20 best spring dresses you'll never want to take off, according to stylists and editors
To jump-start your spring wardrobe, I consulted three professional stylists about shopping for spring dresses and tapped Underscored editors for their recommendations too.
Old Navy Fit & Flare Sleeveless Linen-Blend Midi Dress
A floral dress complete with pockets, this breezy spring style makes for one of the easiest outfits you can pull together. It comes in regular sizing up to size 4X, as well as petites and a tall range. Plus, the price is just right.
Naggoo Wrap V-Neck Mini Dress
Senior lifestyle editor Tamara Kraus says this floral Amazon dress provides enough coverage to wear to the office and is just the right length for when the weather starts to warm up. It comes in a variety of floral colors and some other spring-ready prints too.
By Anthropologie The Nina Short-Sleeve Mock-Neck Mod Mini Dress
If florals aren't you're thing, this print is a mod nod to the spring trend without being too on the nose. Updates writer Ellen McAlpine added the style to her closet and says, "The shift silhouette is comfortable, flattering and versatile. The fabric feels more like a sweater dress, so it's been a great piece for the in-between seasons' weather." It comes in six other prints and colors, all in petite and plus sizes too.
Hill House Home The Matilda Dress
Hill House Home is one of our favorite places to shop for timeless spring dresses, and Sarah Tam, Rent the Runway's chief merchant officer, agrees. "This Hill House Home dress, with its ballet-inspired neckline, smocked back, puffed sleeves and a sprinkling of delicate flowers, embodies both femininity and fashion-forward elegance, making it a perfect choice for spring," she says.
Petal & Pup Tillie One-Shoulder Maxi Dress
This elegant one-shoulder dress will take you through spring garden parties, weddings and any other special occasions. The simple silhouette is surprisingly forgiving, and the retro-inspired florals are even prettier in person. I can't wait to wear it to a summertime soirée. Just be aware that the style runs a little large, so I would size down if you're on the fence.
Merokeety 3/4-Balloon-Sleeve Midi Dress
We're all about comfort, and this T-shirt dress provides just that. A few of our editors tried it out, and we love the soft jersey material and the cinched waist that gives it a lovely silhouette. A great option for work or a day off, the laidback style comes in nine striped colors.Read our review
Maggy London Placed Print Stretch Cotton Midi Shirtdress
Cindy Conroy, celebrity stylist and TV host, loves the statement-making print of this style, along with its short-sleeved silhouette. The illustrated palm trees and tropical landscape are fit for your next getaway.
Tuckernuck Black Double-Face Flannel Gianna Dress
Made with a heavy, soft flannel that's great for transitioning seasons, this dress is "perfect for the minimalist woman who likes her wardrobe to be more on the neutral side," stylist and style coach Samantha Dawn says. The simple neckline and belted waist gives it what Dawn calls a "a classy yet feminine vibe."
Madewell Seamed Mini Dress
Madewell makes some of our favorite denim. This shirtdress uses the brand's signature Airy Denim, which is a cotton and Tencel blend that is light and soft. This means it isn't as rigid as other denim dresses and instead has a figure-skimming, flowy fit.
Patagonia Amber Dawn Dress
Newsletter editor Lindsey Smith says this organic cotton dress is "super comfortable and flattering." It has crossed straps and an easy fit-and-flare silhouette. "I love that it comes in a variety of colors," she says. "I have the black one and pair it with a denim jacket and sandals, but it also looks equally as good with sneakers."
o.p.t Evie Cotton Dress
If you're a fan of trendy brands like Reformation, Staud and Dôen and want to get the look for less, retailer Few Moda is the key. Many of the styles it sells are made by the same manufacturers of the brands you already know but are available at a fraction of the cost with a cheap monthly membership. I love this sweet cotton frock from o.p.t for spring, inspired by a $250 designer style.
Hyacinth House Pink Tweed Kit Minidress
Stylist Katie Schuppler loves this pretty pink number. "This dress is a great option to rock the 'prep' trend without leaning too much into it," she says. "It's feminine, classy and classic while still being fashion forward."
Hill House Home Corinne Nap Dress
"Marrying elegant, demure style with grungy plaid is a tall order, yet this dress delivers," Conroy says. The cottage core-inspired silhouette adds a touch of romance, while the plaid cotton can carry you through multiple seasons.
Endless Rose Sequin Chiffon Maxi Dress
A special occasion calls for some sequins and chiffon. Schuppler says this dress is "a great option for a daytime party but could also be worn for an evening event as well. It's whimsical yet sexy." According to the stylist, pistachio is a hue we'll see a lot of this spring.
Kimchi Blue Virginia One-Shoulder Bow Midi Dress
Testing and updates writer Michelle Rae Uy is on the hunt for a party dress for spring and summer, and loves the flirty details of this polka-dotted dress. The ruffle trim and bows give it an extra-festive feel.
Bardot Adoni Mesh Maxi Dress
"I splurged on this dress last spring, and it quickly became a staple in my wardrobe," associate testing writer Carolina Gazal says. "I've dressed it up with heels for weddings and even wore it with a denim jacket and flats." The lace overlay dress comes in several shades, including a trendy butter yellow, Aqua, Lilac and more.
Quince 100% Washable Silk Slip Dress
A year-round favorite, this simple dress comes in 18 colors and prints. "This slip dress is a perfect base layer for the spring," Smith says. "It's gorgeous on its own, but there are so many different ways you can wear it by layering other pieces."
Endless Rose Sleeveless Textured Midi Dress
"The embroidery of this dress is so unique and could be used for more than your next beach vacation," Dawn says of this midi dress. It comes in seven colors, from vacation-ready ivory to this deep Wine shade that's been everywhere this year.
Never Fully Dressed Safari Erin Dress
This satin dress could easily be dressed up or down. "The color and the subtle print of this dress adds so much personality to your personal style without looking tacky," Dawn says. "The dress is classy and fun." It's also a size-inclusive option, coming in plus sizes and petites.
Banana Republic Stretch-Poplin Long Midi Dress
"A strategically placed cutout adds a daring touch to this ultra-feminine spring dress," Conroy says, adding, "I love that it's in one of the most-talked-about hues of the season: fruity red." The cotton style features a sweetheart neckline, gathered waist and full skirt for a comfortable and flattering effect. Because spring can look so different across the map, the season's trends don't always translate for your locale. That's why the stylists say to focus on the silhouette, length and versatility of your dress options, rather than focusing on trend-driven details. 'I would pay attention to the cut of the dress as that changes your visual shape overall,' Dawn says. 'Different strap widths can affect the shape of your shoulders, while the skirt volume can affect your overall proportions.'
Conroy says to ask yourself, 'What makes you feel beautiful and comfortable?' This can mean opting for a long-sleeved dress in an airy material so you still get that coverage or choosing a style that works with flats. 'Remember that a spring dress doesn't always have to include towering heels,' she says.
If you like to have fun with trends, the Schuppler says bohemian dresses, preppy styles and pistachio green are ones to watch. Dawn adds powder pink, chartreuse and icy blue to the trending colors, while lace patterns and bold florals are making a comeback too.
The following FAQs have been answered by stylists Cindy Conroy, Samantha Dawn and Katie Schuppler.
How do you style a spring dress?
How do you style a spring dress?
'Some places are still cold, so if this is the case for you, I would layer the spring dress with tall boots and a blazer or bomber jacket,' Dawn says. 'You could also pair your sundresses with sneakers for a more casual look.' Conroy adds that you can strike a balance with a sweater dress and ballet flats.
If the weather permits, embrace the warmth and 'start styling your dresses with open-toe sandals or loafers,' Dawn says.
What is the best fabric for a spring dress?
What is the best fabric for a spring dress?
The stylists recommend light fabrics that are good for layering. 'Cotton and linen will be your most breathable fabrics to wear,' Dawn says. 'Silk is also a natural fiber that can make you feel more luxurious in your dress.' Other more formal suggestions from Conroy include chiffon, crepe, organza and tulle.
'On chilly mornings or evenings, simply layer with a linen sweater, cotton cable knit or cotton-silk cardigan for added warmth,' Conroy says.
What colors are best for a spring dress?
What colors are best for a spring dress?
Schuppler says pastels are a typical choice, 'but those colors don't always look good on everyone.' The stylist adds that you can choose pops of color or neutrals that are complementary to your skin tone.
White or cream are always a good option, according to Dawn. She says you can also go bold with color. 'I love the lavenders and powder pinks that make your dresses have an even more feminine feeling,' she says. Meanwhile, Conroy calls out on-trend shades for spring like baby blue, olive and orangey-tomato red.

Fisherman Sandals Are the Surprising Comfy Shoe Trend of the Summer—and We Found 12 Pairs on Sale From Just $18
Living in New York City, I learned the importance of stocking my closet with comfortable walking shoes fairly quickly. After racking up 10,000-plus steps almost daily for nearly the last decade, I feel confident in my ability to identify a reliable pair of sandals from a mile away. So, when I spotted the Everlane Day Fisherman Sandals last summer, I knew they were exactly what my packing lists had been missing, and after over a year of wear, I can confidently say I was correct. With the fisherman sandal trend rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after styles of the season, I embarked on a mission to uncover the best deals on my favorite summer footwear look so you can add a pair to your own suitcase regardless of your budget. Retailers like Old Navy, Dr. Martens, and Melissa have all put unique spins on the design with prices starting as low as $18. Keep reading to find the 12 best deals on the stylish, comfy walking sandals you'll be wearing every day for the rest of the summer. Made with buttery-soft leather straps and shockingly cushy insoles, the Everlane Day Fisherman Sandals are my all-time favorite shoes of this style, and right now they're on sale for an impressive 50 percent off in all four neutral shades. The adjustable straps at the ankles create the perfect fit without causing chafing, and I've worn these shoes during long days at the office and sightseeing excursions—all without ever incurring a single blister. They look great with everything from my favorite midi dress to a simple pair of jean shorts, and after over a year of regular wear, they still look as good as new. If you're looking for an easy slip-on style that still has the classic woven fisherman look to it, these Franco Sarto mules are a no-brainer addition to your shopping cart while they're marked down under $100. Faux leather uppers are well-constructed and sturdy, while low block heels will prove to be easy to walk in and a level-up from more casual footwear options. Rubber outsoles will provide essential grip on slick surfaces while you're out and about exploring your destination, and they even come in black and silver, also on sale for 31 percent off and 40 percent off, respectively. Cole Haan has a reputation for crafting high-quality footwear, so when I spotted a pair of fisherman sandals double-discounted to $83 with the code SUNSHINE, I knew they were a must-have. This iteration of my favorite summer trend sports a thicker, chunkier outsole and gorgeous gold hardware at the straps, putting a more modern twist on the classic look. The woven design atop each shoe is adorned with decorative stitching, while the closed-toe finish makes them wearable with a pair of bright socks even when the weather gets colder. They come in three beautiful shades (ivory, black, and brown), but it's the black pair that's stocked with the best size range. Simply made and perfect for travel, these comfy fisherman sandals will pair well with everything in your suitcase—and they're a whopping 48 percent off in a woven raffia material. This unique take on the trend is suitable for casual or nicer wear and will pair effortlessly with everything in your existing summer wardrobe, and shoppers have even confirmed that 'no breaking in [is] required' since they're 'already soft and cushioned.' Best of all, they're available in a full range of sizes from 5 to 12, including half sizes. Looking to get the fisherman sandal style on a budget? Then you can't go wrong with snatching up the Dream Pairs Fisherman Sandals while they're on sale for just $20. The highly rated sandals boast cushy insoles and grippy outsoles that are well-suited for long days on your feet, and shoppers have revealed that they're 'super comfortable out of the box.' They have a slight heel that makes them suitable for a nice dinner or a day of sightseeing, and they come in seven beautiful colors, including metallic gold and silver. For a more bohemian, beachy take on fisherman sandals, the Jeffrey Campbell Tan Lines Espadrilles Sandals are an unmissable selection at 25 percent off, and they provide a gorgeous pop of color to even your simplest outfits. The outsoles are lined with a braided jute material that's destined for wear at the beach, while satin-lined uppers are luxurious and well-made, while remaining suitable for casual wear. Gone are the days of neutrals with these bright navy sandals packed into your suitcase. Men can get in on the fisherman sandal trend as well, and at a significant markdown since the Dockers Searose Fisherman Sandals are on sale for 44 percent off at Amazon right now. They come in sizes 7 to 15 (even including wide options), and are fitted with memory foam insoles for a supremely comfortable wear experience regardless of what's on your travel agenda. Flexible rubber outsoles bend with your feet without feeling too rigid, and they offer essential traction on a wide variety of surfaces. Marrying sport and style, these sandals are a vacation essential. My Dr. Martens boots are my favorite shoes to travel with during the colder months, so when I saw the top-rated Vegan Blaire Fisherman Sandals went on sale at Amazon for 41 percent off, I knew I needed to add them to my cart before my next trip. The thicker platform design is stylish without being impractical to walk in, and it features the classic yellow stitching and heel tabs as other footwear from the brand. They're an edgier take on the generally dainty fisherman style sandals, plus they're crafted with slip-resistant soles to provide safety and security. They're so popular that more than 200 shoppers have snagged them in the past month. $150 $75 at With chunky outsoles and lightweight, adjustable straps, these eye-catching platform sandals are an easy way to (literally) elevate every outfit, and right now you can snag them for 50 percent off at Nordstrom Rack. The heel height is tall enough to give you a few extra inches without making it difficult to walk, and in fact, one shopper likened them to 'walking on clouds.' Leather straps will only grow softer and more comfortable with every wear, and if you're searching for a durable pair of sandals that won't break down after just one season, these are your perfect match. $69 $49 at It's no secret that jelly shoes are another standout trend of the summer, so this pair of jelly fisherman sandals will be a timely addition to your suitcase while they're on sale for under $50. The classic Melissa Possession Sandals are perhaps one of the most popular jelly shoe options on the market, and this matte pink shade is a standout that will still be easy to style while adding some visual intrigue to any outfit you wear them with. They're fully stocked in sizes ranging from 5 to 13, comfy straight out of the box without any break-in needed, and so lightweight you'll hardly notice them in your suitcase. Did we mention they're bubblegum scented? Another pair of comfy jelly shoes in a more muted color, the Mia Jelly Fisherman Sandals are now marked down by 33 percent at Nordstrom, featuring an easy slip-on design. These retro sandals are a packable vacation pick that's both on-trend and functional, and they're fitted with the woven exterior and adjustable straps that this style is so well-known for. Whether you pair them with flowy linen pants or a flouncy mini dress, these sandals will get plenty of wear on your next vacation—and right now they're just $20. Currently on sale for $18 in a versatile bone color, Old Navy's fisherman sandals are not to be missed with their affordable price tag and comfy design. Faux leather uppers and cushioned footbeds ensure these shoes are both supportive and flexible, and their neutral coloring makes them easy to style with a wide range of outfits. Luckily, shoppers have confirmed the sandals' lasting comfort, with one customer noting that they cause 'no rubbing or pinching on the pinky toes,' while another called them 'great quality at a steal price.' The seams mimic the look of corset boning, minus the stiff discomfort of wearing an actual corset. Promising review: 'This is one of the reasons that Target is my go-to store for cute tops. I love a tube top, corsets, and denim in a bright color, so it wins on three things and was a must-have. I purchased my usual Universal Thread size, and the fit is great. (Cue the happy tears.) Promising review: 'Adorable top! Love the side ties on top. I stuck with my normal size. If you have a large chest (DD), it might be too small. Material is not see-through, so you could go without a bra.' —Kollette CPrice: $20 (available in sizes XXS–4X) A knit back-tie halter top that features contrasting stitching and a stylish cowl neck. The tie-back makes this top customizable to your specific proportions — and who doesn't love that? Plus, the 100% cotton construction is a real selling point during sweltering months when I'm trying to wear the lightest clothing possible. Promising review: 'Love this top. I also cut the tags and wear it inside out if I don't want to show the print.' —LovelydayPrice: $12 (available in sizes XXS–4X and three colors) A metallic satin tank top, which screams NYC summer in the park while eating a sandwich from the local bodega with all of your closest friends. (Was that too hyper-specific?) Shine bright like a disco ball, amiright? Promising review: 'I love the metallic look of this top. The little side ties really elevate the look. I only wish the straps were ties as well. The material feels so nice. I purchased my regular size and it fits well. I see that they are in store now, go buy it quickly before it sells out.' —VikkiPrice: $20 (available in sizes XXS–4X and two colors) An embroidered eyelet side-tie tank top that feels boho and looks a heck of a lot more expensive than it really is. This statement blouse looks great with traditional jean shorts, or you can really lean into the Laurel Canyon vibe and wear it with a tiered maxi skirt. Promising review: 'Adorable!! I don't think the photo does it justice. It looks and feels like great quality; it doesn't look cheap. The yellow gives like, a boho '70s vibe. I'm ordering the white now, I definitely feel like I need them both.' —AmpPrice: $36 (available in sizes XS–4X and two colors) A structured, boxy button-down, which is slightly cropped and pairs well with big statement earrings.
