Ganja seized at Nagpur airport hydroponic weed?
Zonal DCP Lohit Matani said the samples would be sent to the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) to ascertain its quality. "We would seek reports from the narcotics experts of the forensic laboratory to know if the intercepted ganja was hydroponic weed," he said.
While the cost of the intercepted variety was calculated at Rs20,000 per kg, the worth of the seizure would skyrocket to Rs8-10 crores if it turns out to be hydroponic weed.
Across several airports in India this year, substantial amounts of the hydroponic variety of marijuana were intercepted from foreign nationals. Sources stated the regular quality of marijuana would unlikely be sent through air parcels spending high amounts. "The air routes are generally used when the cost of the consignment is high, or else sending the regular variety through air cargo is impractical financially," said a source.

‘Operation U-Turn' Cuts Road Deaths by 62.5% in Nagpur
1 2 Nagpur: In a major boost to road safety, Nagpur Police's recently launched 'Operation U-Turn' has led to a dramatic 62.5% drop in road accident deaths in July 2025 compared to the same month last year. The operation, aimed primarily at curbing drunk driving and other dangerous road behaviours, was launched on July 10 and has been active for just 21 days. Under the leadership of CP Ravinder Singal and DCP (Traffic) Lohit Matani, more than 2,500 motorists and bikers were pulled up during late evening drives. Police said the targeted enforcement, especially between 6pm and midnight, proved critical in cutting down both fatalities and serious injuries on city roads. According to data compiled by the traffic branch's accident cell, fatal accidents dropped from 40 in July 2024 to 15 this year, while the number of serious injuries reduced from 13 to just 2 — an 84.6% reduction. Senior officials said the most significant factor behind the fall was the crackdown on drunken driving, along with enforcement of helmet rules and action against wrong-side driving. "Checkpoints were set up across the city to monitor violations, especially in high-risk areas and during peak accident hours," said CP Singal. "Heavy fines and legal action were taken against offenders. But Operation U-Turn is not just about enforcement — it's about building a culture of road safety. The encouraging results also reflect citizen cooperation." Jt CP Navinchandra Reddy, who is also overseeing the drive, added that "data-driven policing and focused enforcement" were the keys to success. "Community engagement also played a big role," he said. To complement enforcement, the police also conducted public awareness campaigns, including outreach programmes to educate citizens on the importance of wearing helmets, obeying signals, and not driving under the influence. Launched as a response to the city's growing accident toll, the drive is now being seen as a model for targeted road safety campaigns. Nagpur Police said it plans to sustain the momentum by expanding the operation and introducing AI-based traffic monitoring systems to improve surveillance and compliance. "Dangerous driving behaviours won't be tolerated, and we'll continue to take strict action," said DCP Matani, adding that efforts would continue until road deaths are significantly reduced.

Assistant jail superintendent arrested on bribe charges
Ujjain: Lokayukta police in Ujjain arrested assistant jail superintendent of Khachrod Sub Jail on Friday for accepting a bribe of Rs15,000 in exchange of allowing a meeting with an inmate and preventing assault on him in the prison. Lokayukta SP Anand Yadav said that on Thursday Jitendra Gomen, a resident of Gondia village near Ujjain, filed a complaint against assistant jail superintendent Surendra Singh Ranawat. He reported that his brother-in-law was detained in Khachrod Sub Jail for the past eight days on a court warrant. The assistant jail superintendent demanded a bribe of Rs30,000 to allow a meeting and ensure no assault. Lokayukta DSP Dineshchandra Patel confirmed the complaint and after verification, on Friday, the complainant was sent to Khachrod Sub Jail with the bribe money for a trap. DSP Patel, leading the team, said that the assistant jail superintendent instructed the complainant to place the money in the trunk of a two-wheeler parked on the jail premises instead of taking it directly. The accused was caught as soon as he touched the vehicle. The bribe money was recovered from the vehicle's trunk. The registered notes provided to the complainant by Collector in the presence of two gazetted officers were the same ones recovered from the trunk. When the trunk was cleaned with cotton and washed, the presence of sodium carbonate turned the water red. A case was filed against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He was released on bail bond after serving a notice.

Hotel owner turns pimp, 4 women rescued
Nagpur: Lodge owner Narendra Ninave transformed his Mahalaxmi Krupa Guest House in Kanholibara, on the city's outskirts, into a hub for illegal flesh trade, catering to drivers and labourers from MIDC on the city's outskirts. On Thursday, the crime branch, under 'Operation Shakti', conducted a raid at the lodge following reliable intelligence. Sources said Ninave's prime clientele were transporters, drivers, loaders, and other employees visiting MIDC areas for work. The operation, led by senior inspector Amol Deshmukh under the supervision of DCP Rahul Maknikar and ACP Abhijeet Patil, resulted in the rescue of four women who were victims of the prostitution racket run by Ninave, a 55-year-old resident of Butibori. During the raid, authorities seized two mobile phones, Rs6,000 in cash, and other materials valued at Rs52,170 from the accused. Ninave was found exploiting the victims for financial gain by providing a space for prostitution.
