Poundland chain confirms further store closures in a blow to shoppers
Investment firm Gordon Brothers bought the struggling discount shop last last month, with Poundland going into a 'restructuring' process.
Poundland confirmed today that 68 shops and two warehouses will shutter as part of the plan, subject to a court's approval.
The company told Metro that a full list of store closures though it confirmed that the end goal would be reducing the number of Poundland stores from about 800 to 650.
Poundland will also scale back its frozen food lines but also add more women's clothing and seasonal items, the business news website said.
In the latest blow for shoppers the shop's branch in Colchester, Essex, closed last week, with two more branches in Dudley and Telford shutting on July 18 and 19.
The bargain chain's 16,000 staff face an uncertain future as it negotiates with landlords to reduce rents amid tough trading conditions.
In the six months leading up to March, Poundland reported a 6.5% slump in revenue to £830million.

'It's sincerely regrettable that this plan includes the closure of stores and distribution centres, but it's necessary if we're to achieve our goal of securing the future of thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores.
'It goes without saying that if our plans are approved, we will do all we can to support colleagues who will be directly affected by the changes.'
Stephan Borchert, Pepco Group chief executive, said: 'This transaction will strongly support our accelerated value creation programme by simplifying the group and focusing on our successful Pepco business.'

Up to 280 locations of popular store chain are facing closure amid bankruptcy
Claire's accessories could be the latest high street casualty after announcing it's considering closing stores across the UK. The fashion accessories store, which claims to have performed more piercings than any other chain, has over 280 stores across the UK. However, the UK chain has incurred losses of £25,000,000 over the past three years alone, prompting the company to hire advisers to find a buyer for its British operations. The company is also considering bankruptcy, according to Sky News, and if the company is sold, it could lead to a number of their UK storefronts closing for good. One industry expert suggested Claire's could see a third of their shops closed, putting hundreds of jobs at risk. Company leaders cited 'general economic conditions' such as inflation, labour supply, currency rates and more, which had affected the shop's costs. In Greater London alone, there are at least 30 branches of the popular shop. The shop also reportedly has a £355,000,000 loan which they have to pay by the end of 2025. If the company moves forward with a sale or bankruptcy, Claire's will join the growing list of shops shuttering their doors across Britain. Metro has contacted Claire's for further information. In June, it was announced fashion retailer River Island was working working with consultants to draw up a way to keep stores going amid tough trading conditions. A 'significant' number of stores, as well as some of the 5,500 staff employed by the firm, could be affected by the move, Sky News reported. Just yesterday, it was announced that more Poundland stores were set to close after the chain was acquired in a rescue deal. Investment firm Gordon Brothers bought the struggling discount shop last last month, with Poundland going into a 'restructuring' process. Poundland confirmed that 68 shops and two warehouses will shutter as part of the plan, subject to a court's approval. The company told Metro that a full list of store closures though it confirmed that the end goal would be reducing the number of Poundland stores from about 800 to 650. More Trending New Look will also be closing down dozens of stores by the end of 2025, with the latest shutting its doors in Scotland earlier this month. Shoppers might enjoy the closing-down sales in the short term, but the move is likely to deal another blow to struggling UK high streets. Another store, in Wales, is due to close in August, bringing the total in the UK this year to 12, with another 26 in Ireland. The fashion giant has been planning to trim its high street presence for some time, but it reportedly increased the number of planned closures after the Autumn budget last year. Arsenal's transfer deal for Viktor Gyokeres at risk of 'complete collapse'
Arsenal's proposed move for Viktor Gyokeres is at risk of falling through after the club's latest talks with Sporting hit a 'dead end', according to reports in Portugal. The Gunners appeared to have seen off fierce competition from Manchester United to win the race for Gyokeres, as one of this summer's most talked-about transfer sagas looked to be drawing to a close. After a bitter dispute broke out between Gyokeres' agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, and Sporting regarding a potential transfer fee for the striker, the Gunners had finally seemed to have made a major breakthrough in their attempts to lure the Swede to the Emirates. Sporting had grown increasingly resigned to losing Gyokeres and Arsenal's hierarchy were even said to preparing a medical for the prolific forward over the coming days. But Record claim that while Arsenal's discussions had been advancing at a pace and were indeed heading in the right direction, their deal is 'at risk of falling through' due to significant 'funding discrepancies'. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. The report stresses that Arsenal and Gyokeres' camp presented a deal that guaranteed Sporting a fixed sum of €70million (£60.8m) plus €10m (£6.95m) in add-ons. However, the dialogue between the three parties hit a roadblock on Monday and negotiations are 'at risk of collapsing completely'. It's claimed the disagreement in question relates to proposed bonus fees. Sporting are demanding that the €10m bonus is easily attainable for Gyokeres, but Arsenal are 'resisting this request' as it stands. The report claims 'all scenarios are still open' and a public intervention from Gyokeres' entourage – or the player himself – could become a possibility in the coming hours. At the weekend, Sporting president Frederico Varandas made clear his feelings on Arsenal's attempts to prise Gyokeres away from their clutches. 'If the geniuses who are devising this strategy think this puts pressure on me to facilitate an exit, they are not only completely wrong, but are also making the player's exit conditions even more complicated,' an agitated Varandas said. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'No one is above the interests of the club, whoever they are. 'If they don't want to pay for Viktor fair market value, we are perfectly comfortable with this for the next three years [the time left on Gyokeres' contract]. 'We are calm about all this. Everything can be resolved with a market closure, a heavy fine, and an apology to the group.' Reports last month claimed Gyokeres has told close friends and family that he expects to be playing for Arsenal next season, with the Sweden international keen for another crack at the English game. Gyokeres scored 40 goals in 97 appearances for Championship outfit Coventry City before joining Sporting for a club-record €20m (£17.4m) fee two years ago. In that time, Gyokeres has netted 97 times in 102 games for Sporting to help the club win two Primeira Liga titles and last season's Portuguese Cup. Gyokeres' current contract in Lisbon runs through to June 2028. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
