'We've got to look at all the factors': Jasprit Bumrah's availability still in doubt for must-win Manchester Test, says India's assistant coach

India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has hinted that Jasprit Bumrah is likely to play the crucial fourth Test against England in Manchester, but a final decision will only be taken right before the match, which begins on July 23. With India trailing the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 1-2, the team is under pressure to level the series.
Call on Bumrah to be taken closer to match
Speaking after India's training session in Beckenham on Thursday, Doeschate explained that several factors will influence the decision. He also stated that the team is 'leaning towards' playing Bumrah in Manchester with the series on the line. India must win the fourth Test match to stay alive in the contest.
'We'll make that call in Manchester. We know we've got him for one of the last two tests. I think it's pretty obvious the series is on the line now in Manchester, so there will be a leaning towards playing him,' Doeschate was quoted as saying by PTI.

'But again, we've got to look at all the factors. How many days of cricket are we going to get up there? What do we feel is our best chance of winning that game? And then how that fits in together with the Oval and looking at the last two games holistically as part of the series,' he added.
The Indian team is slated to reach Manchester on July 19. Captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir will then take a final call on Bumrah's inclusion, most likely after consulting the bowler.
Before the start of the India vs England Test series, Bumrah had said that he would only be available for three Tests due to workload management. He cited this as a reason for not taking up the captaincy after Rohit Sharma's retirement.
Rishabh Pant likely to play 4th Test
Meanwhile, Doeschate said that wicketkeeper-batter before the fourth Test. Pant had injured his index finger during the Lord's Test and was forced to sit out for the remainder of India's bowling innings.
'He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third test and it's only going to get easier and easier on his finger. Keeping is obviously the last part of the process to make sure that he can keep,' he said.
'We don't want to go through that again where we have to replace the keeper halfway through the innings. But he rested today. We're just trying to give him the rest as long as possible and hopefully he's good to go in Manchester in the first training session,' Doeschate added.
Pant was replaced by Dhruv Jurel as keeper in both innings after his injury. However, the left-hander still came down to bat and scored a crucial 74 runs in India's first innings before getting run out by Ben Stokes.

Rishabh Pant To Play Manchester Test As Pure Batter? Viral Video Adds Fresh Angle
India vice-captain Rishabh Pant trained without any discomfort, amid reports suggesting that he could play as a pure batter in the fourth Test against England, starting July 23. Pant copped a blow to his finger on Day 1 of the 3rd Test at Lord's earlier this month. Dhruv Jurel replaced him as the wicketkeeper for the majority of the 1st innings, as well as the entirety of the second innings. However, Pant batted in the both innings, scoring a brilliant 74 in the first installment. On Saturday, reports circulating on social media claimed that the Indian team is looking at the possibility of playing as a pure batter. Pant took to social media on Sunday and shared a video of him training ahead of the fourth Test in Manchester's Old Trafford Stadium. In the viral video, Pant batted without any discomfort and was also seen practicing his throws. However, he didn't don the wicketkeeping gloves, which could well mean that he might not keep the wickets in Manchester. If calm had a sound, it would be this #RP17 — Rishabh Pant (@RishabhPant17) July 20, 2025 During England's first innings, Pant made a dive to pick up the ball, but could not get it cleanly in his hands, making England pick two runs off byes. Following that, he was seen in a lot of pain and had to leave the field for medical attention. Speaking on Pant, India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate sounded hopeful, "He (Pant) will bat in Manchester before the Test. Look, I do not think you are going to keep Rishabh out of the Test no matter what. He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third Test, and it is only going to get easier and easier on his finger. And keeping is obviously the last part of the process to make sure that he can keep. We do not want to go through that again where we have to replace the keeper halfway through innings," he added. However, he also dropped a huge hint on Jurel, saying, "He is in the equation, but I mean obviously if Rishabh's fit, he plays the next Test and does both," he noted.

Long wait could be over for Jurel at Old Trafford
Dhruv Jurel isn't quite expressive. He is calm, though not often quiet. He comes with a positive mindset, and is always ready to put in the hard yards. The son of an army man, he focuses on 'process' and 'discipline'. Those two words, he believes, have helped him grow as a cricketer. In a competitive environment, where opportunity doesn't come easy, long waits may often make or break careers, and for Jurel, it has been a long eight-month wait since his last Test outing in Perth last November. But the 24-year-old has taken it in his stride. Ever since landing in England a couple of months ago, Jurel has featured in just two games for India-A, where he scored 227 runs in four innings and claimed seven catches. But in the senior team, Jurel has been under the shadow of Rishabh Pant, the team's vice-captain and the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter. While Pant featured in all three Tests in the series so far, Jurel worked closely with fielding coach T. Dilip and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak over the last several weeks to make sure he remains fit and in the groove. When India had a long session at Beckenham earlier this week, Jurel was among the first few batters to have a long session in the nets. As bowling coach Morne Morkel aimed at Jurel's stumps to test his outside edge, the youngster remained unperturbed and looked confident throughout. And as India gears up for the must-win fourth Test at Old Trafford, India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate indicated that if Pant, who hurt his left index finger during the Lord's Test, isn't ready to keep the wickets, India could look at Jurel. In that case, Pant could be used as a specialist batter. Jurel, being a steady middle-order batter, could also add depth to the batting department. However, if both Jurel and Pant end up playing together, it would be a selection headache for the team management. But sources indicated that Pant will be monitored over the next couple of days before taking a call. 'We don't want to go through that again where we have to replace the keeper halfway through in the innings. We are just trying to give (Pant's finger) as long as possible (to heal), and hopefully he's good to go in Manchester in the first training session,' Doeschate said, adding: 'Jurel is in the equation.' In the previous Test, Jurel came in as Pant's substitute after the latter hurt his finger, and ended up conceding 25 byes in the second innings, as India went down by 22 runs to concede a 1-2 lead in the five-match series. But it's not just Jurel, several wicket-keepers have struggled in England where the ball wobbles a lot once it goes past the batter. Despite earning praise from the cricketing fraternity, it has still been a long wait for Jurel. But now, with the series on the line and the team management not willing to risk Pant, he could just get lucky.
