No excuse for unjustified price hikes under SST, Johor traders warned
The operation codenamed Op Kesan 4.0, is a statewide enforcement blitz, which took effect early this month.
State ministry director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo said enforcement officers had conducted checks on 48 business premises involving 235 items, which was carried out under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.
During a walkabout at a supermarket in Larkin Junction here today, Lilis said the 48 premises were issued price information verification notices to obtain detailed data on cost, pricing, and profit margins.
"The ministry also received four complaints related to suspected profiteering under the operation, and investigations are ongoing.
"The operations main focus is to ensure that businesses do not exploit SST adjustments as a blanket excuse to increase prices without justification," she said in a statement today.
The enforcement operation will also monitor four key elements, which includes items and services affected by SST changes, businesses above the SST registration threshold, price movement timelines aligned with SST enforcement dates, and profit margins to detect unreasonable mark-ups.
Lilis warned that offenders found guilty of profiteering can be fined up to RM100,000 or jailed up to three years, or both. Companies face fines of up to RM500,000.
She urged businesses to assess the four elements before adjusting prices or charges and reminded the public to report suspicious hikes through official channels, including the Ez ADU app, WhatsApp, and the KPDN e-complaint portal.

The Finance Ministry (MOF) has clarified that recipients of the one-off RM100 SARA aid do not need to register, amid growing concerns over scam links and misinformation spreading online. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said the aid will be automatically credited to all eligible MyKad holders aged 18 and above starting Aug 31, and any claims that users must sign up through online portals are false and potentially dangerous. 'We've received numerous inquiries and complaints about fake websites and links related to RM100 Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid registration. 'Let me be clear, these are scams. Do not click on or share them,' Lim emphasised, while stressing that no application is needed as the aid will be directly credited to recipients' MyKad. On July 23, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that a one-off RM100 SARA cash aid that will be credited via MyKad to all Malaysians aged 18 and above. This part of broader Madani government initiatives, which also include toll hike postponements and a RON95 fuel price cut to RM1.99 per litre later this year. Lim added that in the event eligible individuals do not receive the payment by Aug 31, the government will provide follow-up information and guidance. Meanwhile, Lim also revealed that the government is reviewing proposals to include wet goods such as chicken, fish and meat under the SARA programme. 'The consideration is part of ongoing efforts to align the programme with real consumer needs, especially among lower-income households. 'We're open to feedback. Any expansion will be thoroughly studied in consultation with relevant stakeholders, including the recipients themselves,' she said. As of May 1, the SARA programme covers 14 categories of essential goods, including food, medicine, hygiene products, school supplies and household cleaning items, amounting to over 90,000 eligible products nationwide. MCBA foils attempt to smuggle exotic animals worth RM73,000
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Control and Border Protection Agency (MCBA) has foiled an attempt by a man to smuggle six exotic animals worth RM73,000 to Hyderabad, India. In a statement today, the agency said the local man was arrested in an operation involving its KLIA personnel and the Aviation Security (AVSEC) team at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1. "Acting on intelligence received, two KLIA MCBA officers along with three AVSEC personnel conducted a further inspection of a passenger's luggage. "The suspect was detained at 10pm after he was found attempting to smuggle several exotic animals on flight MH0198 to Hyderabad, India." MCBA said an initial X-ray scan of the luggage revealed suspicious images resembling wildlife. "Further inspection uncovered six wild animals - two silvery langurs (lotong kelabu), two siamangs, and two armadillos - all classified as endangered and protected species under both national and international laws." The agency said the 38-year-old suspect, from Selangor, was detained to assist investigations under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 and the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008. "All the seized animals have been handed over to the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) for further action," it added. The agency said the effort reflects MCBA's continued commitment to combating wildlife smuggling activities, which threaten the country's biodiversity and tarnish Malaysia's image on the international stage.
