-Jomaih's grievances. Disclosures made to PSX: row deepens among indirect KE shareholders Islamabad has also been informed that Al-Mubarak stressed that further delays are damaging Pakistan's investment credibility and could impact future Saudi commitments. He warned that unresolved issues could increase Pakistan's investment risk profile, elevate insurance costs, and reduce projected returns. He added that Al-Jomaih holds significant influence in the Saudi investment community, and any negative experience could deter others from entering the Pakistani market. He also mentioned that 34 B2B Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed in October 2024 between Saudi and Pakistani companies—several of which are now under reconsideration due to the ongoing dispute. In response, Pakistan's Ambassador reassured the Saudi side that internal consultations are underway and a follow-up meeting is expected by mid-July. He emphasized that Deputy Prime Minister Dar is personally leading the matter, citing the recent resolution of Makhdoom Logistics' case as a sign of progress, the sources added. However, Saudi officials made it clear that a concrete resolution must precede Minister Musadik Malik's planned visit to the Kingdom. While reaffirming Saudi Arabia's interest in Pakistani sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, energy, and mining, Al-Mubarak warned that persistent delays could derail future investments.
