New Yorker Brian Tarrence vanishes while on romantic vacation in Turks and Caicos with his wife: ‘He basically disappears'
Brian Tarrence, 51, was seen on security footage leaving his rental in Grace Bay, Providenciales, and walking toward the tourist-heavy downtown area at around 3:30 a.m. on June 25, private investigator Carl DeFazio told News 12 Westchester.
DeFazio, who Tarrence's family hired, said nothing was out of the ordinary leading up to his disappearance.

'Everything prior to the point where he walked out of that house, he seems fine,' DeFazio said.
'They had a boat trip and went to dinner, just like every other family would do when they're here.'

However, that evening, his wife went to bed, and when she woke up, her husband was no longer at the Airbnb.
'We have him on camera, and he walks into town, and then he basically disappears, and we haven't heard from him since,' the former NYPD officer and Marine who has been a PI since the 1990s, told Fox News.
Tarrence, who recently moved from Monroe, New York, to Manhattan, touched down in Turks and Caicos with his wife of one year on June 22 and planned to stay until June 29.

Tarrance was seen leaving the Airbnb wearing a T-shirt, shorts, and sneakers.
He also had his cellphone and wallet with him when he left, noting that the area from which he went missing is 'very safe,' DeFazio said.
But why Tarrence left the rental in the first place remains a mystery.

'That's a little bizarre in itself,' he said. 'He's in the middle of town. His wife was sleeping.'

DeFazio has been working hard to obtain a record of Tarrence's phone activity on the islands, but it's a slow process, he said.
The PI said the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police have listed Tarrence as missing and are investigating the matter.
Police in the British Overseas Territory are utilizing every resource at their disposal to help find the New Yorker, including using drones to scan the area and reviewing CCTV footage in hopes of tracing his steps on the night of his disappearance, the PI said.
DeFazio added that he's 'very proud of the response from the local businesses and people on vacation,' many of whom have offered their assistance after missing persons flyers with Tarrance's face were distributed 'everywhere in Turks and Caicos.'

The seasoned investigator said he has no reason to believe foul play is involved in Tarrence's disappearance, but it not ruling out any possibilities.
'So far, we haven't been successful in anything, but we're not giving up hope. … What I tell the family … in cases like this: Stay positive until you have a reason not to be,' DeFazio said.
'He's a smart guy. … We don't know what's in his mind or if he did this on his own or if somebody took him in.'

Tarrance's wife is remaining in Turks and Caicos to help with the search.
Turks and Caicos police are asking anyone with information about Tarrence's disappearance to contact 911 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477.
In March, the US State Department issued a travel advisory for tourists to exercise increased caution in the Turks and Caicos Islands due to a rise in crime.

Last year, violent robberies grew by 143% and gun-related crimes by 123% in Turks and Caicos, according to InSight Crime.
Turks and Caicos Islands' homicide rate also surged to 103.1% in 2024 with 48 murders — making it the highest in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Oklahoma doctor accused of killing young daughter and faking a drowning at Florida rental home
An Oklahoma medical doctor is accused of traveling to South Florida and staging the death of her 4-year-old daughter to make it appear the child drowned in the swimming pool at their rented vacation home in the middle of the night, detectives say. Dr. Neha Gupta, a 36-year-old pediatrician, was booked into the Oklahoma County Jail in Oklahoma City on Tuesday. She is accused of first-degree murder in Miami-Dade County, an arrest warrant states. Gupta 'attempted to conceal the killing of the deceased victim by staging an accidental drowning within the swimming pool of a rental property,' a Miami-Dade sheriff's homicide detective wrote in an affidavit obtained by The Associated Press. In addition to facing the murder charge in Florida, she is accused of fleeing to the Oklahoma City area where she lives to avoid prosecution in Florida, according to jail records. Gupta is jailed without bond, and Florida authorities are seeking her return to Miami to face the murder charge. The records do not list an attorney for Gupta who could be reached for comment on her behalf. Gupta told investigators that she was sleeping with her daughter Aria at the Airbnb rental home in El Portal, north of Miami, when she heard a noise around 3:20 a.m. on June 27. She noticed a sliding-glass door in the bedroom that led to the outdoor patio was open. She then found Aria under water and unresponsive in the deep end of the pool, the affidavit states. Gupta said she tried to save the girl, but told the detective that she doesn't know how to swim and was unable to get Aria out of the water. Police and firefighters arrived and performed CPR on the girl, but Aria was pronounced dead at a hospital before dawn. A doctor who performed an autopsy at the medical examiner's office did not find water in the child's lungs or stomach, and that 'based on these findings she was able to rule out drowning as being the cause of death,' the detective wrote. Dr. Tuyet Tran also advised authorities that she believes the child was dead before being placed in the pool, the detective wrote. The cause and manner of death are pending, but Tran found injuries such as bruising within the girl's cheeks. Tran's preliminary findings are that these injuries 'are consistent with asphyxiation by smothering," the affidavit states. Police have not revealed any possible motive in the case. The detective noted in the affidavit that Gupta shares custody of the child with her ex-husband, who told detectives that he and his ex-wife are involved in an ongoing custody battle over the girl. The ex-husband also told detectives that he was unaware that Gupta and the child had traveled to South Florida. Based on surveillance video and Airbnb records, investigators determined that Gupta and her daughter were the sole occupants of the rental unit, the affidavit states. Gupta practiced medicine at Oklahoma Children's Hospital, part of the University of Oklahoma's health system, according to records from the Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision. The university's faculty directory showed that she has also been an assistant professor at the university's health sciences center. The University of Oklahoma and its health system released a statement this week saying that Gupta has been 'suspended from patient care, given notice of termination, and was no longer seeing patients at the health system as of May 30, 2025.'

Pediatrician allegedly smothered 4-year-old daughter, staged death as drowning: Police
An Oklahoma doctor has been arrested for allegedly murdering her 4-year-old daughter while on vacation in Florida and staging the death as a drowning, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office. Dr. Neha Gupta, a pediatrician from Oklahoma, was arrested on Monday and faces a first-degree murder charge. She is accused of smothering her 4-year-old daughter, Aria Talathi, to death and attempting to cover it up as a drowning, the sheriff's office said in a press release on Wednesday. Back on June 27 at approximately 3:41 a.m. local time, officers were called to a residence in El Portal, Florida, "in reference to a 4-year-old who was found unresponsive within a swimming pool," according to a police affidavit obtained by ABC News. Gupta, 36, directed officers to the backyard of the residence, where they found the child "submerged in the deep end of the pool," the affidavit said. The 4-year-old received CPR and was taken to a local hospital but "despite all life-saving measures," she was pronounced deceased at 4:28 a.m., officials said. Gupta, who shares custody of her daughter with her ex-husband, told authorities that the two traveled from Edmond, Oklahoma, to Miami and rented a short term rental home through AirBnB -- which is where the 4-year-old was found dead. Gupta's ex-husband, Dr. Saurabh Talathi, said he was unaware the child had left the state of Oklahoma and that the two parents were in an "ongoing custody battle," the affidavit said. Prior to the incident, the mother and daughter arrived at the rental property on June 26 between the hours of 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. and the child was "tired after a full day of riding jet skis along with spending the day at the beach and was asleep," she told authorities. Gupta told officials she carried her daughter into the residence and woke her for dinner at approximately 9 p.m. The child fell asleep at around 12:30 a.m. and the two "co-slept on a bed located within the master bedroom," the affidavit said. Then, at approximately 3:20 a.m., Gupta claimed she was awakened by an "unidentified noise," realized her daughter was not in the bed and that the glass sliding door leading to the patio was open, the affidavit said. Gupta said that was when she allegedly found her daughter submerged underwater, the affidavit said. She attempted to remove her child from the pool, but was "unsuccessful due to the fact that she is unable to swim," the affidavit said. She told officials she attempted to assist her daughter for 10 minutes before calling paramedics. On Sunday, an autopsy report revealed that the child's lungs and stomach did not contain any water and were considered "dry" -- ruling out drowning as the cause of death, the affidavit said. The medical examiner also noticed "cuts within the mouth and bruising within the cheeks" of the child's face, which is consistent with asphyxiation by smothering, the affidavit said. Officials also determined that the child was deceased before being placed in the pool, the affidavit said. The 4-year-old's stomach was also empty, which contradicts the mother's statement that her daughter ate dinner several hours before the incident, the affidavit said. Authorities then concluded that Gupta "attempted to conceal the killing" of her daughter by "staging an accidental drowning within the swimming pool," the affidavit said. Once they obtained an arrest warrant, detectives traveled to Oklahoma City and with the help of local officials, were able to locate and take Gupta into custody, according to the sheriff's office. Gupta is pending extradition to Miami-Dade County where she will be charged with first-degree murder, officials said. It is unclear whether Gupta has an attorney who can speak on her behalf.
