New group announces plans to restore iconic Dumfries and Galloway landmark
Plans are being made to restore an iconic Castle Douglas landmark.
The Restoring Kelton Subgroup has been launched to give a fresh look to Kelton the Beltie – a three-metre tall willow sculpture of a Belted Galloway bull on market Hill.
The artwork was created by Auchencairn artist Trevor Leat, who also made the statues for The Wickerman Festival with Alex Rigg.
Kelton was originally commissioned for the Royal Highland Showcase and has since become a beloved local landmark and gateway to Galloway, representing both the strength of our agricultural roots and the character of our market food town.
The subgroup is made up of representatives from the town's community council, Castle Douglas Development Forum, Men's Shed, Rotary, Forward Rotary, the common good sub committee and the place plan team.
Local councillor and group member Pauline Drysdale said: 'This is more than just a restoration. Local artists Alex Rigg will work alongside Trevor Leat, to re-create Kelton on Market Hill, so we can all see them at work.
'We are also planning a community activity programme to include school and nursery pupils and a celebration to bring our community together over the summer.
'We are actively fundraising and we will publicly thank all sponsors and donors on a permanent plaque near the sculpture, as well as across social media and printed materials.
'This is a wonderful opportunity to be part of something meaningful and visible, right at the heart of Castle Douglas. If you'd like to support the project or would like more details I'd be delighted to speak to you.'
Pledges have been received from local businesses, charities and societies, with the Belted Galloway Society donating £2,000.
The group aims to raise around £5,000 extra to support a community programme and lights for the structure. Some funding will come through grants, which will be identified and managed by Castle Douglas Development Forum on behalf of the Restoring Kelton Subgroup.
Councillor Drysdale added: 'Many thanks for all pledges so far. Do please contact myself should you like join any of our meetings or should you wish to contribute. We next meet at The Mad Hatter on June 4 at 7pm. All welcome.'
There are plans for community events celebrating the story of the Belted Galloway and its importance to the agricultural economy, as well as a public celebration bringing the community together around Kelton.
Community willow weaving, arts and crafts workshops and willow talks and demonstrations are also in the works.

Rising Tariffs Undercut Caterpillar's Q2 Performance Even As Order Backlog Swells By $2.5 Billion
Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:) reported second-quarter 2025 revenue of $16.569 billion, down 1 percent from $16.689 billion a year earlier, beating the analyst consensus of $16.17 billion. The adjusted earnings per share of $4.72 missed the $4.90 estimate. GAAP earnings per share were $4.62, compared with $5.48 in the prior-year period. GAAP operating profit was $2.860 billion, representing a 17.3% margin, a decrease of $622 million, or 18% YoY, compared with $3.482 billion. This was primarily due to unfavorable manufacturing costs, which the company repeatedly said "largely reflected the impact of higher tariffs.". Adjusted operating profit was $2.916 billion, with a 17.6% margin, down from 22.4% a year operating cash flow was $3.1 billion for the quarter. Machinery, Energy & Transportation (ME&T) free cash flow was $1.5 billion. The company ended the quarter with $5.4 billion in enterprise cash. During the period, Caterpillar repurchased $800 million of common stock and paid $700 million in dividends. Construction Industries posted sales of $6.190 billion, down 7% from $6.683 billion a year ago. Segment profit declined 29% to $1.244 billion, and the segment margin fell to 20.1% from 26.1%. Management attributed the margin pressure to unfavorable price realization and "unfavorable manufacturing costs largely reflected the impact of higher tariffs." Resource Industries reported sales of $3.087 billion, a 4% decrease year-over-year. Segment profit fell 25% to $537 million. The company again cited "unfavorable manufacturing costs largely reflected the impact of higher tariffs" as a key driver of the profit decline. Segment profit rose 4% to $1.585 billion, though the margin declined slightly to 20.2%. Higher manufacturing costs due to tariffs contributed to the margin compression. Financial Products revenue rose 4% to $1.042 billion. Segment profit increased 9% to $248 million, driven by higher average earning assets and gains on equity securities, partially offset by increased provision for credit losses. Geographically, North America sales declined about 2 percent to approximately $8.9 billion, while Latin America revenue fell 4 percent. In contrast, EAME (Europe, Africa, Middle East) posted a 6 percent increase in regional sales, and Asia Pacific posted flat or unchanged revenue versus the prior-year quarter. Caterpillar said the order backlog increased by approximately $2.5 billion during the quarter across all primary segments. Outlook The company expects Q3 2025 incremental tariff costs to range between $400 million and $500 million. For the full year, it estimates net incremental tariff costs of $1.3 billion to $1.5 billion. Caterpillar anticipates full-year sales to be slightly higher than 2024 and expects ME&T free cash flow to be around the middle of its $5 billion to $10 billion targeted range. It reaffirmed that full-year adjusted operating profit margin is expected to be in the top half of the targeted range, excluding tariffs, and in the bottom half, including tariffs. In the conference call, the company stated, "Including the net impact from incremental tariffs, we expect third quarter enterprise adjusted operating profit margin to be lower versus the prior year." 'We are broken': Family of man who died in police cell want to give him 'a beautiful send off'
An appeal has been launched to give a man who died in police custody 'a beautiful send off'. Ellis Rocks, 26, was found unresponsive in his cell on Friday (August 1) and died at the weekend. His mother Paula Wilkie has paid tribute to her 'beautiful boy'. In a Facebook post, she said 'nothing can fix this pain we feel', adding: "We are broken as a family. May my little boy rest in peace." Mr Rocks was arrested after being approached by officers inside the Britannia Hotel on Almond Brook Road in Standish, Wigan, at around 8.35pm last Thursday (July 31). Mr Rocks was taken to a custody cell in Wigan at 9.15pm, where staff later found him unresponsive at 2.30am. He was taken to hospital, where he sadly died on Sunday morning (August 3). The force had to clarify the reason for Mr Rock's arrest after Tommy Robinson and a number of others made claims on social media he was arrested outside a hotel being used to house migrants. An investigation has been launched by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Now Grant Cornish, partner of Ellis' sister Sasha has started a fundraiser to pay for his funeral. He posted: "I'm starting this go fund me for my partner Sasha and her mum Paula and dad Stuart. For the tragic sudden loss of Ellis Alexander Rocks. So many people have asked Paula can they donate, but she said the family was too proud. But after many people saying they want to contribute for a beautiful send off that Ellis deserves, I have been given permission from the family to do this. He deserves an amazing send off. Any donation will be appreciated, Thank you." GMP said its Professional Standards Directorate is cooperating with the IOPC on the investigation. Assistant Chief Constable Chris Sykes said: "Our thoughts are with the family of Ellis who have endured the most heartbreaking last few days. What is most important is that they get all the answers to what has led to his death. We will fully cooperate with the IOPC's enquiries. "Incidents where someone sadly dies following police contact are rare but are nevertheless deeply impactful for that person's loved ones. "It is important following a death in our custody that a thorough and independent investigation takes place, and I urge people to not rush to judgement before the full facts are established." The IOPC said it has reviewed CCTV from the custody suite and body-worn video footage from officers involved in the arrest and has spoken to GMP about receiving initial accounts from officers involved. A spokesperson said: "This was a tragic incident in which Mr Rocks has sadly died and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones. "GMP referred this matter to us, and as he was in the custody of police at the time he became unwell, it is important there is a thorough and independent investigation." Clarifying the circumstances around Mr Rocks' arrest, GMP said: "The arrest did not come in connection with any protest activity. The man was arrested at a location which does not house asylum seekers, and there were no protests in relation to this in Wigan on the day the man was taken into custody."
