Gleyber Torres bet on himself and so did Detroit Tigers. Now it's time for an All-Star party

WASHINGTON — When the Detroit Tigers signed Gleyber Torres on a one-year deal to be their second baseman, they knew he'd be the starting All-Star at his position. They could say that, right? How would anyone outside know? Advertisement 'We expected him to be the starting All-Star second baseman for the American League,' Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Thursday, July 3. 'We knew it all the way.' He smiled. And paused, to let the improbability sink in. Then continued: Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres (25) hits the ball into play against the Washington Nationals during the fifth inning of Game 2 of a split doubleheader at Nationals Park in Washington on Wednesday, July 2, 2025. SUMMER OF STARS: Riley Greene and Javier Báez, Detroit Tigers' All-Star Game starters, share critical trait 'But seriously, we did feel like we were getting a good player at a good time and (we'd) be able to get a good performance out of him.' But this? The best second baseman in the American League? The leader at his position in on-base percentage? Second in OPS? Second in batting average and RBIs? A career high in walks so far? Advertisement Nah, of course the Tigers didn't know. Even Torres didn't know. He did know enough to gamble that he'd find his way back to All-Star form, though. That one-year, $15 million contract he signed? He'll add to it significantly next year if the second half of the season plays out like the first half just did. 'The way it played out is obviously special for him and special for us,' Hinch said. 'Because he bet on himself. Came in on a one-year deal to a young team as a veteran presence. We had to move some people around to accommodate that. So, I think both parties worked hard to establish this relationship, where he trusted us and felt like we were going to get something by giving him the opportunity.' Really, really special is the phrase Torres used Thursday to describe his resurgence and the All-Star nod. Really, really happy. It was really special. Advertisement 'Means a lot,' he said Thursday. 'I feel real proud because Detroit fans (are) really showing up. (It's been an) opportunity to play with a special team. I really enjoy having (Javier) Báez and (Riley Greene) go with me. Hopefully more people can come later.' Detroit Tigers left fielder Riley Greene (31) celebrates with second baseman Gleyber Torres (25) and right fielder Wenceel Perez (46) after hitting the second of two three-run home runs against the Washington Nationals during the fourth inning of a split doubleheader at Nationals Park in Washington on July 2, 2025. Torres didn't know much about Detroit when he signed to join the Tigers. He knew a little about the Lions, the 'hockey team,' and the run the Tigers made last fall. But he has loved what he has learned. As for the future? He isn't worried about next season. He's focused on this season. '(We have to) keep doing the right work for the second half because as a team we have to finish strong,' Torres said. Advertisement Hinch agreed. 'His performance has been exceptional,' he said. And yet? 'He still has ways that he can get better and we are going to continue to push him,' Hinch said. Contact Shawn Windsor: swindsor@ Follow him @shawnwindsor. Former Washington NFL stars named July 4 Parade Grand Marshals

Former Washington Redskins Clinton Portis and Ryan Kerrigan will be celebrating July 4 in Middletown, Va. The two former Redskins stars are not only celebrating our nation's independence in Middletown, but they are also being honored, as they have been named grand marshals for the July 4 Middletown parade. A third grand marshal has been named, Lauryn Ricketts, a meteorologist with WRC-TV and WTOP-FM in Washington, D.C. Portis before playing with the Redskins, was a Miami Hurricane prior to being drafted by the Denver Broncos. When Redskins cornerback Champ Bailey threatened to boycott training camp if they used the NFL franchise tag on him, Washington traded Bailey and a second-round draft choice to the Broncos for Portis. Playing in 113 NFL games, Portis rushed for 9,923 yards, averaging 4.4 yards a carry and scoring 75 NFL touchdowns. Following his NFL career, Portis was voted one of the Washington Redskins' greatest 80 players to mark the 80th anniversary of the franchise. Kerrigan played in 172 NFL games, all but one season in Washington, where he accumulated 95.5 quarterback sacks. The former first-round draft choice (16th overall) by the Redskins in the 2011 NFL draft, accumulated 333 solo tackles while also forcing 26 fumbles. Playing 10 seasons in Washington (his one final season in Philadelphia), Kerrigan became the Washington all-time quarterback sacks leader with 95.5. The four-time Pro Bowler led the NFL in 2016 with 18 tackles for a loss. 'We're excited that they're coming and we're looking forward to a wonderful July 4th celebration,' Mayor Charles Harbaugh said. 'We're really throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it.' The mayor was referring to a full slate of activities on tap for Independence Day, starting with a Big Ball softball tournament at 8 a.m. and ending with a fireworks show at 9:15 p.m. Events will be held at various locations in town but most will occur in Middletown Community Park. The centerpiece of Middletown's July 4th celebration is its parade. Organizer Katie Garrett said that as of Thursday morning, 76 entries were set to participate. The parade will step off at 5 p.m. and wind its way along Main Street.
