Celtic transfer D-day fast-tracked as £40m deadline looms amidst five week countdown

The clock is ticking towards the most lucrative games of the season Another summer, another window of frustration so far for Celtic fans - and Brendan Rodgers knows the script all too well. ‌ We're just over a week away from the big Premiership kick-off and there are gaping holes all over the champions' squad. ‌ Alarm bells are ringing among the Parkhead faithful, who've seen this movie before - big sales, slow signings, and another race against the clock. ‌ Celtic have banked £27million from the exits of Kyogo and Nicolas Kuhn but are still searching for replacements. Shin Yamada might spring a surprise, but Rodgers has made it clear he wants more firepower through the door and fast. Record Sport understands at least one winger, a midfielder and a main striker remain top of Rodgers' wish list. ‌ And with just 38 days until the window slams shut, punters are understandably agitated at the lack of movement. There's been no shortage of departures - 12 out the door - but of the six new faces, only Kieran Tierney and Benji Nygren look first-team ready. ‌ As it stands, Celtic will kick off their title defence with Daizen Maeda, a 34-year-old James Forrest, and unproven pair Yang and Marco Tilio as their only fit wide options. Tilio's barely featured since arriving in 2023, and Yang has yet to convince. It's hardly ideal when a £40million, winner-takes-all Champions League playoff looms next month. ‌ Sure, plenty can happen between now and then. But there's no luxury of bedding players in. Celtic need ready-made starters, not projects. The transfer deadline falls one day later than usual this year - Monday, September 1 - with August 31 landing on a Sunday. But the real pressure point comes far sooner. Rodgers and his recruitment team have until midnight on Thursday, August 14 to register players for the playoff. UEFA rules allow two late additions to the 25-man squad until the day before the first leg on August 19/20. ‌ The Hoops will discover their playoff opponents when the draw is made on August 4 and by then, Rodgers will be hoping the board has backed him properly. These are the most lucrative games of the season - and Celtic can't afford to get caught cold. Chelsea agree deal for Palace star after beating eight clubs in transfer race

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign young Crystal Palace star Jesse Derry after beating eight clubs in a transfer race, according to reports. It's thought that a number of teams were keen on the 18-year-old, including PSG, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Celtic, Rangers and Bayern Munich. The England U19 international winger was originally set for a move to the Bundesliga, Fabrizio Romano posted on his X account. But the football transfer expert now claims Chelsea have hijacked the deal for the teenager, who is set for a medical at Stamford Bridge on Friday. Derry, who can play down the left and the right, ran down his contract at Selhurst Park with Chelsea now set to pay Palace a compensation fee. Derry has shined in the U18 Premier League, conjuring up 19 goals and four assists across 24 games for Palace U18s. He has also featured for Palace U21s and caught the attention of several top clubs when he scored against RB Leipzig U21s. Known for his direct approach and quick decision-making, Derry joins the list of exciting youngsters hoping to break into Chelsea's first team. Derry has previously played with Arsenal stars Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri for England U19s. He is the son of former Palace midfielder Shaun Derry, who played a total of 222 games for the south London club. Meanwhile, Chelsea fans have tipped Thiago Silva's son to become a 'club legend' after he was signed as a scholar ahead of the 2025-26 season. The Blues recently unveiled their latest group of first-year scholars, with Isago Silva one of 16 young players announced before the new campaign. More Trending The 16-year-old mainly features as a left-back but can also be deployed as a central defender. His father played 155 games for Chelsea from 2020 to 2024, with the club winning the Champions League during his spell at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea's new scholarship class also includes 16-year-old wonderkid Reggie Walsh. The teen is the only player in the 2025-26 intake to have appeared for the first team, having featured in the Conference League last season.
