Rian Oberholzer defends Springbok ticket prices amid public criticism

SA Rugby chief executive Rian Oberholzer has defended the current ticket prices for Springbok matches following recent criticism from the public.
South Africans have turned to social media in recent months to vent their frustrations, with many hesitant to spend their hard-earned money to watch the double world champion Springboks.
The 2025 Test schedule is less glamorous than that of 2024, when Ireland visited for two high-profile Tests. This year, the Springboks hosted the Barbarians in Cape Town last Saturday, and will face Italy in Pretoria and Gqeberha, followed by Georgia in Mbombela in the coming weeks.
There were many empty seats, especially behind the poles, during the Barbarians match on a bitterly cold and wet day in Cape Town. Thousands of unsold tickets also remain for tomorrow's fixture against Italy at Loftus Versfeld.

Normally, Springbok Test tickets sell out quickly, but it appears the combination of opposition and pricing is making supporters think twice about attending.
During a recent investigation, Independent Media compared ticket prices for some of the Springboks' away matches this year — including the much-anticipated Rugby Championship clash against the All Blacks at Auckland's Eden Park — using the 'Big Mac Index'.
According to the data, the most expensive ticket for the Boks vs All Blacks match is, after conversion, around R968 — significantly lower than the top-end R3 000 tickets for Springbok home fixtures.
Similarly, the most expensive tickets for the Springboks' Tests against Argentina in London and Wales in Cardiff are also cheaper, calculated at R1 469 and R1 017 respectively.
However, Oberholzer maintains that domestic ticket pricing is fair and necessary to keep the sport afloat in South Africa.
'We feel that we are fairly priced,' he said during a media briefing, where Hyundai announced they had expanded their collaboration, which will now also include the Springboks and all other national teams, with SA Rugby.
'We have to look after the whole ecosystem of rugby in South Africa — from the Springboks right down to the youngsters starting out at the age of nine.
'We generate our own funding. We don't receive any funding from elsewhere. We rely on sponsorships and broadcast rights … and a new income stream we have tapped into is events — owning our own events — which benefits more than just the unions hosting the Test matches. There's now a bit more money to go around.'
The ticketing model for Springbok matches has changed in recent years, with SA Rugby now managing the events directly, rather than selling them off to host unions.
Previously, unions would pay SA Rugby a fixed fee and determine their own ticket prices, while also earning revenue from food and beverage sales at the venue. Now, SA Rugby runs the entire matchday operation and retains full control of the Springbok brand.
'[It's about] controlling your own product,' Oberholzer explained. 'The Springbok is our biggest income generator. Test matches were previously our smallest income from that brand.
'If you compare it to England and Ireland, where nearly 50% of their income comes from Test matches, ours was around 20%. So, we had to adjust our models to fund our programmes — and more importantly, our unions.
'Previously, most unions received no income from Tests — only those hosting them. Our new model ensures that every union in South Africa benefits from Springbok matches played in the country.'
Nevertheless, Oberholzer admitted that ticket pricing would be reviewed at the end of the year, particularly in relation to seats behind the poles, which were once the cheapest but are now almost as costly as prime seats along the touchline.
'We used, as a base, last year's pricing,' he said. 'We looked at the ticketing system used in Cape Town for the All Blacks Test and at other unions, where we felt prices had been set too low.
'There are now four ticket categories. We have a top category and a fourth category, which are our cheaper tickets, to make matches accessible to people from across the board.
'We'll review the system. Perhaps we made a few mistakes in terms of where the ticket categories were placed. Maybe a category two ticket shouldn't be behind the goalposts. These are things we are actively working on.'
He concluded: 'We do believe our pricing is fair. If you look specifically at category one tickets, they're the first to sell out. But we're learning from this year, and hopefully by next season, we'll have the pricing structure exactly right.'

NSPCA takes aim at Durban July and cruelty in SA's horse racing industry
A new campaign to clean up South Africa's horse racing industry started with a fashion statement that shocked glamorous guests at the country's premier horse race. The Durban July held last weekend was South Africa's most glamorous day of racing — a swirl of high fashion, Champagne flutes and big bets. Amid the spectacle, actress and activist Nirvana Nokwe stepped on to the red carpet dressed not to dazzle, but to disturb. Draped in an unsettling art piece paying tribute to racehorses abandoned and broken when they're no longer profitable, Nokwe's striking look was a wake-up call: the 'sport of kings' is built on suffering. Her bold statement launched the National Council of SPCAs' (NSPCA's) Rein in the Pain campaign — a challenge to the Durban July's glossy image and a call for South Africans to confront the cruelty that lurks behind the roar of the crowd. 'This isn't just about what happens on race day,' said Nokwe. 'It's about what we don't see — the tongue-ties, the brutal whipping, the strained tendons, the fractured legs, the bleeding lungs. Fashion can make a statement, and this one says: It's time to change.' The dark truth According to the NSPCA, behind the turf tracks, mint juleps and TV cameras is a brutal system. Thoroughbreds — the sleek, high-speed horses synonymous with the Durban July — are bred for explosive performance. They can hit 60km/h in just a few strides, but that speed often comes at the cost of broken bones, strained ligaments and shortened lives. Many horses begin racing before their skeletons are fully developed, leaving them prone to injuries that force early retirement, or worse. 'These magnificent animals are being silenced by a system that too often places profit above their welfare,' said Jacques Peacock, NSPCA communications manager. 'Tradition can't excuse cruelty.' Every year, the South African racing industry registers around 2,000 new thoroughbred foals, adding to a population of about 30,000. Only a fraction of these will ever make it to the big racecourses. Many of those that do will be cast aside when they stop winning — and their new lives are often far from the manicured paddocks they once knew. The 'lost horses' While some racehorses have second careers in showjumping or leisure riding, a disturbing number simply vanish. A Daily Maverick investigation into the thoroughbred world revealed that thousands slip into a welfare black hole when they no longer earn. Some end up in slaughterhouses, their meat sold for lion parks or game reserves. Many more fall into the unregulated world of 'bush racing', where abandoned racehorses are flogged to race for small stakes or illegal bets on potholed dirt roads and tarred township streets. In these informal races, dubbed 'community racing', the cruelty can be staggering. Saddles are often ill-fitted or non-existent, bits are replaced with wire that tears mouths, and exhausted horses collapse from injuries or overwork. When the NSPCA inspected an Eastern Cape race, they found more than 100 ex-thoroughbreds, many with injuries so severe they had to be euthanised on the spot. 'They used to be pampered, treated better than most humans,' said an NSPCA inspector. 'Now they're tossed away like old shoes at a jumble sale.' Racing's shaky foundations While informal bush racing booms, formal thoroughbred racing in SA is on the decline. Since 1990, the number of horses starting races has dropped by nearly a third. In 2022, when we did the investigation, half of the country's racecourses had shut down, and the number of breeders and stud farms had plummeted by more than 80%. Once a lucrative spectacle, thoroughbred racing now survives largely thanks to betting houses and bookies, who rake in billions while owners struggle to cover the spiralling costs of raising and training a winning horse. 'You have to be wealthy to own racehorses, but you're not likely to get wealthy racing them,' said an owner. 'You're lucky if a win covers a few months' stabling costs.' Yet the real losers aren't the owners — they're the horses. The NSPCA argues that the racing industry's obsession with breeding and speed is producing more animals than it can or will care for. And once these horses leave the formal tracks, the National Horseracing Authority (NHRA) admits it has almost no power to track what happens to them next. Bush racing pipeline From the plush paddocks of the Durban July to the dusty roads of rural racing, a hidden pipeline funnels discarded thoroughbreds straight into a world of unchecked suffering. Some are sold or simply given away when they can't win any more. Others are bought up by owners who lack the knowledge — or the resources — to care for such high-maintenance animals. 'The big problem is thoroughbreds,' says Stanley Adam of the Eastern Cape Horse Care Unit. 'They're like Ferraris — you can't take a Ferrari and drive it down a gravel road and expect it to blossom.' Traditional racing is deeply woven into rural life. For some, it's a point of pride, a cultural celebration. But the lack of regulation can leave horses exposed to horrific injuries, doping, malnutrition and abuse. And unlike formal races, there are rarely vets on site and no accountability. However, the NSPCA's Farm Animal Protection Unit tries to inspect every informal or community race that takes place in SA. 'We rely on donations and used to do inspections as far up as Kuruman,' said Theresa Hodgkinson of the Highveld Horse Care Unit. 'But funding dried up. Now we see more thoroughbreds sold into informal racing — and many are in terrible condition.' A roadmap for change The NSPCA's Rein in the Pain campaign isn't just about raising awareness — it's about fixing a system that, in the organisation's view, is built to fail the animals at its heart. It has drafted clear, practical amendments to the NHRA's rules, setting a minimum standard for change. Key demands include: Banning performance-enhancing drugs and masking agents used to push injured horses through races; Phasing out harmful equipment like tongue ties by the end of this year; Completely banning whips by 2029 — with strict limits and schooling for jockeys in the interim; Ensuring that horses are microchipped by six months old and properly tracked from birth to retirement and beyond; Prohibiting racing horses under three years old to prevent premature skeletal damage; and Enforcing lifetime care and accountability, with criminal charges and lifetime bans for repeat offenders. 'These reforms are the bare minimum,' said Peacock. 'They're not exhaustive, but they're a start. This is about public trust — people need to see the industry take real responsibility for the animals that make it possible.' For the NSPCA, the real test will be whether ordinary South Africans demand this change. It's calling on the public to sign its petition at and to hold racing's big players accountable for the animals behind the betting slips and fancy hats. 'Our goal is simple,' says Peacock. 'We want the industry to stop pretending that window-dressing measures and paltry fines are enough. It's time for meaningful change — and it starts with every one of us saying, 'Enough is enough.'' Banyana sweat in the heat to see off Ghana in Wafcon opener
Banyana Banyana had to work hard in the heat for a 2-0 opening Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) Group C victory at Stade d'Honneur in Oujda on Monday. Linda Motlhalo's 29th-minute penalty and Jermaine Seoposenwe's strike in the 35th gave the defending champions a 2-0 lead at the break in a match played in 34°C late afternoon Moroccan midsummer heat after a 5pm local-time kickoff (6pm in SA). Banyana were under a good deal more pressure in the second half, where Ghana rocked the woodwork twice, but also again had their chances as they managed the clash and scoreline to the end. South Africa coach Desiree Ellis will be delighted with the result — she said ahead of the game opening a tournament group stage with a win means everything. She might have some concerns over some of her team's defending and how they seemed to tire in the last half-hour. The South Africans meet Tanzania in their next fixture on Friday and complete their group campaign against Mali next week Monday, both also at Stade d'Honneur. Both those games are at 8pm in Oujda (9pm SA time), when temperatures might be marginally more manageable. Ghana's heyday in the Wafcon came in the late 1990s and early 2000s when they were runners-up three times, finished third twice and fourth once in six successive competitions, a period where they also reached three World Cups. They have been less successful in the seven tournaments since, which have yielded one semifinal, four group exits and two failures to qualify. Still, they are a competitive and pedigreed women's outfit in Africa. Banyana had to have their wits about them, with goalkeeper Andile Dlamini also a strong last line of defence, to keep their clean sheet on Monday, also working hard for their chances. Banyana took a two-goal lead to the break that was deserved on balance of play and the territory and possession the South Africans enjoyed, though they also had the odd nervous moment at the back. One of those came early on when Dlamini had to tip left-back Anasthesia Achiaa's lob over the bar. Banyana's opener came after a video assistant referee review rule Ghana defender Grace Asantewaa had made illegal contact with her knee into Noxolo Cesane, who went down under the challenge. The hugely experienced playmaker Motlhalo stepped up and calmly slotted low to the right of stationary goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan. The second came not long after that, right-back Lebohang Ramalepe played into space on the flank to slip an angled pass into the path of the perfectly-timed run of Seoposenwe, who stroked a low finish past Konlan. The South Africans had so much of the play they seemed to allow for some complacency at the back against a Black Queens attack that could produce dangerous moments. Near the break Asantewaa's strike from outside the box was palmed past the left upright by Dlamini, then Evelyn Badu was played into acres of space on the right and squared for Doris Boaduwaa, who was denied by the desperate challenge of defender Fikile Magama. Back from the change rooms Ghana continued to ask questions. On the hour Alice Kusi struck a thunderous drive from range into the crossbar, then striker Boaduwaa's effort from the rebound was stopped by Dlamini. In response Seoposenwe cantered down the right and struck inches wide across the face. Ghana opened the South Africans again in he final 10 minutes when Comfort Yeboah's cross found Badu to head onto the bar.

Biyela to skipper strong Junior Bok team against impressive Scotland in World Championship

Even though the SA Under-20 team shows several rotational changes from the team that beat England in their previous group match in Rovigo, the match-23 to face Scotland is a strong combination filled with experience. Fullback Gilermo Mentoe, right wing Cheswill Jooste, outside centre Gino Cupido, and flyhalf Vusi Moyo are retained from the starting fifteen that defeated England on Friday evening. Up front, Matt Romao (loose forward), Jaco Grobbelaar (lock), Jean Erasmus and Oliver Read (both props), and Jaundre Schoeman (hooker) all provided impact off the bench against Australia and England, and are now in the starting pack. According to Kevin Foote, the Junior Springbok coach, they've named a team that will play this important pool game with real purpose and pride against a very good Scotland side.
