PETALING JAYA : A framework for sustainable data centres is expected to be introduced in October, according to investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz.
Tengku Zafrul said the framework, which will come under the purview of the digital ministry, will include strategic coordination with all relevant agencies and state governments regarding the implementation of data centre development projects.
He said the agreement was reached during the third meeting of the Data Centre Task Force for 2025, which he co-chaired today with digital minister Gobind Singh Deo.
'The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) will serve as the focal point for all applications for new data centre projects and expansions.
'This will ensure all initiatives and projects proceed smoothly, avoid duplication of functions, and support the development of a more sustainable and strategic national data centre ecosystem,' he said in a post on X tonight.
Tengku Zafrul said the meeting was crucial to ensure the development of Malaysia's data centre industry becomes more sustainable, competitive and investor-friendly.
The task force is a multi-agency strategic platform led by his ministry and the digital ministry to coordinate the planning and implementation of data centre projects holistically.

US-South Korea trade talks postponed over Bessent schedule as tariff deadline looms

South Korean officials have said access to US markets is key to industrial cooperation between the allies. (EPA Images pic) SEOUL : Talks between top South Korean and US officials to negotiate over US President Donald Trump's tariffs have been postponed due to a scheduling conflict for US treasury secretary Scott Bessent, South Korea's finance ministry said today. The two sides will reschedule the meeting between Bessent and South Korean finance minister Koo Yun-cheol, as well as the top trade envoys of both countries, as soon as possible, the ministry said. Koo was set to board a flight for Washington today to attend the meeting tomorrow in the hope of hammering out a deal that would spare Asia's fourth-largest economy from Trump's punishing 25% tariffs set to take effect on Aug 1. The sudden announcement by the finance ministry an hour before Koo's departure cast fresh doubts about whether Seoul would be able to pull off an agreement to avert US import duties that could hit some of its major exporting industries. The benchmark KOSPI stock index trimmed early gains to trade up 0.7% as of 1.34am, as auto and auto parts makers fell on news of the postponed talks, with Hyundai Motor dropping as much as 1.8%. Washington gave no further details for postponing tomorrow's meeting, the finance ministry said, though US officials are embroiled in a flurry of different negotiations. Bessent was set to meet China's vice premier He Lifeng in Sweden for a new round of trade talks ahead of the Aug 12 deadline set for Beijing. Washington is also moving towards a deal with the EU. 'Minister for trade Yeo Han-koo and industry minister Kim Jung-kwan, who have travelled to Washington this week, have been meeting with US officials as scheduled,' the South Korean government said. 'Yeo will hold a meeting with US trade representative Jamieson Greer,' the industry ministry said. Pressure on South Korea heightened this week after Japan clinched a deal with the US, which Trump said would see Tokyo allowing greater market access for American products including autos and some agricultural products. The two major Asian security allies of the US compete in areas such as autos and steel, and Japan's deal was seen by investors as a benchmark for the type of agreement Seoul should try to squeeze out in negotiations, analysts have said. The involvement of a range of ministerial-level officials from Seoul in broad discussions with US officials in recent days suggested the two sides were at work on a trade package that could potentially involve a range of sectors, including South Korea's sensitive farm markets. South Korean officials have said access to US markets is key to industrial cooperation between the allies that would help rebuild American manufacturing industries. Finance ministry officials in Seoul declined to comment on media reports that Washington is asking South Korea to set up a large-scale investment fund in the US to support the reconstruction of its manufacturing industry. South Korea has been reviewing the feasibility of joining a US$44 billion gas pipeline project in Alaska floated by Trump.

Ringgit ends higher against US$, other major currencies on Malaysia-US trade deal optimism

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit ended higher against the US dollar and other major currencies, buoyed by optimism that Malaysia could secure a more favourable trade deal with the United States (US), said an analyst. The local note also traded higher versus the US dollar for the fifth consecutive day. At 6 pm, the ringgit rose to 4.2135/2210 against the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2255/2300. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Malaysia is actively engaging in discussions with the US over the impending 25 per cent tariff rate set to take effect on Aug 1, aiming to secure a rate below 20 per cent. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said regional tailwinds further lifted sentiment after US President Donald Trump concluded a trade deal with Japan on Tuesday, which included reducing tariffs on the import of Japanese goods into the US to 15 per cent from 25 per cent. "These developments are fuelling hopes that Washington's broader tariff strategy is shifting from confrontation to compromise. "Against this backdrop, investors see Malaysia as a likely beneficiary of the next wave of bilateral deals,' he told Bernama. Innes added that the ringgit's recent gains may signal its potential to benefit from improved trade conditions following the US-Japan agreement. At the close, the ringgit was higher against a basket of major currencies. It advanced against the Japanese yen to 2.8751/8804 from 2.8837/8870, rose against the British pound at 5.7080/7182 from 5.7230/7291 and inched up against the euro to 4.9517/9605 from 4.9586/9639. The local note was firmer against regional peers, except the Philippine peso. It increased vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.2995/3057 from 3.3071/3109, appreciated against the Thai baht to 13.0570/0863 from 13.1370/1567 and improved versus the Indonesian rupiah to 258.5/259.1 from 259.1/259.5. However, the local note traded slightly lower against the Philippine peso, at 7.43/7.45, compared to 7.42/7.44 at yesterday's close. - Bernama
