Vietnam-India trade reaches USD 15 billion, Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Hai eyes further cooperation
Speaking to ANI, Hai stated, 'Currently, we have seen fine development in our trade and investment cooperation.'
He further attributed the success to the strong political cooperation, traditional friendship, and stated, 'One of the advantages of cooperation between our countries is that we have strong political cooperation, traditional friendship, and the comprehensive and strategic partnership between our countries is developing well.'
'With that development, trade and investment have been growing well over the last few years. The potential is huge. We are working with the government agencies of India and in this visit, I had a conversation with Bharat Chamber of Commerce in West Bengal about ways to promote trade, investment, and cooperation even further,' he added.
The envoy expressed optimism about the future of the Vietnam-India partnership, saying, 'We are committed and optimistic about the potential and the future of the Vietnam-India partnership.'
'Right now, we have a trade target of USD 15 billion,' he said.
As Vietnam continues to strengthen its ties with India, the country is also expanding its presence on the global stage. Brazil's Foreign Ministry has announced that Vietnam has officially joined BRICS as a partner country. This addition was announced in June 2025, with Vietnam becoming the tenth partner country.
Earlier, Leaders of the BRICS nations welcomed Indonesia as a member of the group, while 10 nations, including Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Malaysia, Thailand, Cuba, Vietnam, Uganda, and Uzbekistan, as partner countries.
Vietnam becomes the tenth BRICS partner country, alongside Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan. The partner-country category was established at the XVI BRICS Summit, in Kazan, in October 2024, as per the BRICS official statement.
The joint declaration of the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro on Sunday stated, 'We welcome the Indonesia as a BRICS member, as well as the Belarus, the Plurinational State of Bolivia, the Kazakhstan, the Cuba, the Nigeria, Malaysia, Thailand, the Vietnam, the Uganda, and the Uzbekistan as BRICS partner countries.'
PM Modi is also in BRICS Summit, where he met with Brazil president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and thanked him for his warm hospitality and the successful organisation of the Summit.
During the BRICS session 'Peace and Security and Reform of Global Governance' on Sunday, PM Modi stated that the expansion of BRICS and the inclusion of new partners demonstrates its ability to evolve with times and called for reforming institutions like the United Nations Security Council, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and Multilateral Developments.

'The business community values stability and predictability and has continued to make deals and stay active despite recent diplomatic challenges. These are encouraging signals for long-term business planning and I'm cautiously optimistic that relations will continue to improve,' said Mr. Thomas. According to Mr. Thomas, India presents enormous potential for Canadian firms looking to diversify beyond the U.S. market. Canada and the U.S. are locked in a trade war. 'Canadian companies already active in India are seeing real success, on the investment side of things, particularly in infrastructure and real estate. This year, investments from Canada into India — both direct and indirect — hovers around CA $100 billion! There are still many untapped opportunities to explore and with complementary strengths in sectors like agri-food, energy, education, and resources, there's far more we can achieve together,' he said.

The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) raised concerns over the lack of reciprocity in the proposed terms.'A bad deal, especially one that removes India's tariffs without reciprocal benefits, could be worse than no deal at all,' said GTRI founder Ajay Srivastava. He added that India must 'negotiate transparently, guard against one-sided outcomes, and not succumb to pressure for quick, symbolic agreements that compromise long-term economic interests.'India has so far resisted giving tariff concessions in sensitive sectors such as dairy, which it has never opened to any FTA partner. It is also pushing the US to remove or reduce the additional 26% tariffs it has imposed, along with duties on steel (50%) and autos (25%). Washington, in turn, has postponed the imposition of new tariffs on India until August two nations are targeting an interim agreement in the coming months, with the aim to finalise the first tranche of the BTA by September– trade between the two countries has remained robust, with India's merchandise exports to the US rising 21.78% to USD 17.25 billion in April-May this fiscal, while imports increased by 25.8% to USD 8.87 billion.

PM Modi's visit to Bihar: Projects worth Rs 7,000 crore to be unveiled
The projects are related to diverse sectors of Bihar, including railways, national highways and roads, rural development, animal husbandry and dairy farming, and Information Technology read more Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch development projects worth more than Rs 7,000 crore during his visit to Bihar on Friday, a senior party leader said. According to state BJP president Dilip Jaiswal, Modi will address a public meeting at Gandhi Maidan in Motihari town, the headquarters of East Champaran district. 'That Bihar is high on the Prime Minister's agenda can be gauged from the fact that he will be visiting the state for the 53rd time since he assumed power. The state will be showered with development projects worth Rs 7,196 crore,' Jaiswal said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD He added that the projects are related to diverse sectors, including railways, national highways and roads, rural development, animal husbandry and dairy farming, and Information Technology. 'The projects relating to railways are worth Rs 5,398 crore while national highways and roads would account for another Rs 1,173 crore. IT projects, aimed at strengthening digital infrastructure, would involve a cost of Rs 63 crore,' Jaiswal said. The BJP leader also said that at the function, the PM will disburse an amount of Rs 162 crore, through direct cash transfer, to 40,000 beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana while another 12,000 people will be handed over the keys to their new houses. 'In addition, financial assistance of Rs 400 crore will be extended to 61,500 self-help groups during the function. Bihar, which sees Modi as family, awaits the PM eagerly,' Jaiswal added.
