Rally legend Carlos Sainz has decided not to run for the presidency of motorsport's governing body the FIA in December's election. The 63-year-old, who said in May he was considering the idea, explained that "the present circumstances are not ideal to set the grounds for my candidacy".Sainz said in a statement on social media, external that he believed the FIA "still needs important changes, which I remain genuinely hopeful will be tackled in the upcoming years".He added that a campaign would interfere with his preparations for next year's Dakar Rally.Sainz won the Dakar for the fourth time in 2024 and will compete in the desert event in Saudi Arabia next January with Ford.He said: "I have realised that properly running for president would notably compromise my preparation for the Dakar and I do not wish to weaken my commitment to Ford and my team."These concerns have therefore inclined me to be realistic and desist from my FIA endeavour for now."The only declared candidate for the election is the current president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, whose time in office has been beset by controversies. These involve changes to the FIA statutes that appear to extend his control, along with a series of sackings of senior figures within the FIA, and for his involvement in a series of situations that have angered many in Formula 1, from commercial rights holder Liberty Media to the drivers. The FIA is currently the subject of a lawsuit from Susie Wolff, the head of the F1 Academy for aspiring female drivers and wife of Mercedes motorsport head Toto Wolff.

Cristiano Ronaldo reveals reason behind Al Nassr U-turn after hinting at summer exit - and how partner Georgia Rodriguez feels about him committing to two more years in Saudi Arabia
Cristiano Ronaldo has explained his decision to sign a new two-year contract with Al-Nassr. The 40-year-old had been heavily linked with a move away from the Saudi Arabian club but has elected to stay put. Ronaldo is set to earn a basic £492million over the course of the deal, which is reportedly the most lucrative in sporting history. Portugal star Ronaldo has expressed his desire to win further silverware with Al-Nassr, with his only trophy with the club so far having been the Arab Club Champions Cup in 2023. Ronaldo said: 'Of course since day one I have a compromise that to make change not only in Al-Nassr but in the country too. My goal is always to win something important for Al-Nassr and of course that is why I renewed the two years more because I believe that I will be champion in Saudi Arabia.' Ronaldo confirmed that he received offers to play in the expanded Club World Cup but stated that he wanted to ensure that he is fully fit for Al-Nassr this season and also for Portugal ahead of next year's World Cup. Ronaldo continued: 'I had some offers to play World Cup but I think it didn't make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation because this season will be very long because this is the season of the World Cup at the end of the season. 'I want to be ready not only for Al-Nassr but also for the national team, so this is why I decide to play the last game for the Nations League and to not listen to anything and to be in this club, which I love.' Furthermore, Ronaldo stated that he believes that the Saudi Pro League is one of the top five leagues in world football. He said: 'We are still improving but I believe we are in the top five already. I still believe we continue to improve and we have time. We show the last two years that the league is going up all the time, so I'm happy because I know the league is very competitive. 'Only the people that don't understand anything about football and say this league is not in a top five. I believe 100 per cent in my words and the people who play in this league. They know what I'm talking about so this is why I want to stay.' Ronaldo added that his decision is fully supported by his family, including his partner Georgina Rodriguez. 'Well, my family always support me, it doesn't matter what decisions I take, not only in Saudi Arabia, but all the decisions that I took before, with Juventus, Man United, Real Madrid. 'The most important thing is that your family always support you and my family always support me in my decisions, so for me it's the most important. If they are happy, then I'm happy and they are happy. We have a good life, the Saudi people treat us very, very very good, and that's why we want to live here and continue our life here.' Although he had offers to play in the Club World Cup, Ronaldo wanted to stay at Al-Nassr The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has scored 93 goals in 105 appearances for Al-Nassr so far. He agreed to sign for Al-Nassr in December 2022 following the end of his second spell at Manchester United. During an incredible career Ronaldo has also featured for Sporting, Real Madrid and Juventus, scoring 938 goals in total when his contributions at international level for Portugal are also taken into account.

Ronaldo prefers rest to playing in Club World Cup
June 28 (Reuters) - Cristiano Ronaldo preferred to take a rest rather than play in the revamped Club World Cup, the Portuguese international said on Saturday after renewing his contract with Al-Nassr. The Saudi Pro League club announced on Thursday that Ronaldo had signed a two-year contract which would keep him at the club past his 42nd birthday. Speculation over the 40-year-old's plans intensified last month when FIFA President Gianni Infantino said discussions were underway about Ronaldo playing in the Club World Cup, despite Al-Nassr failing to qualify. "I had some offers to play in the World Cup but I think it didn't make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long as it is the World Cup season at the end of the year," Ronaldo said in a video posted by Al-Nassr on X. "I want to be ready not only for Al-Nassr but also for the national team. So, this is why I decided to play the last game for the Nations League and not listen to anything," he added. "And of course, to be in this club, which I love". Ronaldo scored for Portugal in the Nations League final against Spain earlier this month which ended 2-2 before his side went on to beat the European champions on penalties. The Portugal captain said his aim in staying at Al-Nassr was to win a major trophy with the Riyadh-based side. "My goal, it's always to win something important for Al-Nassr. And of course I still believe in that" Ronaldo added. "This is why I renewed the two years more because I believe that I will be a champion in Saudi Arabia". Ronaldo, who joined Al-Nassr in 2022 after leaving Manchester United as a free agent, has scored 93 goals in 105 appearances for them in all competitions. Ronaldo is also eyeing the 1,000-goal milestone in his career. He has scored 794 goals in club football and 138 for Portugal to take his tally to 932.

Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr ‘plot £85million move for Liverpool's Luis Diaz' after handing Man Utd legend new deal
Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr are prepared to pay Liverpool £85million for Luis Diaz, reports claim. The Saudi Pro League side are in hunt for fresh talent after handing Ronaldo the most lucrative contract in sporting history. 5 5 With two years remaining on his Anfield contract, Diaz opened the door to a surprise exit after confessing he was in talks with other clubs. The 28-year-old winger played a key role in Liverpool's title-winning season, contributing 17 goals and eight assists in 50 appearances across all competitions. Liverpool haven't offered Diaz a contract extension and he could be marginalised after the £116million arrival of club-record signing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. According to a report by Okaz, Al-Nassr have set their sights on Diaz and are open to offering a staggering £85million. Journalist Ben Jacobs confirmed Al-Nassr's interest and hinted that while Liverpool currently have no intention of selling, such a huge bid could tempt the club's hierarchy to reconsider. The report did add that "the final decision is left to the player himself", with the Colombia international also strongly linked with cash-strapped Barcelona. Al-Nassr are planning a mega recruitment drive after missing out on Asian Champions League football next season and failing to win a title since Ronaldo, 40, joined from Manchester United in 2021. SunSport previously reported that Liverpool valued Diaz at £70million, so the club might be drawn in by banking £15million more. 5 CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS But SPORT have claimed that Barca are "convinced" that they will finally land Diaz when the second-half of the summer window opens after the Club World Cup.
