
Laterite stone truckers fear loan default amid supply crunch
Most trucks were bought with bank loans, and owners now fear loan defaults and vehicle seizure.
Ravi Rai Pajeer, a truck owner, said that hundreds of truck owners and workers will become paupers if the crisis continues. "The majority of the truck owners bought the vehicles availing loans from private finance companies. After working for many years in the laterite stone quarries, they bought trucks availing loans to the tune of Rs 8 to Rs 10 lakh for each vehicle.
They must pay an average of more than Rs 35,000 per year as insurance for the truck, in addition to road tax of about Rs 3,000 for every three months.
Since the laterite quarrying has been completely stopped, trucks are remaining idle in sheds, and this leads to damages to the battery, tyres, and other spare parts," he said.
While finance companies charge nearly 15% interest on loans, many have not paid loans in the past two months.

The finance company will seize the trucks after three months of loan default, he said. At least five to six labourers depend on one laterite stone truck for their livelihood. They have already started expressing their helplessness to keep the pot boiling in their homes and to pay school fees for their children, he added.
Sathish Acharya, president of the Federation of Laterite Stone Quarry Owners, said that the district has more than 1,000 trucks that were transporting laterite stones.
"Sand supply has stopped completely in Dakshina Kannada, and there is no transportation from Kerala too. Though there is a huge demand in the district, supply has been stopped, affecting hundreds of families dependent on it," he said.
Stating that the increased royalty of Rs 282 per ton of laterite stone in Karnataka is a major issue. In Kerala, the royalty for each ton is just Rs 32. A truck owner must pay Rs 2,820 to transport 10 tons of stones.
As many as 257 individuals obtained 3A permits to quarry laterite stones in the district two years ago. At present, only about four persons have the permits, and the process of fresh permit issue was stopped about six months ago, he said.
"We demand the govt to reduce the royalty and relax rules to allow laterite stone quarrying legally. Stakeholders in the construction industry have been discussing launching a series of protests and dharna if the govt fails to solve the crisis," he said, adding that there is no relief even after the issue was discussed at a meeting chaired by district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao and assembly speaker UT Khader in Bengaluru.

Coimbatore: Contract sanitary workers on Saturday accused the city corporation of deceiving them by promising to hike their wages to around Rs681 per day from around Rs560, with effect from May 1, 2025. The temporary workers said it was following a protest in April that the city corporation agreed to pay them around Rs681 per day. "The civic body said the gross salary it could offer was Rs20,454 per month. Officials told us that the revised salary will come into effect from May 1. But in May, those of us who worked for the entire month without taking any leave were paid only around Rs16,000 after deductions. It looks like the civic body is deducting both the employee's and employer's contributions to the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) scheme and the provident fund (PF) from our salaries. If it does so, it's unfair," said one of the contract workers, who didn't want to be named. After receiving the salary for the month of May, more than 2,000 contract sanitary workers had taken out nearly a week-long protest in the first week of June, seeking the revised wage. Commenting on the salary mentioned in the payslip, Tamil Nadu Selvam, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Annal Ambedkar Scavengers General Employees Union, said the city corporation was deceiving the contract sanitary workers. Visakhapatnam: The erstwhile combined Visakhapatnam district has undergone a dramatic transformation in its land use and land cover (LULC) over the past two decades, with rapid urbanisation and industrial expansion reshaping its landscape between 2000 and 2023. A recent analysis by researchers from Vignan's Institute of Information Technology, Visakhapatnam, using supervised classification through ArcGIS, reveals significant shifts in key land categories. In 2000, Visakhapatnam exhibited a relatively balanced LULC distribution. Agricultural land dominated, covering 37.42% of the area, followed closely by forest vegetation at 35.10%. Barren lands occupied 16.5%, while built-up areas stood at 7.98%. Water bodies and industrial areas made up smaller proportions at 1.68% and 1.29% respectively. By 2023, the urban fabric had visibly intensified. The built-up area surged to 18.7%, marking an 11.92% increase tied directly to population growth and the expanding demand for housing, commercial zones, and transport infrastructure. Start flights from Navi Mum airport by end of Sept: CM
Navi Mumbai/Pune: Stating that 94% of the work on the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) was over, CM Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said the remaining work should proceed in such a way that the first passenger flight can start operations by end of Sept. He said airport authorities had been asked to increase the numerical strength of workers to meet this target. Along with the airport, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway 'missing link' project will help the state govt develop an economic corridor comprising Mumbai, Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Pune, he said. When the other planned or under-construction augmentation projects such as Chowk (Pune-Eway)-Pagote (JNPT) 30 km road, Sewri-Worli connector and smaller flyovers towards the expressway are completed, travel time between the two cities will reduce by an hour. Eighty-five per cent of the Expressway's current traffic is projected to use the new route. At the site after reviewing the 'missing link' project, Fadnavis described it as an engineering marvel, noting that it features India's longest road tunnel and highest cable-stayed road bridge under construction over the scenic Tiger Valley. "Pune is the cultural capital of the state, but now it has also developed as the manufacturing and technology capital. Therefore, these projects are important for all of Maharashtra," the CM said.
