Meet Gilbert Enoka: The mental skills coach hired by England for the India Test series

The Hindu3 days ago
Who is Gilbert Enoka and what is his background in sports?
Gilbert Enoka is a renowned mental skills coach from New Zealand, famous for implementing a 'no d***heads policy.' His extensive background includes working with the New Zealand national netball team (1994-97), the New Zealand cricket team (1998-2004), and most notably, the All Blacks (New Zealand's national rugby team) from 2000, where he served as a mental skills coach for 15 years and then as their leadership manager for seven. He also had a stint with Premier League club Chelsea in 2023.
Why has England's cricket team brought in Enoka?
England's cricket team has hired Gilbert Enoka amidst a high-drama series against India and in preparation for the crucial Ashes against Australia. The decision was influenced by the growing number of New Zealanders in the England setup, including head coach Brendon McCullum, with whom Enoka previously worked in New Zealand cricket. His role is to 'toughen up' the squad during this pivotal phase.
What is Enoka's 'no d***heads policy'?
Enoka's 'no d***heads policy' is a philosophy designed to eliminate self-serving and counterproductive behaviours within a team. According to Enoka, a 'd***head' is someone who makes everything about themselves, puts themselves ahead of the team, believes they are entitled to special treatment, operates deceitfully, or seeks unnecessary attention for their work. The policy emphasises that if such individuals cannot change their behaviour, they should be removed from the team, regardless of their talent.
What was Enoka's impact on the All Blacks rugby team?
Gilbert Enoka's tenure with the All Blacks, where he served for 22 years, coincided with a 'golden era' for the team. During this period, the All Blacks achieved significant success, including back-to-back Rugby World Cup triumphs in 2011 and 2015, and maintained a prolonged reign as the world's top-ranked side.
When did Gilbert Enoka join the England cricket setup and for how long?
Gilbert Enoka began working behind the scenes with Brendon McCullum's team since a pre-season camp in London in May, ahead of the Zimbabwe Test. He formally joined the squad during the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against India, addressing players before training at Old Trafford.

Declan Rice defends new teammate Noni Madueke from critics; says he will 'shock a lot of people'

Arsenal's midfield talisman Declan Rice has sprung in support of new signing Noni Madueke from Chelsea. The winger's acquisition for £48.5m had triggered a massive backlash from #NoToMadueke has gained traction on X, and murals outside the club's Emirates Stadium have been vandalised with 'Arteta out'. But Rice is defiantly behind his new teammate, as Arsenal seek to end their prolonged drought for an EPL title, which they last won two decades ago as well as bring their first ever Champions League silverware. 'He's going to shock a lot of people and I can't wait for him to come,' said Rice, who is also his England teammate. He added: 'I know how driven he is. I've spoken to him and you're going to see what he's about this season. He wants to prove and show everyone what he really can do. He's hungry, he wants to play for Arsenal and that's the type of players we want. It's so positive. People have been speaking internally – the players, the staff. We know the player that we're getting and we're really looking forward to having him at our club. It's going to be really exciting.' Pacy and nimble, though wasteful in front of goals during his Chelsea days, he has 20 goals from 92 appearances for the Blues and has already played for England. His trickery to get past the defenders is seen as a big asset. 'When you're an attacking player and in your mind the first thought you have is to go past your defender, that's an unbelievable trait to have,' Rice said about Madueke's ability,' he observed. He is among the finest dribblers in the league too. As much as 33 per cent of his total carries were progressive, bettered only by Manchester City's Jeremy Doku. 'He's going to bring that to the squad along with the other wingers we have. Let's be real – last year we hardly had any depth in any areas. We played half the season pretty much with so many injuries, so to now be able to rotate and push in different competitions with different players is going to be really, really good. That's key for us,' he said. While he is seen as a cover for Bukayo Saka, he brings another dimension and offers Mikel Arteta tactical flexibility. He could be employed as a touchline winger, drifting wide and crossing into the box from the left, like conventional wingers used to. He could also be deployed on both flanks as he is good with both feet. Last season, even when playing largely on the right, 34.2 per cent of his shots came from the right foot, his weaker one.

Manchester Test: Indian bowlers fail to back up Pant's fight with fractured toe

On a day when Rishabh Pant produced a courageous act, batting with a fractured toe to help push India's first-innings total past 350, the Jasprit Bumrah-led bowling unit faltered, handing the momentum back to England as early as Day 2 of the fourth Test in Manchester. Pant, visibly in discomfort, battled through pain to score a defiant half-century, but the Indian bowlers were well below par, allowing the English openers to dominate stumps, England had reached 225 for 2 in just 46 overs, scoring at a brisk rate of 4.89 runs per over. Openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley put on a commanding 166-run stand off just 192 balls, taking the Indian new-ball attack to task in a dominant afternoon vs IND, 4th TEST DAY 2 SCORECARD | HIGHLIGHTS India found some consolation late in the day as Ravindra Jadeja and debutant Anshul Kamboj dismissed the openers, denying them deserved centuries. Nonetheless, England had already reduced the deficit significantly, trailing by only 133 runs by close of play. Ollie Pope (20*) and Joe Root (11*) remained unbeaten, poised to push England further ahead on Day 3 and set up the prospect of batting India out of the Siraj, fielding at cover in the final over of the day, walked up to the stumps and flipped the bails in a bid to reverse India's fortunes. The bail switch, made famous by Stuart Broad, has been tried by Siraj on several occasions, but on Thursday evening, it felt more like an act of desperation. The Indian bowlers had been taken apart by Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, and Siraj's gesture seemed symbolic of a day gone continued his love affair with Manchester, the venue where he dismantled Australia in the 2023 Ashes Test. The ease and aggression with which Crawley and Duckett tore into the Indian attack brought back memories of that Old Trafford encounter. Between them, they struck 26 boundaries and a six, sending the Indian bowlers on a leather hunt and reminding fans of England's scoring blitz during the Ashes, when Australia laboured to 317 at 3.52 runs per over, only to watch England respond with a whirlwind 592 at 5.49 runs per was a crucial knock for Crawley, whose place in the side was under the scanner after a string of low scores in the series. "There is a bit more pace and carry here which suits my game. I feel I don't have to hit it too hard or think so much and that was the case today..I feel I can react and play against the quicker guys, while I took some deep breaths today to keep me relaxed," the England opener said, describing his love affair with Manchester. India will be desperate to avoid a repeat of that script. A vastly improved bowling effort will be needed on Day 3 to claw their way back into the contest. Otherwise, the "moving day" could swiftly move away from them—at a pace quicker than Jofra Archer's will come back tomorrow and try to hit the right areas. We have to be mindful of not giving them boundaries, because they are intent on scoring boundaries. They are not looking for singles and twos," Anshul Kamboj said, speaking to Sony Sports after his second day as a Test cricketer. India will be hoping the pitch, which is getting drier, will assist India's spinners. Jadeja, who got the big wicket of Crawley, will be hoping to lead the Indian fightback on Friday morning. WEATHER GODS CHEATED INDIA? Earlier, England, led by Ben Stokes, bowled with great discipline across the first two sessions on a helpful Old Trafford pitch. Stokes ended his eight-year wait for a five-wicket haul in Test cricket, once again proving to be the spearhead of the English bowling attack, especially in overcast once the sun emerged in the afternoon, the surface began to flatten out and batting became easier. Even so, India's bowling performance was substandard. Their lines and lengths lacked consistency, particularly with the new have been cheated by the weather gods," Sanjay Manjrekar joked when recapping the day's play."Overcast conditions also changed. When India were batting, it was dark and overcast, there was moisture on the pitch as well. The pitch really eased up during England's innings. "It looked so difficult even for Jasprit Bumrah to bowl a wicket-taking delivery. Glad those two wickets came in the end," he said. The decision to hand the new ball to debutant Anshul Kamboj raised eyebrows. The young pacer struggled to settle into a rhythm and was expensive early on, allowing Duckett and Crawley to capitalise and ease the pressure that Bumrah had tried to build from the other Bumrah himself lacked his usual incisiveness, looking the least threatening he has all series. India's attack, in general, appeared to be trying too hard—perhaps in response to the lack of assistance from the pitch—while England's bowlers had earlier shown the value of patience and was Stokes who delivered yet another lion-hearted spell, just a week after leading England to a famous win at Lord's. The England captain bowled 24 overs and picked up five wickets on Day 2, including those of the well-set Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, and debutant Anshul Kamboj, having already dismissed Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill on the opening Thakur stepped up with the bat after being promoted ahead of Washington Sundar on Day 1, justifying the move with a composed innings. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant received a standing ovation from the Manchester crowd as he bravely walked out to bat despite nursing a fractured toe. Pant added 17 runs to his overnight score of 37, but rather than hold back to bat with the tail, he strode out following Shardul's dismissal—demonstrating tremendous commitment and fighting spirit.A knock for the ages! #RishabhPant returned after being retired hurt and showed the world what true grit looks would you rate Rishabh Pant's comeback knock? #ENGvIND 4th TEST, DAY 3 | FRI, 25th JUL, 2:30 PM | Streaming on JioHotstar!Ok Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) July 24, 2025However, Pant was undone by a pearler from Jofra Archer, who has complemented Stokes wonderfully well in the last two Tests. Stokes has now bowled 129 overs in the series—more than any Indian bowler. He thrived in helpful conditions at Old Trafford, breaking partnerships at will while maintaining control throughout his spells. His ability to strike at crucial moments has made him the linchpin of England's bowling India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik lauded Stokes, calling him the standout bowler of the series so far.'He was lion-hearted, for a start. He's bowling long spells, and when the game is on the line, you can't get the ball out of his hands,' Karthik said.'He also has control over what he wants to do with the ball and has easily been the best bowler across both teams in this series.'England will now be hoping their skipper can carry that form into his batting and make India's path to a comeback even more difficult.- EndsYou May Also Like

Hussain Slams Shubman Gill's Captaincy: 'Handed Back Rishabh Pant's Runs'

Nasser Hussain criticized Shubman Gill's captaincy and India's bowling in the Old Trafford Test, questioning the choice of debutant Kamboj over Siraj for the new ball spells. Former England captain Nasser Hussain was critical of Shubman Gill's captaincy and India's bowling in the Old Trafford Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on Thursday (July 24). He said the bowlers were 'very poor' with their lines in England's first innings, while Gill's decision to give the new ball to debutant Anshul Kamboj over Mohammed Siraj was 'odd', with the combination just 'giving back' the hard-earned runs. Batting seemed much more difficult when India were bowled out for 358 in the first innings. Only three batters crossed the 50-run mark, including Pant, who was retired-hurt due to a foot fracture on Wednesday, and came back limping when India were six wickets down to reach a 75-ball 54. In reply, the visitors failed to pick any wickets in the 14 overs they bowled in the second session. England eventually went to stumps at a cozy 225/2. 'Slightly changing conditions, but they bowled very poorly," Hussain told Sky Sports after the second session. 'A change in overhead conditions doesn't make you bowl both sides of the wicket. Too many balls on the pads. Captain's decisions… didn't quite agree with, to be honest. Kamboj wasn't in the squad a week ago, to bring him into the team and give him a new ball ahead of Siraj… seems odd," he added. 'I would've gone for Siraj for a short burst, then switched him to the other end to follow Bumrah. We've all been talking about the green channel on the strip across… this is the end where Stokes bowled and got his fifer, and got uneven bounce and sideways movement. Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong… Rishabh Pant went out there on one leg, and got valuable runs today. They've just handed those runs back to England." Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley put up a 166-run stand which was broken by spinner Ravindra Jadeja in the 32nd over, deep into the final session of the day. Kamboj was brought back for a second spell and took the important wicket of Gill but Joe Root and Ollie Pope survived some more harmless bowling. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
