Jack Draper knocked out of Wimbledon by inspired former finalist Marin Cilic

The Croatian lost to Roger Federer in the 2017 showpiece, three years after winning his only grand slam title at the US Open, but at 36 his best days appeared to be very much behind him.
Cilic rolled back the years with a sublime performance, hitting 53 winners in a 6-4 6-3 1-6 6-4 victory, but this will be a bitter pill for Draper, who has elevated himself into the world's top four but is still yet to go beyond the second round at his home grand slam.
British fans could have been forgiven for thinking Cilic had retired, with the Croatian back at the All England Club for the first time in four years.
A knee problem that required two operations and kept him out for the better part of two years might have been the end but Cilic was determined to come back.
His ability on grass has never been in doubt – although unexpectedly this was his first victory over a top-five player on the surface – with the former world number three twice winning the title at Queen's Club as well as his run to the Wimbledon final.
He returned to the top 100, meanwhile, by winning the second-tier Challenger event in Nottingham last month.

From the start of this contest, which strangely was not scheduled for Centre Court, Cilic showed he has not lost the metronomic quality of his flat, deep ground strokes.
Draper's weapons have been the talk of tennis this year but here he found himself on the back foot and scrambling several feet behind the baseline to try to find any semblance of control.
Cilic was returning Draper's serves back to his feet and seizing any chance he had to drill the ball into the corners.
Draper might have thought he had dodged a bullet when he recovered from 0-40 in the eighth game, letting out a loud shout of 'Come on', but Cilic played an incredible returning game two games later, ending it with a clean return winner on his first set point.
A chance to get a break of serve at the start of the second and halt his opponent's momentum came and went, and Draper was in deep trouble when he dropped serve again, with Cilic winning five games in a row.
Having been dumped out of the French Open in the fourth round by an inspired Alexander Bublik last month, Draper must have been having deja vu as Cilic continued to play at a level miles above his ranking of 83.
If there was a criticism of the British number one it was that he had been a little too safe with his ground strokes, and going into the third set he suddenly decided to go for broke.
It worked. Leading 2-1, Draper drew gasps from the crowd with a ferociously struck forehand and moved to 0-40.
Cilic saved the first two break points but on the third, after his ball-bouncing habit had finally earned him a time violation, he was unable to cope with a Draper backhand drilled down the line.
It was the breakthrough the 23-year-old desperately needed, and it was swiftly followed by a second break to give Draper and the crowd some much-needed hope.
He won three successive five-set matches at the Australian Open in January but had never come back to two sets down to triumph and, the longer the fourth set went on, the more Cilic looked the likely winner.
A mishit Draper forehand gave Cilic two break points in the eighth game but the home hope clung on, a forehand from the Croatian on the second peeping over the net tape but falling back on his side.
Draper was in trouble again two games later, though, and this time a netted forehand gave Cilic match point, which the Croatian took.

Jack Draper makes brutally honest admission about his game and reflects on 'lots of weaknesses' - after being dumped out of Wimbledon in the second round by Marin Cilic

Jack Draper admitted his grass court game needs significant improvement if he is to redress his miserable Wimbledon record, after he was dumped out in the second round for the third time in a row. 'I've been really disappointed with the way my game's been on the grass this year, in all honesty,' said the No4 seed after losing in four sets to 36-year-old Croat Marin Cilic on No1 Court. 'I wasn't feeling too great at Queen's. I don't know how I made the semis there. 'This year I really struggled on the grass. I felt great on the hard, felt great on the clay, I felt like there weren't many holes in my game, whereas as soon as I came on to the grass, I felt a big difference. 'It highlighted a lot of weaknesses in my game, especially against a player the way he was playing today, someone as good as him on the grass. 'I think the hole in my forehand showed up, for sure. I wasn't able to deal with his pace of ball into my forehand. I was over-spinning a lot. I think a lot of my success this year with my forehand was when I have more time and I can create the speed and the spin that I want.' Asked whether the pressure of expectation, as the British No1, played a part, Draper replied: 'It makes me think Andy's achievement of what he did winning here twice, just unbelievable. 'But it's not the pressure, I just didn't play good enough today. 'There's a bit of a misconception that just because I'm a 6ft 4in lefty, I must be incredible on grass. I obviously won Stuttgart last year but I haven't had loads of experience on it. 'I don't think I played incredibly well on it before. Obviously I've never gone past the second round here. 'I'm very determined to change that and make it a surface that is going to be great for me. I feel like that's the way with every surface. 'When you have the mindset of, even though I don't feel comfortable, I'm going to make it happen, I'm going to make it better for me, it usually works. That's what I did on the clay this year.' With Draper's exit, the British challenge rests with Emma Raducanu, Sonay Kartal and Cam Norrie, all of whom play on Friday. 'We still have British hope,' said Draper. 'Emma is playing great, I hope she goes on and does us all proud. She's definitely got the capability to do that. 'Cam, Sonay, these guys are going to be flying the flag now. I think they're incredible players, they all want it so badly. I know them all personally. They're all great people, great players. They deserve everything they're going to get. I'm looking forward to definitely watching them play…maybe I'll try to stay away from it, in all honesty, because it hurts badly, but I want them to have amazing success. They deserve that for sure.'

Wimbledon star held back from umpire as crowd boo 'embarrassing' decision

A furious Ben Shelton was prevented from approaching the chair umpire after his Wimbledon match against Rinky Hijikata was suspended due to bad light as he was about to serve for the match. Shelton, 22, was on the verge of a straight-sets victory over Hijikata when the umpire made the decision to suspend the match. The 10th seed won the first two sets 6-2 7-5 and was about to serve for a place in the third round. Shelton had discussed the possibility of a suspension at the start of the third set but it looked as if the players would be able to get through the match as he led 5-4 on serve. Australia's Hijikata saved three match points in the previous game and will live to fight another day after the umpire called time at the following changeover. 'Ladies and gentleman, play is suspended due to darkness,' the umpire announced at just before 9.30pm, sparking raucous boos from the crowd on Court Two. Shelton was furious with the decision and walked in the direction of the chair umpire only to be ushered away by another match official. Ben Shelton reacts to his match against Rinky Hijikata being suspended at 9:29 PM local match will be resumed tomorrow after play is suspended due to darkness. — SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) July 3, 2025 After composing himself, Shelton gestured to the spectators who were deprived of the chance to see him finish the match and book his place in the third round of Wimbledon. A commentator on American TV said: 'Oh my goodness. This is unbelievable. The officials have painted themselves into a corner. 'It's a tough situation but they [the officials] did this to themselves by not stopping in at 4-2 when they were willing to go off. 'Now Ben's furious that they're stopping. He's got to come out tomorrow cold and serve for the match.' The decision was branded 'embarrassing' and 'ridiculous' by many fans on social media. The match will resume on Friday, depriving Shelton of a full day-off ahead of his likely third-round clash with the winner of Gael Monfils vs Marton Fucsovics. That second-round match was also suspended on Thursday evening after Fucsovics won a tie-break to level at two sets apiece. Earlier in the week, Taylor Fritz's clash with Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard had to be completed the following day after officials suspended the match despite there being around 45 minutes of playing time left. Both players were asked if they wanted to continue and as they did not agree – Perricard was keen to come back the following day – the officials opted to pause the match. World number one Jannik Sinner had no such problems as he eased his way into the third round with an emphatic win over Aleksandar Vukic. More Trending Sinner, seeking his maiden Wimbledon title, has dropped just 12 games across his first two matches at the All England Club. The three-time Grand Slam champion remains the second-favourite to win the men's title, however, behind two-time defending champions Carlos Alcaraz. Novak Djokovic, bidding to win a record-equalling eighth Wimbledon title, is also through to the third round, but British number one Jack Draper was knocked out by former US Open winner Marin Cilic. World number ten Shelton is yet to reach the second week of Wimbledon but made it to the semi-finals of the Australian Open, where he lost to eventual winner Sinner. Sport stars pay tribute to late Doddie Weir in birthday video

Rugby stars Kenny Logan and Rob Wainwright and other sporting legends have paid tribute to the late Doddie Weir in a video released on what would have been his 55th birthday. The video has been created to honour the memory of Weir, and the legacy of the foundation he set up to find effective treatments for motor neurone disease (MND) after he was diagnosed with it in 2016. Weir founded the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation in 2017, and died in November 2022 aged 52. Those in the video include Olympic swimming medallist Duncan Scott, Olympic curling medallist Eve Muirhead, broadcaster and ex-footballer Ally McCoist, former England rugby player Mike Tindall and British and Irish Lions fly-half Fin Smith. Supporters from across the UK will wear Doddie tartan to work on Friday July 4, as part of a tradition marking what would have been the former rugby player's birthday. Kenny Logan, who played alongside Doddie as part of the 1999 Five Nations-winning Scotland side, said: 'Doddie was a leader in life, and he remains a leader in death. 'His memory inspires thousands of people, both inside and outside of the MND community, to take action and help bring an end to this devastating disease. 'We all know Doddie should still be here with us. He brought light and laughter into every room, even in the darkest days. It's up to all of us to dig deep, keep fundraising and finish what he started. 'We do it because we miss him. We do it because we love him. And we do it because nobody else should have to go through what he and his family did.' The My Name'5 Doddie Foundation has now committed almost £20 million to targeted research projects and launched a Catalysing A Cure strategy to speed up the search for effective treatments. Earlier this year it pledged £4 million to the MND Discovery Network, a new UK-wide initiative connecting leading scientists to accelerate progress. The film also features Jennie Starkey, who is living with MND and is part of the Foundation's Discovery Network board. The video comes after the end of the Doddie's Lions Challenge, in which a team led by Logan and including Ally McCoist, Gabby Logan, and Doddie's widow Kathy, cycled 555 miles around the island of Ireland in five days to deliver the match ball for the British and Irish Lions vs Argentina fixture in Dublin. The ride has so far raised almost £650,000 for MND research. My Name'5 Doddie Foundation chief executive Nicola Roseman, said: 'Doddie's spirit continues to galvanise the MND community. 'The outpouring of support and emotion on what would have been his 55th birthday shows just how many lives he touched and how much his story still matters. It also reminds us that there is still work to be done. 'Every birthday that passes without Doddie is another reminder of the urgency of our mission.'
