‘Frankincense priest' shares Oman's sacred scent

Observer2 days ago
AmidST the frankincense hills and coastal breezes of Salalah, an Austrian Catholic priest has discovered more than just a destination — he has found a sacred bond.Fr Mario Brandstätter, parish priest from Hartberg in the Styrian region of Austria, calls Salalah his 'fragrance city', a place where the sacred scent of frankincense has shaped both his spirit and scholarship.'It was like meeting an old friend', says Fr Mario, recalling the first time he touched the resin from the Boswellia sacra trees in Salalah during his visit in February 2024. 'After decades of working with incense in Europe, finally being able to smell, touch and taste the raw resin in its homeland was a heavenly experience'.So deep is his passion for frankincense that fellow clergy in Austria affectionately call him 'the incense freak'. But for Fr Mario, this isn't just a hobby — it's a lifelong calling rooted in faith, culture and healing.During his maiden trip to Oman, Fr Mario was overwhelmed by the dramatic contrast of Dhofar's landscapes — the endless desert sands, the tranquil sea and the lush hills scented with ancient resin.

'The perfume puff from Omani dishdashas intrigued me instantly', he said. 'Then the incense souk hit me like an olfactory explosion'.His travels included sacred spots such as the tombs of Prophet Job or Prophet Saleh, but it was the warmth of Omani hospitality that etched itself deepest in memory. 'I felt safer in Salalah than in many parts of Europe', he said.Fr Mario is no stranger to spreading the scent of Oman far beyond its shores. Back in Austria, he runs a museum in his rectory called 'The World of Scents', offering lectures, tastings and incense-burning workshops.'As a trained merchant and priest, I advise monasteries and parishes on incense use', he said. 'There is a spiritual and emotional response in people when they inhale high-quality frankincense. It crosses all boundaries — cultural, religious and even scientific'.He also held a talk titled 'The Frankincense Priest in the Land of Frankincense' to inspire Austrians to join his return trip to Salalah in February 2026, a journey already fully booked in partnership with Gruber Reisen, an Austrian travel agency and tour operator; and 'Your Salalah Tour'.

'Our tours cross borders and connect cultures — and the common thread is frankincense', said Uta Ohme, his German collaborator and Rashid from Your Salalah Tour. 'Fr Mario brings deep knowledge and immense passion for the incense traditions and we deeply value his bridge-building efforts between Europe and Oman'.In a world often divided, Fr Mario sees incense as a bridge — not just between continents, but between people. 'This 4,000-year-old Egyptian saying I came across in Salalah sums it up: 'No day is beautiful without a pleasant fragrance'', he said. From advising churches on the right incense to helping individuals craft rituals for special moments, his work goes beyond religion — it's about wellness, culture and connection.'The wisdom of burning frankincense for body, mind and soul is being rediscovered even by modern medicine', he explains. 'What was once misunderstood is now being revered again — and Oman sits at the heart of that rebirth'.
Inspired by the sacred scent trails of Salalah, Fr Mario Brandstätter established the 'World of Scents' museum within his Austrian parish — a heartfelt tribute to Oman's rich frankincense heritage. Deeply moved by the essence of Dhofar, he transformed his lifelong passion into a curated space that brings the soul of Salalah to Europe

Tourists flock to Dhofar, fueling local trade and enterprise

Salalah – Dhofar is witnessing increased commercial activity across its markets and shopping centres during the 2025 khareef season, driven by a surge in visitor numbers. The uptick in tourism is supporting the local economy and strengthening both the retail and hospitality sectors. Shoppers are turning out in large numbers at traditional markets and modern malls. Retailers of handicrafts and local delicacies are reporting brisk business, alongside high demand for restaurants, cafes, hotels and leisure services. Small and medium-sized enterprise owners say the season presents a key opportunity to boost sales and visibility. They emphasised the importance of promoting national products to meet the expectations of a diverse tourist base. Nour bint Ali al Yafaei, owner of Bint al Janoub, said her business draws on more than three decades of experience in producing incense and perfumes using Dhofari ingredients. 'We opened our first branch in 2020 in Salalah and the second in Al Hafa in 2024 to meet growing demand, especially during khareef when tourists seek out gifts,' she said. In the gifts and confectioneries segment, Do Chocolate and Flowers has seen a spike in demand. Its range of luxury chocolates, floral arrangements and seasonal offerings continues to attract customers. Owner Rami bin Muslim al Kathiri said his business model reflects the importance of adapting to tourist seasons while contributing to the local retail economy. Aqeel bin Alawi al Marzaa, founder of Mecca Perfumes, said his business is rooted in Oman's frankincense heritage. With more than 15 branches across the country, the company operates a dedicated factory for frankincense oil extraction and exports, along with integrated production lines. 'We have developed over 150 aromatic products. Tourists are especially drawn to traditional perfumes blended with natural ingredients,' he added. The food sector is also benefitting from the seasonal upswing. Al Hosni Omani Sweets, which has been producing traditional sweets for decades, now runs more than ten branches in Oman and several others in GCC countries. Founder Tariq bin Salem al Hosni observed that tourists are particularly drawn to Omani halwa and often seek insights into its preparation. 'Halwa remains a symbol of Omani hospitality and sees strong demand during the tourist season,' he said, adding that the business once earned a Guinness World Record for baking the largest cake in the shape of Oman's map. Tourists and residents agree that the khareef season has helped transform Dhofar into a vibrant commercial hub. Hilal bin Khalaf al Shariqi said local enterprises enrich the tourism experience and called for institutional support to ensure their growth. 'The best thing about the Hafa Beach Market is the blend of heritage and modernity,' said visitor Abdullah bin Salem al Ghaithi. 'Perfumes, incense, sweets and handicrafts occupy the space creating a unique atmosphere, with light rain adding to the charm.' Majid bin Abdullah al Shariqi observed an increase in demand for seasonal clothing and tropical fruits such as coconut, papaya, pomegranate, banana and mango, as well as camping and travel supplies. He said khareef marks a major shift in local trade patterns. Abdullah bin Amer al Aisaei, a visitor from the UAE, said the quality of local products and the organisation of Salalah's markets, especially the Hafa Beach Market, stand out. He praised the clarity of pricing and oversight by local authorities. 'But above all, it's the cool, pleasant weather that makes Dhofar a unique destination at this time of year.'

Ghaf tree inspires Heritage café in Samayil

Samayil – In the heart of wadi Samayil, a heritage-inspired café is drawing attention for its unique blend of memory, nature, and modern design. Ghaf café, named after the more than 50-year-old ghaf tree at its center, stands as a symbol of preserving the past while embracing the present. Founded by Al Qasim bin Sulaiman al Hashimi and his family, the café was built over three years using Omani craftsmanship and materials sourced from abroad. The project was the vision of Al Qasim's father, who designed the café to reflect both traditional and global architectural influences. Once a rest stop for locals and travelers sipping freshly brewed coffee under the shade of the ghaf tree, the site has now been transformed into a cultural and economic attraction. It exemplifies a growing trend in Oman to revive and develop natural and heritage sites into sustainable tourism projects. Al Hashimi shared that despite challenges—such as limited technical expertise and material delays—the café became a reality through dedication and deep-rooted family values. Ghaf Café now stands not only as a business but as a living tribute to the stories and legacy of the land.
