Police intensify efforts to combat GBV and secure convictions nationwide
The police are escalating their fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) with targeted operations and ongoing investigations across the country.
In the past week alone, law enforcement arrested 100 suspects for rape and 16 for attempted rape.
This sweeping action forms part of a 90-day blitz designed to bring perpetrators to justice and reinforce public confidence in the police.

In a media statement, it was reported that Gauteng recorded the highest number of arrests, with additional suspects tracked down in other provinces.
The police also successfully apprehended 67 wanted rape suspects through various tracing operations.
These arrests reflect the police's unwavering commitment to fighting GBVF, protecting vulnerable communities, and ensuring justice for survivors.
Alongside these arrests, the police continue to secure key convictions in GBVF-related cases through the work of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
In one of the most severe sentences to date, the Bloemfontein Regional Court handed down life imprisonment to a 45-year-old man found guilty of multiple counts of rape involving a minor. The crimes were committed in October 2023.
Another significant conviction was secured in Sasolburg, where 30-year-old Tumelo Christian Khotha was sentenced to 26 years in prison for the rape and assault of a 17-year-old girl in March 2022. His sentence followed detailed investigations and a successful court prosecution.

Additional life sentences were issued in KwaZulu-Natal, where a 48-year-old grandfather and a 45-year-old uncle were found guilty in separate incidents of sexually abusing minor family members.
The Mtubatuba Regional Court heard that the grandfather had repeatedly raped his granddaughter since 2020 at their Dukuduku home. In a separate case, the uncle was convicted of sexually abusing his niece in Ezibayeni.
In a case involving child pornography, the Bloemfontein Regional Court sentenced 29-year-old Andre Meyer to three years' imprisonment, suspended for five years. Meyer had photographed a 12-year-old boy while the child was using a school toilet, an act that led to his conviction for creating explicit content involving a minor.
The police reaffirmed their dedication to addressing crimes against women, children, and people with disabilities.
The service noted it remains focused on ensuring perpetrators are held accountable and victims are supported through the justice system.
'The police remain dedicated to protecting children's rights and ensuring justice for victims of sexual crimes, especially women, children and people living with disabilities,' the statement read.

Less than 25% of Gauteng police stations have dedicated toilets for GBV victims
Gauteng has more than 140 police stations, and three out of every four leave GBV victims open to secondary harm due to a lack of private facilities. Gender-based violence (GBV) victims reporting incidents at police stations are frequently forced to use the same bathrooms as the public and officers. A report released by the Gauteng provincial government showed that only 23% of the province's police stations had dedicated toilets for those reporting GBV incidents. A non-profit organisation (NPO) specialising in the care of GBV victims warned that not providing those traumatised with discreet facilities could hamper reporting and investigations. Crimes against women While all 149 police stations in Gauteng had functional GBV rooms, only 34 had toilets dedicated to those reliant on the rooms' privacy. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi signed off the report, which was compiled after a written request submitted to the provincial legislature. South Africa recorded 13 452 sexual offences in the first three months of 2025 — including 10 688 rapes and 1 872 sexual assaults. Of the 2 042 rapes reported in Gauteng in the first quarter, 859 occurred at home, 336 occurred in a public place and 25 at leisure premises like a guest house or holiday resort, among other locations. Among the 30 stations with the highest number of rape reports were five from Gauteng, with Roodepoort placed fourth nationally, having seen an 81% increase from the same quarter last year. The other four listed rape hotspots in Gauteng were Orange Farm, Diepsloot, Alexandra and Ivory Park. The top three in the national were Thohoyandou in Limpopo, as well as Inanda and Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal. GBV assaults Of Gauteng's top five stations, Diepsloot, Alexandra and Orange Farm do not have private toilets for GBV victims, but Roodepoort and Ivory Park do. Gauteng also experienced 7 797 cases of domestic violence that involved assault and damage to property, with women being the victims in roughly 75% of the time. A United Nations (UN) report on the barrier to GBV disclosure showed that improved facilities led to women being more open to reporting their ordeal. 'More than half of the women participants (54%) cited shame as the main reason for not disclosing the violence they experienced, followed by a belief that they would not receive support if they did,' stated the UN report. 'Additionally, 41% of women reported feeling that they do not have access to a safe and confidential space to disclose the violence,' the report added. Privacy needed for reporting Policy development and advocacy specialist at Sonke Gender Justice (SGJ) Namuma Mulindi said the most important facet of dealing with GBV victims was to do so privately and with urgency. 'We found that in trying to provide safe spaces for GBV victims, we must be careful not to draw increased attention to who they are,' Mulindi told The Citizen. Through experience, SGJ have found that while dedicated toilets were available for victims at police stations, they were still visible to the public. 'Because of how these facilities and rooms were set apart from the main police station, anyone who came to the police station was able to immediately identify persons who had come to report a GBV case,' said Mulindi. 'This defeated the whole purpose of creating safe spaces designated for GBV victims, as it only drew attention to who they are and increased the issue of shame, leading to a reduction of cases reported. 'The spaces reserved for victims must be factored into police stations in a manner that does not draw attention to victims,' Mulindi advised. Chikunga urges stronger GBV fight as stats paint grim picture
The Saps recorded 969 women murdered, over 11 000 rape cases, and nearly 15 000 assault cases involving women. Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has called for a 'more deliberate partnership' between government and the Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) Response Fund to combat the ongoing scourge of violence against women. Chikunga delivered these remarks during a recent engagement with the Fund's leadership in Sandton, Johannesburg, where she stressed the urgency of aligning public and private responses. 'Let today mark the beginning of a more deliberate partnership, one rooted in shared responsibility, mutual respect, and an unwavering commitment to justice,' said Chikunga. 'Dire' statistics demand urgent action The minister warned that gender-based violence and femicide remain a national and global crisis. According to Chikunga, between January and March 2025, the South African Police Service (Saps) recorded 969 women murdered, over 11 000 rape cases, and nearly 15 000 assault cases involving women. 'Each of these numbers is a tragedy [and] a call to action,' she said. 'Violence continues where women should feel safest — in homes, workplaces, and places of worship.' Chikunga also drew attention to the plight of women with disabilities, noting that many experience violence without access to justice. 'These are the hidden faces of gender-based violence and femicide.' ALSO READ: 'Declare Limpopo a GBV disaster zone' – ANCWL GBVF Fund praised The GBVF Response Fund, which has reached over 772 000 people nationwide, was lauded for its efforts. However, Chikunga stressed the importance of coordination. 'We believe this is a critical moment to strengthen alignment… to ensure that survivors across all communities are supported with care and dignity.' Fund leadership, including interim CEO Zanele Ngwepe and Board Chairperson Faith Khanyile, joined the engagement with officials from the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities. ALSO READ: Protection orders and police 'failing victims of GBV' National Council reforms in the pipeline Chikunga confirmed that the long-awaited National Council on GBVF will be operational by April 2026 and will anchor implementation of the National Strategic Plan. She also announced the expansion of Thuthuzela Care Centres, a GBVF Dashboard, and 100-Day Challenge models to boost frontline responses. 'This work is not easy. But it is a non-negotiable because there can be no freedom… where women and LGBTQIA+ individuals live in fear,' said Chikunga. She concluded by inviting the Fund to support ongoing legislative efforts, including the Women Empowerment and Gender Equality (WEGE) Bill.
