Postecoglou's wish granted as fire alarm takes out VAR
LONDON : There was not much for Ange Postecoglou to be happy about during Tottenham Hotspur's 2-1 defeat by Nottingham Forest today but perhaps the Australian would have cracked a smile knowing the VAR system was out of action for several minutes.
Postecoglou has long been a vocal critic of VAR and said in early April that the review system was 'killing the game' after a Spurs goal was disallowed during a 1-0 loss to Chelsea.
Thankfully for officials today, no major incidents took place during the eight minutes VAR was unavailable due to what the Premier League said was a fire alarm at the Stockley Park facility in West London where the match footage is monitored.
A similar incident occurred in November when Manchester United's match at Ipswich Town continued without VAR because of a reported fire alarm at the same facility.

"I'm looking forward to Les Kiss coming in and taking over," the 59-year-old said when asked about extending again until the 2027 World Cup, which Australia will host. "I actually apologise to the players. A little while ago, I bit one of their heads off, and my son had had a bad day. I can normally separate the two things, but it does impact me when he's had a bad day. "I know that I've a short enough shelf life and need to be more present at home. I haven't been home for two months. "As much as I just think they're a great group of young men. There's other things that I need to make sure I tick off." In victory as in defeat, Schmidt is not given to hyperbolic comments about his team and he merely said that he had been impressed by how they bounced back after losing the second test, and the series, to a late try in Melbourne last week. He also gave a little insight into the thoroughness of his preparations after Saturday's match was suspended for 40 minutes due to a lightning warning in the area. That the Wallabies came out firing after the delay while the Lions were a bit flat was clearly no accident. "We had been warned that there might be lightning, so we had a little bit of a plan," Schmidt said. "We wanted to make sure that players kept moving. So we had different guys rotating onto the bikes. "We had four balls in the changing room that we've just thrown around just so they could stay connected, and the rest of the time it was really just trying to get us organised for the restart of the game. Newcastle sign goalkeeper Ramsdale on loan from Southampton
LONDON: Newcastle United have signed former Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton on a season-long loan, the Premier League club said today. The 27-year-old England goalkeeper, who made the second-most saves in the league last season at 125, has worked with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe during his spell at Bournemouth. "Aaron is an exceptional goalkeeper... Having worked with him before, I know what he can bring to us on and off the pitch, so we look forward to welcoming him into the group," Howe said. Newcastle, who finished fifth last season to secure a Champions League berth, begin their Premier League campaign with a visit to Aston Villa on Aug 16. Ramsdale joined Southampton from Arsenal last year on a deal valid until June 2028. He joined Arsenal from Sheffield United in 2021 and spent two seasons as their first choice, helping them to a 2022-23 runners-up finish in the Premier League, before losing his starting place to David Raya the following year.
